Match Thread: Dale vs Bolton

Totally agree. Quite possibly the worste decision a referee could make. How on earth he saw what he believed he did remains a mystery. On so many levels a shocker given the save required to keep our the kick from the player who conned the ref in the first place. I don't blame Hamilton. Good player, maybe their best, simply used the refs inadequacies to Bolton's benefit. The yellow should be scrubbed and the ref marked down.

Match thread: Walsall, H
at 00:04 26 Aug 2018

One of the best posts this evening, good points well made.
The whole thing is made unnecessarily overcomplicated to our detriment by the tactics we employ which seem to be totally absolute and inflexible, hence their first gift goal today.. We need to show some belief in our abilities and release the players into what they are capable of, they appear to be hidebound by an obsession with the limits placed upon them, scared to death of breaking the tedious mould of unadventurous possession football. Cannon as an example, is a positive force which is denied its opportunity because it perhaps may not quite fit, he should fit. We need to release the potential that we clearly have and enable the players to believe in themselves, they are good enough. Pick the best players in their best positions and give them the freedom to play. .

Take your point but in another sense, it takes some strength to demonstrate the wisdom he did in consulting the linesman, reflecting, and having the courage to recognise his error. All this in the heat of the moment. Strong decision and good for us. Up the Dale. It was surreal I agree, can't imagine a more surreal finish to a game.

Alli is a bloody disgrace!!!
at 16:10 20 Feb 2018

I'm unsure of the decision, was it wasn't it, who knows. The ref gave it so it was. The straw men you come up as regards teachers are beside the point but I respect your view and the way you put it. Where someone supports cheating as the Spurs manager appears to, then at the top of his profession he should be even more ashamed as he has influence. I'm afraid I don't defer to their position. Equally, the pundits who talk about the right to 'go down' if they feel contact, are as bad. Didn't Harry Kane make such a comment? George Best will be turning in his grave! Just because its a trend as another poster has suggested, we shouldn't put up with it and should call it out wherever possible. The funny thing is that the players (and ours aren't innocent I know!) appear to spend 90 minutes trying to cheat the ref, then get on his back when he makes a mistake! As I said, it will run and run no doubt but lets hope the authorities do deal with it as they should. Good discussion, thanks.

Alli is a bloody disgrace!!!

You're entitled to your opinion of course. Cheating has no part to play in sport as far as I'm concerned and Alli deserved to be booked. Any so called victory gained through deception is no victory at all and those who celebrate such, as Pocetino appears to should be ashamed of themselves in my view. What sort of an example it sets to the children, God only knows. The spirit of the game is being eroded by the likes of Alli and other cheats while teachers fight a losing battle to maintain standards of sportsmanship. What is it they say, 'When the final arbiter calls your name he won't ask whether you won or lost, but how you played the game!' Equally, in my opinion, it was far from a clear foul and the photographs/ replays are inconclusive and skewed by Alli's launch. Quoting others who take your view doesn't strengthen the case at all, no matter who they may be, we're all entitled to an opinion. People in a minority of one can be right and no doubt this will run and run.

Whether it was foul or not is a tricky one. Its only a tricky one due to Alli's theatricals which blur the picture. His obvious exaggeration was a clear attempt to deceive the referee. McGahey may or may not have committed an unintentional foul, its hard to see and decide. For me, cheating trumps unintended indiscretion anyway otherwise what sort of a place are we getting into. We may as well bin any idea of sportsmanship and playing the game with any sense of honour, its sport. I would have booked Alli for what was clearly cheating, that at least I could have been certain of. Decency, morals and the whole concept of the spirit of the game are being eroded by behaviours such as Alli's and we need to decide what we want, is this acceptable. Not for me.

Spurs - Sold out
at 21:12 12 Feb 2018

Its a mistake to fall for the 'us and them'. Dale want to attract more local fans and this is an opportunity quite apart from the fact that its perverse to somehow penalise locals who do want to go. If one Dale fan is denied its one too many. More significantly, its the proportions. Where we aren't going to fill the ground then it makes financial sense, where we have the potential to do so with fewer away fans particularly in the cup then it doesn't. It also reduces the impact of the local support. I wonder if the Dale received anything like 30% at any of our away games.

I can't agree with the whole of the Willbutts for Spurs if there are any Dale fans now denied a ticket. The fact that its been done in the past is not relevant, every match is different, this is a unique sell out where home advantage risks being squandered and a good number of Dale fans denied access. Where would any club expect to be allocated 30% of the gate? I can't imagine any premiership club allocating this to any visiting fans. It doesn't happen. I feel for the fans who will now have to watch on telly and have no doubt it will be a great atmosphere but the Willbutts allocation would have benefited from a more nuanced and measured approach in my view.

Overachieving has caught up with us.
at 10:03 27 Jan 2018

Huge respect for what Keith Hill has achieved on behalf of us all. He has brought the best years any of us have experienced and I was there in '69. However, I think you're spot on with what you say. The tactics, the negative 'game management', the team selection, the playing of players in inappropriate positions, the failings in recruitment, the mystery behind players appearing and disappearing and the number of games either drawn or lost from winning positions often late on.......can't help returning to the Fleetwood game as a classic example, there are several others. Its almost as if Keith was in a state of overconfident hubris but this is a dangerous place to be, as we are seeing to our cost. Openness, honesty and graft needed now, no excuses. Come on the Dale.

Completely agree. Since then Rochdale has been playing catch up. The damage was done in the 70s when Rochdale centre was destroyed, and no council since has had the wisdom and guts to see it or attempt to put it right. Wouldn't it be nice to go for a pint in Luffies or the Clock Face, and to wander around the market(both markets!) spoiled for choice for what to buy (great cheese choices!). Things have changed but the council is busy fighting yesterdays wars with what they see as today's solutions. They sounded just as plausible in the 70s, we said it wouldn't work then, they didn't listen. It won't work now but they won't listen, because its all about their own political advancement. If I were M&S I'd be doing exactly the same, who in their right mind would trust a Rochdale council. I would love to think that Rochdale had the potential but we need to be realistic and honest. Pie in the sky using ratepayers money while social services starve isn't the way.

The Darlo revival
at 23:48 13 Apr 2017

So in other words the only possible 'achievement' for Darlo throughout this season has been to avoid relegation! The supporters who have rebuilt the club from rock bottom deserve better. Someone has really f'''''''d up here. The board should be on the ball and aware of any change in regulations while the league should be communicating better. This should not slip through the net, both are culpable. How must the fans feel?

Just ignore that nonsense Danny. I'm sure the fans are with you, we all care more about the Dale than the nuances of the video. Its his issue if he can't see what matters, hope he will wise up.
And thanks again, much appreciated.

50th anniversary next week
at 14:16 20 Dec 2015

I thought your post was amazing D_Alien. Sums up my feelings entirely. I've a couple more years in but not many and look back with pride at the way we stuck at it over the years even when the traffic lights at the end of Sandy Lane were a more appealing spectacle during the dark days. Got a good view of them from where we stood in those days! These are golden times for the Dale and we need to cherish them. I don't often post on here but feel the need to do so in response to your post. It sums up the emotion perfectly, sport is a metaphor for life in many respects and we need to value what we have. Keith Hill is a personality and character. Thank God for the personalities and characters I say. This is part of what makes him what he is, without doubt the best thing that has ever happened to the Dale!! And long may he continue. Up the Dale!

The art of conversation
at 17:06 26 Jul 2015

Absolutely agree. It drives people out of their seats at half time and prevents some from taking their seats as early as they would wish. Its at an unhealthy and damaging level, and needs to be turned down so that normal conversation can take place, its not a disco. Its these conversations that are enjoyable, not having to shout above such a din. Hopefully common sense will eventually prevail.
