Ward 13:53 - May 9 with 1803 views | I_would | Surely if this bloke is considered to be a 'dead ball specialist' he has to hit a dead ball well. All I saw yesterday was corners either short to the nearest opposition player, straight to the safe arms of their keeper or so long that a groundsman had to retrieve it. Time to let a more talented 'specialist' have a go. Couldn't be any worse than Ward. Oh and teaching Ward how to mark and defend might save us a few points. He's a 'specialist' at clapping his thighs after we concede every time he gives up chasing. [Post edited 9 May 2021 14:07]

Ward on 17:04 - May 10 with 1440 views | DorsetIan | Brilliant free kicks. Mystery to me why we don't organise tactically to be running directly at defences to pick up far more than we do. I think he is excellent defensively. He is doing an awful lot of sweeping up at the moment. For a 'dead ball specialist' I think his corners are too often disappointing. Creatively in midfield he is also disappointing. Armstrong get the balls and looks to run forward. JWP's first thought is usually sideways.

you know he is in the top 10 in the league for forwards passes right? and for passes into the oppo box? For some one who always passes side ways and backwards thats pretty high.

If that's true, I'm amazed. He certainly doesn't give that impression. Not doubting you, just don't see it.

With the loss of Romeu and Ralph preferring Armstrong in the centre before Diallo JWP's role has changed a little in recent weeks, with Romeu he could get forward more, now he is the defensive player with Armstrong making the surging runs. When we attack Armstrong makes the runs JWP has to sit and hold. We are near of at the top of the list for goals from set pieces in the Premier League, we can't ask much more than that

I agree with most of that - particularly that Romeu's absence has increased his defensive duties. I do think though that there's a psychological difference between him and Armstrong even when they're both supposedly in attacking roles. Armstrong very often runs forward directly whereas JWP rarely does and is much more likely to spread the ball wide. I think so much of winning football games is about putting an opposition's defence under quick pressure, catching them on the backfoot, not giving them a chance to settle. Running straight at them is so much more effective in that respect. Sideways moves (or say Redmond running forward and then pausing on the edge of the box) often loses that element of speed - giving the defenders just that split second they need to get into a defensive shape. KWP is also getting better at running directly at the defence. When he sharpens up his final ball (which he will), he will create a lot of chances. Tella too has shown his instance to run directly at them.

Ward on 10:13 - May 11 with 1124 views | Sadoldgit | JWP has worked his socks off for us this season and as far as I am concerned he his up there with KWP as the most consistent player. He has clearly scored enough from dead ball situations to be called a specialist.
