Col U Matches PL 2023-24 - Match 46 V Crewe Alexandra (H)
at 18:44 24 May 2024

Congratulations to all, and particularly Gerry for a late push for the title. However, special mention to RS for not only running the competition, but dominating the league to claim the inaugural title of his own competition. Also, champion of the U'sual PL (yours truly an honourable but distant second place), second place in the Happy Premier League PL, U'sual Champions League qualifier and Charity Shield semi-finalist. Not a bad haul by any measure chap.

Jay Mingi sold to Stockport County for an undisclosed fee. To be ratified as soon as the transfer window opens.

You're not wrong, but to be fair we should have beaten every one of the top seven at least once last season. That's the challenge for the Cowleys, to turn around that mindset and make draws into victories and defeats into draws.

I 100% agree with the sentiments, and totally get the point about level RS - clearly with the benefit of hindsight the U's Ladies were placed at a level way below their ability, but I actually have no problem with that.

They were an untested team, no one knew how they'd compare against any of the other Essex County Women's league sides, and even if anyone did, it would still feel wrong to parachute them in at a higher level and deny other long-standing teams their opportunity for promotion.

If they can keep the core of the team together I'd expect them to waltz through League 1 next season, but to do it from the very grass roots upwards just feels right to me.

It can't be overstated either - Southminster are champions of League 1, and about to be promoted to the Premier League. Phenomenal result to cap a phenomenal season.

Incidentally, Swindon supporters voted him player of the season for 2023/24, despite MK Dons recalling his loan in January. Huge vote of confidence in Kemp, but a massive slap in the chops for the rest of their squad who were there all season.

Needless to say, Swindon supporters want him back, but they don't seem to hold out much hope of signing him. Their rumour is that Bradford are after Kemp, but then again the Bantams were after the Cowleys too, and that didn't exactly work out for them. Would be a great signing if we can afford him.

Do you mean Szmods? Definitely congratulations if you do, and not before time either - but you do know he'll be playing for Ireland?

Macca Bonne - that’ll get the blood pressure rising here! I like the sound of George Lapslie, but this BBC report says that he’s for sale, not released, which probably puts him beyond our reach. I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes to League 1.

I didn’t know anything about Broxbourne Ladies, so I had to look them up. They’ve been going a long time, and quite a successful side too. Given they had to ask for permission to change their name to Tottenham Hotspur Ladies back in 1991, it sounds like they wanted to - or am I missing something?

Each to their own I guess, but I’m happy that there’s room enough for 3pm on Saturdays and 2pm on Sundays. Many (most?) of the 92 seem to agree, and personally I think it’s great that after so long we now have another ladies side at the U’s. I’m not sure I get the MK Dons comparison though? As far as I’m aware the return of CUFC Ladies hasn’t put another ladies side out of existence - which is literally what happened to non-league side MK City in 2003 when the franchise arrived in town.

Champions of Essex County League 2 in their inaugural season, and still to play Southminster United in the League Cup final for an equally impressive double. To say they dominated the league is an understatement - won all 18 games (the other two were awarded as wins because their opponents couldn’t field teams), conceded just nine goals and scored a whopping 129!

It’s a shame the season is over, would have been nice for them to have paraded the trophy at a full JobServe. Maybe first game next season instead?

Well done CUFC Ladies!

Got to be Crawley all the way this evening. As for the final, keeping Crawley in League 2 will obviously be better for the travelling support, but from this side of the country there's not a lot in it to be honest. Our record (and performances) at Crewe haven't been particularly glittering in recent years though.

There is of course the ‘mutual consent’ option to terminate a contract in lieu of a signing fee if the ‘surplus to requirements’ receive offers from elsewhere. No big surprises for me really, and I can imagine the talk with big John would have been a particularly tough one for the Cowleys. If Noah hasn’t immediately accepted an offer, that presumably means there’s only a year on the table. Will he stay at his home club for the start of the Cowley revolution or take two years (which I’m sure he’ll get) elsewhere in League 2? Personally I hope he stays, along with the rest under offer.

More significantly, I’ve just learned that Stockport have released Paddy Madden on a free transfer! I wouldn’t say no.

Much as that may be true for League 2 next season, the franchise deserve nothing but abject failure and the sooner they cease to exist the better. We don't even have to weep for the loss of the league side, because they're not a league side - they're an abomination who stole a league place purely for commercial gain and destroyed a proper football league club in the process.

I don't wish this, but Pete Winkleman will eventually die, we all do. I just hope MK Frankenstein dies with him.

They are indeed the distances from Colchester, so double up for the return trip - unless of course you plan to stay there?

So far we've gained 1,197 driving miles for the six teams joining League 2, comprising:
Carlisle (315)
Fleetwood (280)
Port Vale (199)
Chesterfield (177)
Cheltenham (161) and
Bromley (65)

With the League 2 play-off winners yet to be decided, so far we've lost 882 driving miles for the five teams that have left League 2, comprising:
Stockport (-235)
Wrexham (-229)
Forest Green (-170)
Mansfield (-161), and
Sutton (-87)

That's a net gain of 315 miles. Of the League 2 play-off contenders, the furthest in driving miles is Crewe, a distance of 207 miles, which would mean a modest gain of 108 miles - assuming of course your starting point is Colchester.
