Gateshead 0 v 2 Rochdale

Saturday, 17th January 2026 Kick-off 15:00
Southampton V Hull City The Verdict
Monday, 19th Jan 2026 11:28

Just when we thought the season could not get any worse, this week saw that it could ! both in terms of the transfer market and also this sorry defeat at St Mary's, it is hard to see how it can get better.

I have to say I cannot remember the last time I left St Mary's stadium feeling so utterly despondent about what is going on at this football club, it was probably in the dark days of 2008/09 season as we headed towards relegation to League One and administration.

But what upset me the most was that we are doing the same things I have been banging on about week in week out and getting the same results.

Like most I felt that Tonda Eckert was a breath of fresh air when he took over from Will Still, but when things got tough, he didn't seem to know what to do next.

But if you put in a young experienced manager, then you need to surround him with experienced coaches, you need to bring in a leader on the pitch to assert his authority, but we haven't done that.

In fact if I am blunt, since we sacked Ralph Hasenhuttl, we have not brought in 7 different managers, Nathan Jones & Russell Martin had some experience in England, but not one of the other 6 did, in fact only Ivan Juric could be said to have a lot of experience as a manager.

The club need to wake up to the fact that if you get someone in to do a job, you need it to be someone who has actually done it before.

I still thought that there wasn't much wrong with our squad that couldn't be put right by an injection this month of experience and a player or two in key areas.

Eckert has changed things in every other position in the side bar the back three and it is clear to everyone, especially opposition manager, that week in week out we play three central defenders that have the same attributes and do not compliment each other, more to the point they have the same weak spots, they are slow, ponderous, cannot pass under pressure and not one of them has organisational or leadership qualities.

So what was our answer to this so far in the transfer window, firstly it was to replace an experienced proven Championship keeper with one that has barely played in the last year and that showed on Saturday.

Also we shipped out Ronnie Edwards, perhaps the only central defender with a bit of pace and passing ability and now it seems that we will be loaning out Ryan Fraser to an Australian club.

I have no problem with the club doing this, but they have done so without replacing them with someone better.

So going into this game there wasn't many Saints supporters that had much confidence in Tonda Eckert, but when we saw the team sheet, no one could see much that would change things.

In fairness in the 7 positions in front of the back 3, you couldn't argue much about the selections, but you knew that there would be the same issues of supply.

I could say here that I told you so, I say the same things each week and the same things happen again and again and this was no different.

The goalkeeper is an accident waiting to happen, he made a good early save which augurs well, but the truth is he has barely played in 2 1/2 years, his timing isn't there and thus his confidence cannot be high.

The first goal couldn't be attributed to Peretz though, an awful back pass from Ryan Manning sold both him and his defenders short and that set the tone.

The second goal though was down to the keeper, he half came for the cross from the corner, he did the same for one of Doncaster's goal last weekend, and was left floundering as someone headed home at the far post.

You cannot just throw in a keeper who has barely played a game and expect his timing and confidence to be high, is he an improvement on Gavin Bazunu ? I would say that very few would make that claim.

In front of him, it was the same back three line up that lacks pace and passing ability and doesn't have any organisational skills, yes I have said this before.

Nathan Wood barely won a header, Taylor Harwood-Bellis struggles to move the ball forward and why shouldn't he, he is a decent central defender when played in the middle not a wing back.

Tonda Eckert made a subtle change at half time bringing on Elia Jelert and it changed the pattern of the game, Hull would not have a shot on target in the second half, their 3 on target attempts were all in the first 34 minutes, being the Peretz save and the two goals.

We dominated the game in the second half, but rarely looked like scoring, Ross Stewart brought hope when he stabbed home Leo Scienza's curling cross, but there would be no rousing finale, Hull had their lead and were determined to hold it.

So where do we go from here ?

As mentioned since Ralph Hasenhuttl was dismissed in November 2022, a little over 3 years ago, including the interim managers Ruben Selles & Simon Rusk, Tonda Eckert is the 7th man to have a go at the job.

The biggest crime that Sport Republic have made is to keep on making the same mistakes time after time, both in appointing managers and bringing in players.

Those that say it has been 4 years of abject failure are wrong, we have had one season of success, two years ago under Russell Martin and it could be said that this was the one season where we signed experience and proven players, rather than unproven youngsters.

The likes of Flynn Downes, Ryan Fraser alongside Che Adams & Kyle Walker-Peters.

We need someone to come in now and give us that organisation and leadership, we do not need a keeper that has little experience and hasn't played for 2 1/2 years, we need someone who is proven at the level we need.

Our current recruitment process hasn't been the disaster that some would claim, but it is letting us down at the moment, it isn't delivering what is needed at this moment in time.

It has binned off 3 experienced players in Bazunu, Fraser & Edwards who offer more than those that played on Saturday, would our side have been weakened if we had Bazunu instead of Peretz, Fraser as left wing back instead of Manning and Ronnie Edwards slotting in on the left with THB replacing Wood in the centre.

I don't think it would have, I think it would have addressed the flaws that we had on Saturday, I have no problem with any of the leaving, but only if they are replaced by someone better

Tonda Eckert may well be a manager who is one for the future, but he isn't addressing the issues that we have in this squad NOW.

He isn't getting the best out of the squad and he is seeing the same old players make the same mistakes.

I want to see Tonda Eckert succeed, surely we cannot make it 8 managers in a little over 3 years, but he needs help, he needs a coaching staff that will help him, he needs a Director Of Football that will sign the right players.

Will Johannes Spors pull something out of the bag in the next fortnight and even if he does will it be too little too late.

I said before this game that anything less than 7 points would be disappointing from the 3 games this week, that is already impossible, we cannot afford for it to get worse.

This defeat made it 4 defeats and just 3 draws out of the last 7 games, that is not acceptable, something has to change and fast, it is hard to see that happening this week, but I can see 2 more defeats this week more likely than 2 wins and if our current run makes it just 3 points out of the last 27, then there is a major problem.

An interesting article, some of which, many will be in agreement with. It does start with mistakes made once, twice, three times a week. Manning cost at least a goal a game. He is at best a poor defender and not that great going forward. So as a wing back NO. Wood poor quality defending also leaves the rear vulnerable. Up front we have to have some sort of target player to hold up play for the midfield to join. Currently our possession in our final third results in giving the ball away on the halfway line. Mr Eckert does not seem to see the midfield running back and forth, chasing shadows. His five man back line is wrong, wrong, wrong. His front line the same. Mr Spors needs to tell him what 30,000 people are saying.....before its too late.

Good article. While Ryan Manning was at fault for the appalling back pass the goalkeeper should have fallen on to the ball. For the second goal Wood should have jumped, it was an uncontested header; Wood and others seem to be unable to read the flight of a ball and is unable to time his jump: it’s unlikely that Bazunu would have conceded either goal.
Meanwhile Dom Ballard is scoring for fun for Leyton Orient.

There is something inherently wrong in our club.I read about many conspiracy theories some of which seem plausible but none of which are provbable. I have wondered almost since SR took over why so many back room staff turn out to be short term appointments Is it all about money?
I believe that we have a reasonable, but bloated squad. We should reduce it in this window but not by shipping out experienced players OK Baz isn't the best keeper in the world but he has been there and done it Likewise Fraser
We are surely now at the point where the players personal pride should kick in.Just go out there and play to the best of your ability

I started writing a diatribe about all that was wrong with the Saints and Saturday’s game. But then I thought, why bother?! With a couple of notable exceptions - Leo and Fellowes - it’s the same damned things, which can be summed in three words:
LAZINESS
INEPTITUDE
ARROGANCE

But the biggest crime of all is that going to watch the Saints is NO LONGER ANY FUN…

So now, with the crowd lost, the players’ confidence shot, and further awful performances in prospect, Dragan Solak and SR are even more in the poo, and, without a drastic change of plan, they are destined to remain in charge of a failing club.

SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE HAS TO SERIOUSLY KICK ARSE AND BENCH/SHIP OUT ALL THE DROSS; I don’t see TE capable of doing it, but, if it doesn’t happen, sure as eggs is eggs, we are doomed to mediocrity, probable further humiliation, a rapidly declining fan base and, horror of horrors, relegation.

You can write as many post match reports as you like Nick and I don’t envy you in having to do so.

To me however our current troubles are down to the Owners and their Employees ( both Sports Republic and the Players ) who simply don’t want success.

The Owners through Sports Republic’s Mr Parsons who I believe admitted that they couldn’t compete if returned to The Premiership and the Players who know that they aren’t good enough to play in the top flight.

All of the above mentioned appear quite happy to muddle along managing and playing mid table “ easy street “ football in The Championship. As long as we avoid relegation it’s well done lads and doubles all round as far as they are all concerned.

I believe that the days of following The Saints because whilst they never won much at least they “gave it ago” are over for the foreseeable future.

As for Saturday’s game, I simply cannot be bothered to comment as everything wrong with the Club was there for all to see.

I cant believe Tonger keeps picking Manning ive lost count of the goals hes given away.
Serious change is needed and soon.I Still cannot believe we sold Dom Ballard his ten years at the club he was a goalscorer at all levels but we never gave him a chance. His next move will be for serious cash.Likewise Ronnie Edwards not tried properly and sold for a quick profit,
but who could you buy to replace him fot 4.5 m.Whoever the defence coach is should be
sacked we never look like keeping a clean sheet.

Well said Nick you said it like it is. Today was one of the worst games this season. We have a defence who don't know how to defend. We also have a team that are not fit enough to play for ninety minutes at speed so play in slow motion! We need new central defenders that can make headed clearances and organise the defence. I am dreading this team playing Pompey next Sunday. I see Bazunu kept a clean sheet on Saturday for Stoke. They must have a better defence!!!

As this is supposed to be about the Hull disaster, I can only think that we should be glad they " only had 12 fit players " because goodness knows what the score might have been had they been full strength and with one foot in the play-offs. (Those above in this thread) have made their views very clear and I wouldn't disagree with the main topics.

Some individuals in our squad have talent "of some sort" , but many are being played out of position, namely those roles they had in their previous club(s) which caused us to buy them, and we have blatantly failed to replace many who have left.
It's no case to say that we never replaced Pelle, Mane or Fonte as that was too long ago forgotten by many. Neither have we found a " new " Ings, or van Dijk. More recently we are missing " a new " Walker-Peters and (sadly) Flynn Downes isn't a patch on Prowsey -even on a good day. Paul Onuachu (stated in interview) that his current 11 goal tally in Turkey was due to the fact they play "another formation" that suited him better).
When he was here, we had no real wingers, now that we have bought TWO, our only striker of note - is Adam Armstrong.
My last point reverts to a comment echoed by Block 47M (above)...in that having SOLD Dom Ballard, he is suddenly leading scorer in his league, despite the fact that his club are struggling to keep out of the L1 drop Zone . Why was he sold (and not simply loaned?)
The obvious answer is, in the constant changing of managers, "assistant everybody's" and coaches in the Academy leadership, there was no-one in the hierarchy who knew about a one-time 15 y.o. who later became top scorer in both levels of our Academy, and because of his last injury spell had merely become just... "another name in the treatment room".
IF anyone has pride to lose, bite the bullet and for goodness sake, pay Orient a decent fee to get him back before he moves onto greater glory with another club who can recognise his talent.

Pitiful from a bunch of players (with a few exception)who are dishonouring the Southampton shirt week in week out.
The So called Manager is now proving he is out of his depth and his support team would be quite at home in League 2 or playing Eastleigh and Aldershot as the local derbys.
After supporting my only team for 72 years enough is enough Sports Republic thanks for absolutely nothing. Sporting Director and Manager along with the Russell Martin (you know who you are) Tippy Tappy brigade please leave goodbyes are not necessary.

Really don't understand why we started with 5 at the back at home against a Hull side who were suffering a major injury crisis.

Ralph tried 3 CB's and gave up. You are just keeping a weaker player on the pitch at the expense of a better one.

At this point radical surgery is needed and I would play the U21's in any position if the senior team player regularly underperforms - THB, Manning, Downes should be dropped ASAP. Jander and Azaz have gone off the boil and Fellows needs to start further up the pitch.

Why we still cannot pass the ball ahead of players in transition, rather than behind them so they have to stop and turn towards our goal, just escapes me.

In my mind, it is simple and something that we have been lacking for a while
World-class goalkeeper and centre back both with experience, age doesn't matter.

All of our woes are due to lack of confidence, not just the players but throughout the club.

Anything built on a rock solid foundation will thrive and last.

So very strange what has happened to our club. We have seen what potential can be reached when the right people, resources and planning is put in place most clearly under Markus Liebherr. Everything seemed joined up.

Under the current lot players are signed without thought for how they will fit into the squad/team but purely on how much money they can generate for the owners a few years down the road. The usual outcome of this is that we have a bloated squad of players that are no good for us and we cannot sell.

The multi club ownership model is flawed as dilutes resources and distracts the owners. It is also ripe for financial skulduggery. With the number of players, managers, backroom staff coming and going under the current owners can we be certain that what happens on the pitch is a priority for the owners. Or are the UKs light touch financial regulations the bigger attraction?

The latest transfer activity is very odd indeed. The obvious issue (well the biggest) is a lack of CB who can defend the 6 yard box. Swapping out a keeper of similar ability is a nonsense and then loaning out the previous incumbent is lunacy. Bazunas clean sheet at Stoke is I'm assuming that he has a steady defence in front of him.

The bottom line is SR need to sell as they cannot and do not have the will or ability/skills to enable this club to reach it's potential. The question of course is can we trust them to sell to credible buyers? I don't trust them as all.

I was very surprised you had Manning in your starting line up Nick, Wellington is far better for me, and yet again he proved what a liability he is. Only the U21s won this weekend including the women who would be challenging for promotion if we had not released Molly Pike.

Sports Republic under Solak appear to be systematically dismantling our club. For the men selling Edwards, Ballard (and earlier Alcaraz and several others) whilst keeping the likes of Manning, Stephens etc. is either utterly stupidity or outright sabotage. Ross Stewart's brief cameos when fit show what could have been achieved if we had bought someone to compete for crosses but Spors appears to be completely incompetent or putting us bottom of buying priorities in the group.

I prey that Stewart stays fit to give us a chance of competing for the rest of the season up front as there is no chance that the at best incompetents running our club will buy sensibly. The really sad thing is that the good buys that have been made Scienza, Fellows (if he ever learns to shoot on target) and Azaz (if he can be bothered) will all doubtless be sold of cheaply so they can show a profit.

If zi were running the club I would move Tonda back to U21 coach, where he was doing a good job, and bring in some not wedded to the three centre backs formation.

Seriously I think the club was better run under Katerina, and what her father would make of this disgraceful shambles is anyone's guess. Get your act together Sports Republic or get out of our club.

So it has been awhile since I have commented mainly because I do not get the watch the whole games, only the highlights. I will start with our horrible transfer window. How do you let Bazunu and Ronnie leave? I took some time to review all the goals we have conceded before letting Bazunu leave and came up with some interesting numbers. I was a keeper for 25+ years and I will say that Bazunu was responsible for 4 - read that again 4. All the others were either cracking goals no keeper will save or our lame defenders allowed/were responsible. So when we were going for a new keeper, I was like, ok, get rid of McCarthy finally and have some competition. BUT no, we go and loan out Bazunu. This tells me this is only about money, and SR are trimming the books as they have given up on this season. Next was Ronnie - how do you let CB who has proven championship experience leave??? I watched the Doncaster game and CB Quarshie is a waste of space on the field. His errors and passing were atrocious. How does he start over Ronnie? Again this reeks of of SR looking for quick cash.

So now we have a goalie and CB problem that we cant fix and our manager will not adjust and play a 4-4-2 since he only loves his wingbacks that do not seem to want to defend when needed but want to maraud up the sides when they feel like it.

Finally - how it takes Ross Stewart to score our only goal after all the goal line chances we had, just summons up our players inability to find the back of the net - None of them have that natural killer instinct expect Ross.

We will end up between 10-12 place and wonder what happened again.

BigbadBarry8myboat added 16:47 - Jan 19
Nick,
I completely and utterly disagree with you about Bazunu. You say his replacement is an accident waiting to happen but so was Bazunu. At least in the Hull game I saw what I've never seen from Bazunu, a save from a ball going across the keeper. Bazunu couldn't do the basics.

In addition, it is plain to see where the issue is. We rely on the likes of Stephens and AA, to be the leader on the pitch. While the latter works hard neither is a leader. Making Stephens club captain is frankly a joke, but it was the cheap option.

Is it also any surprise that playing 7 in our own half then leads to few chances and when we do make chances a lack of people to take them ? Tonda and Stills tactic of playing 5 at the back with two holding midfielders leaves us to most teams open to being crowded out, but also sends a message to the defenders that part of their job can be done by others as there are 2 in front. When you then take into account one of them (Downes) can't muster a forward pass (probably becuase of the distance between the backline and forwards) then we have a real issue.

I'd love us to play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2, but we don't have the personnel to do it. To play those systems you need a quick and skillful CB and a strong commanding CB, both of which we frankly lack. Then if we played this system you could put someone like Scienza or or Bragg as the player in the hole like a scholes type position (if playing 4-3-3) but you'd also get the best out of Fellows playing him as a winger not a full back.

My last issue is upfront. IF you're playing a 3 there is no place for Azaz unless its in that scholes position. playing 4-3-3. Also you need to take the burden off Armstrong, so you need a target man, and a poacher, neither of which we have.

Frankly the investment in the team has been appalling for years, since Lambert left, we've been missing a striker. We've got no communication at the back, the last player we had who communicated was Jan Bednarek, but again he was not a leader.

I would rather we tried to win, played 4-3-3 and gave it a go and lost 3-1 than keep playing 5-2-3 and watching 7 defenders in the box being unable to win a header.

Frankly, I don't think there was any need to give Tonda the job, he should have been on a week to week deal until his true ability in this league had been established. He's obviously not up to life in the Championship. I've never seen so much evidence of players moving in blocks, so close together that they were constantly in each other's way and leaving wide areas of the pitch unmarshalled. I subscribe to the belief that once Tonda got his feet under the table he introduced his playing philosophy which has only served to confuse what free-spirited skilful players we have. Subbing Fellows when he was plainly the only player causing Hull problems was amateurish and as for mistake a week Manning, I can truly say that you wouldn't see such an error at my local park on a Sunday morning. We look like a side heading only one way and it's not up.

I can't imagine there's many good players looking to come into this shit show. Personally, I would focus on shipping out those bench warmers , and any at all that are kicking off in the dressing room. This season is gone anyway- if we can avoid relegation .
Start next year with a smaller squad of players that want to be here and fight.

I agree with much of what has been said above, but still fail to see why FD is among a couple of others, singled out for criticism - one contribution above refer to him not being another Prowsey - that's true. FD puts in more challenges and tackles in 1 game than JWP did in a season. JWP was the easiest CM to play against in the whole PL, yet it seem so few Saints fans could see that. Yes, he was committed, had integrity and a model professional, but couldn't tackle yet played CM because he had insufficient pace to play wide. Re FD, his work rate and effort alone should be recognised. Does he pas square or back? Yes, as there's so little going on in front of him. JWP made a lucrative career passing square and backwards....
