It’s the Southampton way unfortunately, never paying for the final piece of the jigsaw and it’s why we have only won a single major trophy since 1885.
And before people start giving me stick, I’m not a Skate and my first Saints game was during the 1959/60 season. |

When I see the amount of money that exits the country to the foreign owners of our utilities I am not so sure that you are correct in your views that to the average Joe privatisation has been the success you suggest.
As ever though you are entitled to your opinion just like the rest of us, and at the end of the day we will on this occasion simply have to agree to disagree I suppose. At least we agreed on some aspects which is something. |

I’d like to know the ratio of good signings to duffers.
I imagine it’s about 1in 6, but frankly there have been so many duffers since Sports Republic took over I just can’t be bothered to research it. |

Some excellent points.
In addition, I’m of the opinion that our current situation has been exacerbated by Thatcher selling off vast numbers of council built propertied at knock down prices for electoral advantage,under her Right to Buy scheme. Resulting now in many of those houses being owned by private landlords.
Selling of essential services to the private sector hasn’t helped either, witness the current situation at Thames Water.
Personally I’m pleased to have been a baby boomer like yourself and certainly wouldn’t want to be starting out now. |

Government Debt :-
We currently have the second lowest Debt to Gross Domestic Product Ratio of the G7 advanced economies at just less than 100%. Current highest Japan at just over 200%, lowest Germany at just over 80%.
At the end of the Second World War our figure was just over 250% yet we managed to build the N H S and millions of houses for public occupancy. We also owned and had control over our basic needs such as Water, Energy, Railways and Telephones.
Makes you wonder what went wrong in the meantime doesn’t it ? [Post edited 18 Oct 9:44]

As for Frank Worthington :-
What a showman he was and no mean player either.
It still rankles with me that Adrian Heath scored a header against us in the dying minutes of the F A cup Semi Final at Highbury all those years ago. I’m confident we would have beaten Everton in a replay and Frank would then have been able to show his skills at Wembley in the Final. |

It’s not before time in my opinion that someone queried Mr Blackmore’s approach. In my view he has in the past had an over inflated view as to what his job as a B B C journalist employee entails.
To me, he gives the impression that he thinks he is a member of the Saints management team. In particular when he comments on Solent during and after match days about team selection and tactics.
He needs to understand that although he hosts the pre season Fans Forum, after that Tonda and other senior management don’t answer to him.
As for people giving him abuse on social media that’s totally out of order. By all means state strongly held views on an open medium such as The Ugly, but it should never ever become personal. |

Brought back some marvellous memories, thanks Pat.
This game was the replay following a 2-2 draw at Bolton’s old ground ( Deepdale ? ) if memory serves. I was there, I recall on the previous Sunday, when Richard Hall playing at centre half scored two headers to put us 2-0 up at half time. In the end we were lucky to come away with a draw.
At the time Richard Hall was a very fine young prospect. [Post edited 16 Oct 8:54]

Inclined to agree with you.
It may “ only” be a four point deduction which was imposed but it’s a tremendous handicap which is reflected in the bookies odds and has been since the season started
We may overcome it and finish top two but the bast—ds at the E F L certainly knew what they were doing when they applied it.
Excluded from the Playoff final is one thing, who knows we could have lost to Hull over one game, but the points deduction stays with us for a whole season.

Two rows of four and one player left up front as Tonda did yesterday.
Pity you didn’t even understand the basics which due to your incompetents has left us with the record of two 9-0 defeats.
The biggest ever top level home defeat in the history of English football and the joint biggest ever away defeat to go with it.

I don’t attend away games nowadays due to health issues Nick, whereas I imagine you follow the Saints home and away and thus don’t need to listen to Blackmore on Solent ?
That’s probably why our opinions are so divergent. |

I’ve never liked Blackmore.
To me he has high jacked his position as Solent’s Saints radio reporter to the point where his commentary is more about him than the actual football being played. It’s much the same when he compares the annual Fans Forum.
Personally, I would like to see him gone and replaced by Tessum who having played the game at the top level knows what he is talking about and isn’t afraid to criticise us when necessary. |
