The RochdaleAFC.com Podcast - Episode 31
at 12:29 22 Jan 2021

Another good listen - and I definitely agree with Chaff's perspective on the home form. Any other season and I suspect action would have been taken before now. Only Walter Joyce, I reckon, has overseen a worse record. Relying on away form is unsustainable and it very much is, as Chaff says, a psychological issue to be resolved as well as a tactical one.

Excellent point made about us not learning lessons too - Humphrys and Beesley work better closer together, so why was that reverted for the start of the Wigan game? It has been one of my consistent criticisms of BBM.

As always though, a positive about BBM is his recruitment.

I am looking forward to this but absolutely cannot wait for the India Test series - with the squad they've named, plus Archer and Stokes back for us, it should be a fantastic contest.

Night and day. Humphrys is the most approachable guy in the world and a very good interviewee.

Well, I had been chasing an interview with Kwadwo for ages and did the correct thing by going to his agent first and foremost. His agent, like all agents, get back to you in their own time and there was a lot of back and forth.

An interview date was finally agreed (last Friday evening) and I also agreed to a lot of conditions that a journalist wouldn’t usually agree to, such as copy approval and not to ask certain questions. I agreed to this because, at the end of the day, you are talking to a 17-year-old lad and his wellbeing, for me at least, comes before any juicy story.

At the 11th hour, the interview was pulled. This isn’t unusual. Happens a lot. However, after some digging I discovered that his agent had agreed an exclusive interview with the Guardian instead – how that came about I’ll not go into – and he then instructed Kwadwo not to answer the phone to me, which he didn’t. I don't blame Kwadwo one bit for that, by the way.

So, while the Guardian has a much bigger reach than I could ever hope to and was the obvious option in a straight choice between me and them, it was the way I was treated and how the Guardian interview even came to be an option in the first place which rankles. His agent also knows I am a Dale supporter as well as a journalist. That won’t matter to him in terms of his client, but it matters to me. Anyway, lesson learned.

The Guardian article is great, as you would expect, but they clearly have asked some of the questions that were off the table, so hopefully that at least hits home.

I know a bit of Kwadwo’s personal background and, despite my misgivings about the way I was treated, I know his agent does want the best for him – but definitely more from a financial perspective ultimately.

No, I totally get that and, again, while that was the view of Kwadwo's agent at the time, it may well not be now.

This is what Kwadwo's agent told me, which I will post here because I’ll never use it in an article now:

“He just stood out a mile, y’know?” he says. “I could tell he could easily cut it in the professional game. I took him on and started to get him trials at all the big London clubs. He could have easily gone on to sign for any of them, but then Rochdale got in touch. The manager, Brian Barry-Murphy, said to me, ‘If he comes to Rochdale, he won’t be in our under 18s, he will be with me, in the first team’. That was enough for me and Kwadwo. We knew this was the best decision for his development.”

That's not the inference.

Well, how this interview came about gave me a great insight into how his agent operates and I'll leave it there...

Unfortunately, from speaking to agents, the market is currently flooded with clubs trying to offload players.

I haven’t heard of any firm bids but, having dealt with his agent, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s being touted about.

I agree that we need players in and fast. I hear that work on that front is under way, but the usual constraints apply - we need to move people on too!

Last night to me felt like BBM was aware of the limitations in terms of personnel and as such we sacrificed some of our recent attacking impetus to keep it tight.

Once we went a goal down it was always going to be a struggle given how organised Doncaster were.

When you lose away, no matter to who, the pressure is on to make up the differential at home. It’s time to start doing that. I’m personally losing patience with those on Twitter having a pop about “supporting BBM” or having “unrealistic expectations”. I support the club first and foremost - above any individual - and survival in League One is paramount this season more than any other due to lost revenues.

BBM was backed by the board in the summer and he needs to be now. Replacing him, even if that is being considered, is futile as there isn’t enough time left in the window for an upheaval. BBM therefore needs to be supported in his primary objective of keeping us in this division. If he fails in that, I would rather it be down to him alone than the fact he wasn’t given the resources he needed to do it. I’m sure he would feel that way too.

His contract is up this summer. Barnsley and Sunderland have enquired about taking him this month.

Is this the account that used to steal my news and pass it off as their own? I think it is 🤣

Absolutely agree with you here (although I do worry some of the so-called poorer nations may end up left behind).

I went to bed just as Mark Waugh was dismissing an India victory as "fantasy".

How I chuckled when I saw the result this morning. Absolutely tremendous knocks from Pujara, Gill and Pant on that deck.

Haha. It was probably tastier than those sold by the new caterer.

And absolutely with regards to the bravery of the header. My post was, of course, more a gentle ribbing of the Quest show’s error with his name.

You’ll see a post of mine on this very thread saying that I respect all opinions that have considered both sides of an argument. However, I won’t respect the opinion of someone who hasn’t even seen a game on which to form his opinion, especially when he’s being slightly disparaging of mine.

Anyway. Enough of that. It was a great and brave equalising goal by Jeff Bezos yesterday, eh?

He’s one of them, yes. They amass followers because they purport to have a lowdown on every club in the lower leagues.

They don’t.

People buy into it though.

They claim to be tapped into a fan base but usually have the ear of two or three, some of them happy clappers. It’s not a reliable cross section.

The worst though, are those ‘transfer accounts’ who actually just make stuff up. Again, people get sucked in by it and these accounts also have worryingly high followings.

Sadly shows such as the one on Quest, as good as they can be, are partly fed by so-called social media bloggers and ‘experts’ who actually haven’t witnessed any of our games first hand.

I had an interesting chat with one such who challenged my point of view as harsh. Fair enough, I thought, but then it transpired he actually hadn’t seen a single Dale game this season. At that point, I switched off from anything he had to say.

Sadly, some people do listen to these people and their point of view becomes accepted logic or, worse, fact.
