A terrible day for football. I can clearly remember it unfolding when the TV went live to the disaster. My mind could not comprehend what my eyes were watching, but somehow you could not look away.

RIP to all those who went to a football match that day and didn't come home. It should never have happened.

Very sensitive for me
One of my troops asked me for a day in lieu to go there
He was one of those giving CPR on the pitch
He left the job soon after in disgust and bought a pub in Knarsborough
Saw him ten yrs later and stayed overnight
He hadn’t got over it at all

The commentary of Swansea's own Peter Jones has stayed with me down the years as he held it together witnessing the horror unfold. He also saw the Heysel disaster first hand 4 years earlier.

He collapsed and died a year later aged 60. Many say that he never got over what he saw that day and it took its toll on his health. I wonder how many more people who were there that day have some form of PTSD. My guess would be hundreds. Kenny Dalgleish never seemed the same after that day and attending all those funerals. He had a haunted look about him for years afterwards in dealings with the press. The first time he seemed upbeat was when Blackburn won the PL in 95.
