Rochdale 2 v 0 Truro City

Saturday, 24th January 2026 Kick-off 15:00
Southampton At Portsmouth The Verdict
Monday, 26th Jan 2026 09:59

It was always going to be a tense match and as a spectacle it wasn't great, Saints did their usual thing, had the best chances and then gave a goal away in a lapse of concentration, but the main thing for supporters of both sides was not to lose.

There was not an air of confidence around St Mary's at 7am on Sunday morning, most Southampton supporters I spoke to, where not predicting a win for their side, indeed the feeling was one foreboding of what was ahead.

The first coaches got away dead on time and thus the M27 derby day was finally underway, it was time for the talking to stop and the action on the field to take centre stage, Ok not quite time for the talking to stop, after all those on the first coaches arrived at Fratton Park some 2 3/4 hours before kick off.

As you would expect the atmosphere was electric at kick off with both sets of supporters raising the roof, Saints job was to dig in, quieten the crowd and then impose themselves and in the first half that was what they did and whilst their defence was rarely troubled, it took two great saves by the Pompey keeper to keep things level at the break.

Pompey had one tactic hump it forward at every opportunity and try to get under it, they will claim they were pressurising Saints, but the truth is we dealt with it quite easily.

You could see why James Bree had been recalled and brought in at right back, he added some height to a back four that Elias Jelert for all his talents could not do, both Bree and Welington were ideal in this type of game.

Aside from the two chances the only real moment of excitement in the half was when the Pompey fans in the front row of the North Stand seemed to try and pull a Saints player into the crowd, a scuffle ensued and stewards arrived, but they seemed scared to actually do anything, Pompey have form in this sort of thing, a Sunderland player being hauled into the stand a few years ago in roughly the same spot.

Around me some were critical of Finn Azaz but he was the man who called the shots, putting Adam Armstrong through for the best chance of the first half and then on 57 minutes repeating the trick for Leo Scienza.

In all honesty it was a terrible clearance from James Bree, he booted the ball high and seemingly directionless from the right back spot, it came down somewhere near the half way line on the left hand side, under it was Finn Azaz who brought it under control with one touch and then with his second touch played Leo Scienza in on goal.

Scienza finished with his usual aplomb, cutting across the chasing defender and then firing home to send the travelling Saints fans wild.

He seemed to take his celebrations over to that section of the North Stand that tried to haul him into the crowd in the first half.

You would have hoped that now Saints had the lead they would take control, a double change on 63 minutes looked good, Shea Charles to add steel to the midfield and also Tom Fellows for Matsuki, surely we would go on to win it now.

But the game swung when Leo Scienza had to go off with an injury, Jay Robinson came on and in truth was not the right player for the time, we needed someone to hold the ball up and that is not really his game.

But although Saints tried to play along the ground, for Pompey it was all about humping it forward and trying to win either corners or other dead ball situation and we paid the price in the 77th minute.

Perhaps a lapse of concentration, but a Pompey corner was flashed across the six yard box, you need the keeper to be big and strong in these situations, in the confusion it hit one of our players and came back across the goal and it was the blue shirt of Adams who headed home, although had their been VAR it would have been disallowed as it was a poor header on to his arm and then into the goal.

Either way Pompey were equal and you feared that the last part of the game might be a bit tricky.

In hindsight that turned out not to be the case, although we now never looked like winning it, our substitutions seemingly having knocked our rhythm, Pompey's hit and hood tactics might have shook the nerves a little, but never really trouble us.

This was a game that our players had to roll up their sleeves and get down in the dirt and show some fight and although it didn't look pretty that is what we did defensively, in a game where when Pompey had the ball it usually by passed the midfield.

So all honours even in a result that did little for either sides ambitions, it pulled Pompey out of the relegation zone, so a moral victory for them, but they are still in big trouble.

From a Southampton perspective it leaves us 7 points off the play offs and we are starting to slip behind the promotion hopefuls, we need a run of wins and we need the quickly, the play offs are not out of our reach just yet, but we have to start winning games and keep winning them.

Much has been made in the Pompey press that we haven't won at Fratton Park in the League in 50 years, that is true, but from a Saints perspective, Pompey haven't ever won at St Mary's in the League, indeed they have won just once in Southampton in the league last 62 years, that coming in January 1988, some 38 years ago.

This is a game that in the last half century doesn't happen very often and when it does is usually a draw.

The famous Portsmouth Atmosphere was not that impressive, it was good at times, but for long periods in was subdued, perhaps the problem was that Pompey fans were more concerned about hating all things Southampton than they were about supporting Portsmouth.

Onwards and hopefully upwards for Southampton, for Pompey I think they have a tough few months ahead.

Their goal was a clear handball. Adams pushed the ball into the net with the crook of his right arm.

Unfortunately when called upon for a key contribution our goalie showed the composure of U10s level… and that is probably harsh on our U10 goalie!

Good report. I would add that the ref had a big impact. A lot of comment said that he had a good game by letting everything go, thus creating a 'traditional' derby atmosphere. All very well but it drained the game of any possible quality and lessened our chances as it brought everything down to the 'passionate intensity' level which was all Poopey had.

As an ardent anti-VARer I have to just accept the hand ball. It was difficult to spot and I only saw one (half-hearted) appeal from a Saints player.

Whereas Poopey definitely edged the first match I thought we edged this one. As for a play-off push - no chance without signing at least one good centre-back. Maybe a cup run is our best hope for a meaningful end of season.

At lest the new keeper seems to be able to kick the ball rather than just pass every ball out to his defense.

I don’t think you can blame James Bree for the goal if you clear a ball to the half way line it should be defendable from there.I thought we looked a lot more solid at the back and Wellington is a major upgrade on Manning

I think those criticising the goalie, have got to remember that this is his 4th game in a new team, and league, and that before that he wasn't a regular player. When it comes to goal mouth scrambles, and deflections that is when form and instinct come in, and so I at least can forgive a bit of nervousness.
Ask yourself, what would Bazunu have done ? He'd not have moved with the ball coming across him (as always), flapped and got no-where near it, so we're no worse off.
But Peretz haz proved he can kick it. Our defence has proved that as a back 4, although still not Brilliant they are "ok" and that they trust the keeper behind them.
Thats a 1000% improvement in the last 2 games to what we saw with Baz between the sticks.

Missed chances and missed defensive headers and organisation reflect the outcome of this game from the Saints perspective. There is no way we will get into the play-offs unless our central defense is strengthened by the addition of someone with an on-pitch managing air about them. Bree and Welington should always be included in the matchday squad, together with Jelert. It has to be Harwood-Bellis at CB for me but, we really need a new mate alongside him.

I quite enjoyed the game overall
It's not difficult to see why Pompey are in a big relegation dog fight Norwich,Blackburn and Oxford have all looked better than them No quality and no class
Again missed chances cost us We could have been 2 up at half time I hope we will soon see Stewart and Armstrong in the starting 11
Azazz showed that he can be a very influential play maker Two brilliant passes should have both led to goals
Charles got some good minutes in When fit will he partner Downes or Jander as a holding pair?
Will we keep Bree or take a small fee from Charlton? If he stays he needs a new contract
Over the 2 games honours even I think We can do it again next year probably/possibly

Thought THB was our man of the match despite him being unable to clear the ball for their goal. In the first half in particular he snuffed out everything that they threw forward. Not sure about the keeper either way yet, there was a sea of bodies in front of him for their handball goal so I find it difficult to blame him for that.

Really hope Scienza’s injury is not serious as, although he had a less influential goal bar the goal, he is always a joy to watch.

As you say Nick, really need to put a run of wins together. COYS.

I also enjoyed the game. Big step up in passion from the first match. Downes and THB seemed to reignite and play better. Matasuki although quite busy didn't play particularly well. Azaz made a few great passes that should have been assists. Scienzas celebration after his goal was just iconic.

We had the upper hand in the first half but couldn't convert our chances. Poopey?/ Pompey came back into it in the second half.

The subs were pretty ineffective, although Shea Charles was good in the limited time he had. Robinson and Stewart didn't do much at all which was very disappointing.

Goal was the usual poorly defended set piece, agree Id rather have the odd handball given against us than VAR but we should have scored more and put the game beyond reach long before this. This should have just been a consolation goal.

Could have gone with the win but a point away is worth having.

I thought our team selection and shape were right. Fellows has a lot to offer going forward, but we needed more control in midfield, certainly in a derby away from home, so starting Matsuki made sense in my view.

Overall, we played pretty well. The main thing we’ve been asking for is a bit of fight, and we showed that throughout the entire game.

I actually thought it was a good derby. Saints edged it, but a draw was probably a fair result. We needed to take one of those first-half chances, and if we did, we might have won.

Two poor teams ( other than Leo ) got what they both deserved, a draw.

Only difference ? Sports Republic’s recruitment team spent £50 million in the summer window and Portsmouth next to nothing.

Any lingering hopes of a playoff place passed weeks ago and just as well, as with our current squad we would get murdered week in and week out if we somehow manage to sneak into The Premier League.

With just 6 shots (and 4 on target), we lacked much in having only Armstrong up front, whilst Pompey's 14 shots came to nothing, and in the end they only won by a handball. Where was VAR when we needed it, as a proper check would have disallowed their goal and we'd have taken all 3 points. Well-taken effort by Scienza, who'se been in that same situation several times before this season, but nut-megged their keeper to give us the lead.

I didn't think we were going to concede, but there was no way that the ref. was going to disallow their goal and walk away. On another day he'd have booked half-a-dozen players.

Aside from comments about Bree's high ball, I thought he did well. He was always a sub. for KWP after signing for us and he seemed to fit seemlessly into the back 4. I though that he (and Charlie Taylor) got a rough deal when Will Still sent them out on loan, (probably because they knew more about the game than Will did (and it embarrassed him).
Bree is the only established RB at this level, and should keep his place based on this .
Welington also showed he wasn't afraid to get in the mix, and Matsuki, (though not so skilful) wasn't shying away from tough challenges either. Look forward to NOT meeting them again next season, but not sure about the final outcome for both sides.

So after watching the 10 minutes of highlights that I could find on the WEB - I have to say that AA has no confidence at the moment - He should have scored that breakaway (like LEO). As for our Keeper - you can make excuses if you want, but he should have come out for that ball and punched it. This is practiced everyday, so saying he hasn't played etc., is just an excuse.
This is a game of margins and currently we are not taking advantage of our chances. We should have been up 2 goals at halftime. That is the difference between a mid-level team and a relegation team. They took their once chance (even with a handball) and even the score. On to the next one.

We played with improved spirit; would that we could always register so highly in the blood-and-guts department! But it has to translate into goals, and aside from Scienza, of course, it didn't.

forgot to add the 2 chances for armstrong not put away yet again he really is a wastefull striker yes 11 goals but out of some 70 attempts not good and yes the goal for portsmouth was the same that che adams had disallowed against wolves in the first relegation season that might have made a difference . James bree good luck to him he was a revelation at full back simple but effective my god we really do have low expectations nowadays

We were up against a side in the relegation places missing some of their best players. They were so short they had full-backs playing as centre-backs.

We were full strength and still couldn’t beat them. It was really poor and the game management from our manager, Spors mate, was rubbish.

Our performance was poor.

We have no chance of getting to the play-offs.

I also enjoyed this game, more like football used to be, less tippy tappy at the back, more rough and tumble. Credit to the ref for letting things go, another ref could haven given 6 yellows per team!

I thought the referee was excellent and allow a football match to flow and not allow the usual stop go we all have to endure.
We lost our way with the subs who fail to make the impact we needed and hung on towards the end.
The balance of the side looked much better with both fullbacks in the main doing what defenders do.
Sports Republic need to sign a strong left sided centre back who can actually win headers for us to move on. We need to move on from Wood, Manning and probably Stephens.

A couple of observations.

I don't want Ryan Manning anywhere near our defence, but I think he could have added something in attacking midfield when we took Azaz off. He is creative and can pass let's use his strengths. We were toothless for the last 20 and I think Manning could have changed that.

I would have preferred Armstrong stay on in the RW position when we bought on Stewart. You know AA is fit enough to run for the full 90, I would leave him on.

Felt downs tackle that started the melee gave the Pompey players and crowd something to fight for and changed the game in their favour

We look better as a 4 until Stephen's and THB decide to go for the same ball twice a match

Once we take our chances we can win these games, we are close but could so do with another striker in the Stewart mould which downes was supposed to be
