| Budget Speculation - Part Deux 2025 20:43 - Sep 19 with 18414 views | JACKMANANDBOY | This year the talk is about a range of tax rises to areas such as wealth, pensions and savings, fuel duty and property taxes. The clear risk here is that these measures will take money out of the economy as people move money between asset classes and the property market slows. A slow property market has a wide impact on legal services, building companies, DIY, furniture, white goods etc. We are likely to see a lack of confidence in spending, combined with further pressure on some sectors pushing up prices and unemployment adding to today's problems. Let's hope Reeves decides to stimulate confidence and get more money moving in the economy, the back benches seem to have won the day on Welfare Reform so I doubt it. PS Why Part Deux, because the French are in the merde and we are not far behind them. [Post edited 8 Oct 11:59]

| Budget Speculation - Part Deux 2025 on 09:45 - Sep 21 by majorraglan | The world has changed significantly and a 90% top rate of tax is ridiculous. It’s about having a balance, the rich and affluent have to pay their share, but if they are crucified they’ll upsticks and emigrate. Going back to the 1950’s and 1960’s when we had those tax rates, it was very difficult for people to move around like they can today, no golden visas, you couldn’t be in Oz or New Zealand in 24 hours, no internet etc to keep in touch with families, accessing good healthcare was an issue in many places. These days you can be anywhere in 2 days, access top healthcare almost anywhere in the world if you have the cash etc. We can’t live in the past, referring to things that happened 70 years ago is crackers. The world society has changed and we need to move with it. |
Absolutely the World has changed and 90% top rate of tax would be ridiculous now but I put it up to show what rich people used to pay and what they pay now because I'm sure most people would have no idea historical levels of taxation in the UK, I don't want them thinking the rich are hard done by when I think the opposite is true. I think tax on rich individuals and very profitable corporations should be increased and if them means a percentage leaving then good, I don't say that to be arsey, I don't want money oriented people that don't care about their country here, they can go and live behind a wall or fence in a country that will tax them less but obviously due to lack of taxation that leads to gated communities and high crime.

The five grand the Government gets back from someone who it gave it to in the first place is not. This is not a difficult concept. |

The people that create the wealth work in the private sector, teachers, police ect don't create wealth, people like me pay their wages and I object to paying them even more money. The country can't afford their pensions, my family that worked in those jobs their pensions are so high you have to wonder how the country can afford it.

Using the car by a fit for purpose individual , but should only be used as the other half is claiming benefits , should be in the passengrer seat for that reason , that is why you have the latest plate top of the range motor and chuck in a blue badge to help you along . All disabilities can not be seen and I undesrtand , but sometimes the cleverer folk amonst us really know how to milk the system . You can also get extra money on Universal Credit for having a child in receipt of DLA, even though that's the point of DLA in the first place. DLA/PIP need a thorough looking at as they're essentially almost a "Gateway" to some serious cash.

Our taxes are so high because governments give a hell of a lot of taxpayers money away, especially this lot now.

They do, the amount of wastage is criminal but it’s also deeply ideological, the desire to punish people for having the temerity to earn a bit of coin is ingrained in them. Wealth is a dirty word so they must have it taken off them.

It seems ingrained in the minds of those with more socialist leanings that any one who works hard to better them selves should carry the burden of supporting those who don't. Some think for example that farmers are the devil incarnate and should be kept below the poverty line because they sometimes show the trappings of their hard work, the socialist mantra seems to me that it should be a race to the bottom.

The Resolution Foundation vision for 2030 highlights how small business owners are ripe for taxation as is the hospitality industry where the middle classes will be more than able to accept increased prices. https://economy2030.resolutionfoundation.org/ There's pages and pages and here are some some tax recommendations - sound familiar? The Government should make permanent currently temporary full expensing of business investment within Corporation Tax, and ideally extend its scope to all investment, while keeping the headline rate stable over time. Business rates should exempt new construction and improvements from the tax base, so that the tax converges to a land tax. The VAT registration threshold should be cut to £30,000 A new per-mile ‘Road Duty’ system should mirror Fuel Duty for electric cars Council Tax should move to a flat rate within Local Authorities based on up-to-date valuations, while the higher threshold for residential Stamp Duty should be made permanent and the rate on more expensive properties cut. Tax rates on different kinds of income should be equalised but very high marginal rates should be removed, through higher dividend and Capital Gains taxes and higher top National Insurance rates for the self-employed, offset by indexing capital gains to inflation, a cut in employer National Insurance, reinstating the Personal Allowance above £100,000 and abolishing the High Income Child Benefit Charge. The Government should reform taxes on pensions and inheritance to raise more revenue and make them more progressive

Hitting the disabled again, disabled and pensioners are easy targets. She's borrowed another 22 billion now then, where's that going I wonder. Must be a another needy country looking for a hand out, better to do that than spend it where it should be spent.
