Saints Cannot Attack And Defend
at 13:07:49

The most worrying thing about our last two league defeats has been our spineless performances. Too many players have appeared to lack the passion and commitment required to compete at this level. This is probably down to a combination of a lack of confidence in each other, lack of genuine pride in playing for the club and having their mind on other places and a lack of belief in a new system and the ability to adapt to it. Whatever the reason for the embarrassing level of performance we have had to suffer, I feel we need to select a team of players who have shown that they really care and are likely to give their all for the cause. Players I would include in this category are
Davis, Romeu, Yoshida (to replace Hoedt} Stephens, Ward-Prowse, Long, Hojbjberg, Sims, McQueen.
If we are to be relegated, let us at least go down with a fight!

Day 29 ! Where Is The Central Defender ?
at 11:33:25

As I have stated on this site before, a decent goalkeeper who can deal commandingly and competently with crosses would go a long way to solving our perceived defensive problems.

Day 11 Still No Incoming
at 17:32:38

SaintNick, are you trying to absolve Forster from blame for all the close range goals scored against us resulting from crosses into the box, and saying poor marking each time by the central defenders was the problem? I usually agree with many points you make on this site but I am surprised you do not appear to appreciate that a commanding keeper, by claiming the ball from crosses can control such situations before they become a goal threat. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but as I remember it, McCarthy was in goal for the Palace game.

Day 11 Still No Incoming
at 13:05:29

I do not think a replacement for VVD is our main concern. I think our problems at the back have largely been down to inept goalkeeping. Too many goals have been conceded from close range headers with Forster rooted to his line. His inability to command his area and to deal with crosses has cost us dear. Leaving the central defenders repeatedly having to cope alone with high balls inevitably means they will not always be successful. It is well known that a confident, positive goalkeeper spreads confidence to the rest of the defence so it is hardly surprising that we have looked less than secure this season. If McCarthy is not seen as the answer then a top priority should be to sign a decent keeper who is capable of rectifying these issues.
It also seems to me we should sign a quality striker and a creative midfielder - easier said than done I guess. At the very least we need some additions to refresh the squad.

Koeman for Barcelona? I understand there is still a managerial vacancy at Gillingham.

Saints Can Look At Top Six Finish After A Solid Start To Season.
at 12:02:29

As 1962 saint points out, we have played 6 of our 9 games at home. Worryingly, we have managed to gain only 8 points from these games, hardly the form of a 'top six' team. Our ponderous build up play and lack of a clinical finishing edge make us easy to defend against. Forster continues to be a source of great concern. I think the defence has coped quite well generally, despite having a goalkeeper behind them who creates so much indecision and uncertainty. He appears to lack the ability to deal with centres and to catch high balls. To add to his weaknesses, he has conceded several goals this season after ill-directed initial blocks by him. As for Yoshida, he is a much improved player in my opinion, reading the game well and making very few mistakes. Also, he has been our main goal threat in many games!

Dutch World Cup Hopes Boost Help Saints Van Dijk Situation
at 15:06:26

VVD has got to ask himself what he has got to gain if he decides not to play for the Saints up to the January transfer window. By then he will not have played any Premier League football for nearly a year. Having had a serious injury, and not having proved that he is still a top class player since his recovery, what team is going to 'risk' £70M plus on him? Also, as Nick says, serious questions will (or should) be asked about his character.

Saints Want Walcott To Return As Part Of Van Dijk Deal !
at 14:09:53

I thought VVD wanted Champions League football so why would he want to sign for Arsenal? They must be well down on his list of 'top clubs' he would be willing to join even if Saints renege on their stated intention that they will not sell him in this transfer window

Are Liverpool At It Again?
at 17:46:50

For Aldridge, and any other ex pro, to 'encourage a professional to 'go on strike' is despicable and shows how unprincipled and morally corrupt they are. I do hope that VVD can rise above this, whatever his future holds, by conducting himself with real professionalism and integrity. Morgan Schneiderlin, for example, certainly showed the right way to respond after being denied a transfer for a year.

I live in hope that Liverpool are punished by the FA for their behaviour (a transfer ban would seem appropriate and very pleasing!) but I doubt if they have the courage to impose any meaningful sanctions.

Saints V Manchester City The Verdict
at 14:57:43

One issue that has been a real concern to me this season has been the recurring weakness of Fraser Forster. Although he is 6ft 5ins. tall, he seems unwilling to command his area and routinely catch crosses - apart from some feeble attempts v Crystal Palace. Two of City's goals were scored from close range headers. Obviously, with a keeper rooted to his line, it puts huge pressure on the defence to deal with these situations and, inevitably, leads to them being out jumped at times. If Forster really can't rectify this serious problem then he needs to be replaced by a keeper who has the ability and confidence to deal with centres.
