Saints V Norwich The Preview
at 14:43:28

JWP deserves a place on the team mainly because the rest of the players are not much better.

Yes he has scored in the last few games-but he is like a golfer who scores a hole in one every few tournaments. You marvel at the shot, amazed at how he got it just right, but forget that his drives, approaches and putts are generally wide of the mark. So you just watch and hope he can catch the lightning in a bottle.

I am happy he was able to score on the follow-up after missing the penalty because he would have really heard it from the fans. But having said that, he should not have been taking it in the first place.

I prefer him not taking corners, but hanging around the top of the box and pouncing on the ball as it bounces around in the area. He seems more productive there.

Nick, I for one am not offended......In fact I agree with you completely that laughing will soon be a crime....but unfortunately, there are people out there just looking for a fight and I would hate to see posters on this sight who are friendly and respectful discussing the Saints now start slagging each other just because of their differing non-football views. (That's what the forum is for!)

All the best and thanks for you work.

Nick, you know this appears above the comment box?

"Please keep News Comments on topic. To make wider points, visit the forum. Do not post bad language or libellous content."

I for one like this site because you can get away from the political cr@p that infects the rest of the internet. (It's like a quiet pub where you can sit in the dark and cry into your pint while thinking about the Saints)

Board Shake Up Needed
at 16:41:07

So Mr. Gao is not involved in the day to day running of the club, but he has time to read our comments on the uglyinside and bow to the "pressure" and get rid of Reed and Krueger???

"The big players in football ownership look at the big clubs with the potential to become a Big Six club, that means a big fan base that stays loyal whatever and turns up week in week out, because big fan bases generate big incomes."

Winning teams generate big fan bases (locally and worldwide).
As 1970 points out, the catchment area is a huge market with potential for a huge fan base and yet Saints have never been aggressive enough in going after that market. Now the other more successful south coast teams will be able to tap into it.

There have been good owners, average owners and downright dodgy owners in football (and other sports), but can you think of one that would have let that 9-0 thrashing at home go without a apology to the fans/public rant at the players and staff/staff shakeup?
I can't.

P.S. If the Saints want a Director of Football who won't let the players and staff get away with their "Can't be bothered" attitude, I nominate Sweary Mike!

Rumoured Departure Hints At Coaching Shake Up At Saints
at 14:46:30

OK, so the Saints have only won 2 games all season, get destroyed 9-0 at home and are barely above the relegation zone and the board's response is to sack the U23 ????

You know, many's the time I have been watching our defense get caught out of position, the midfielders move the ball backwards instead of forward, and the strikers miss sitters, and I have said to myself: "This is all because we have the wrong U23 coach!"

The board doesn't have a clue and the owner(s) doesn't care.

Everton Game Now Massive !
at 18:56:19

If you have been following the Saints the last few years, every game is a Must Win. However the players, board and owner(s) don't see it the same way: Same PR statements:

A Win-"No changes need to be made and we have the right squad to climb the table. No money needs to be spent even if we lose the next game." Nick: " We would have kept a clean sheet if not for Yoshi."

A Draw- "Should have got 3 points, but were unlucky. Still happy with a point and the lads put in a good effort so we have the team we want. No changes need to be made." Nick: "We would have had win if not for Yoshi."

A Loss-"Would have loved to get something out of it. But the lads put in a great effort and we didn't lose 9-0, so we have the squad we need. No changes need to be made" Nick: "We would have got a point if not for Yoshi."

Then we wind up hoping to avoid relegation because there are 3 teams worse that us.....

Newspaper Claims Saints Squad Missing Rohl
at 15:50:46

The main problem is lack of talent/character on the field. This is just a lame excuse by the players to shift the spotlight away from them.

If you accept the theory that the mess we are in all comes down Rohl leaving, then that means Ralph is a crap manager, and even worse, any of his past success is not because of his talent as a manager, , but him taking the credit for Rohl's work.

Although if you follow that line, it would mean Rohl left because he was sick and tired of this.....

Anyway, enough of this excuse making....where is the outraged owner ranting in the papers and on TV? How this is situation is a disgrace? Promising heads will roll? Telling the fans he's as ashamed as they are?

But I forget.....this is the Saints, not other teams.....

Absolutely ******* Disgraceful
at 14:54:31

Glad you are back to your Yoshi bashing self, Nick. We were worried about you!

Although, I thought maybe the absence of your verdict post was due to you finally seeing the light and lacing into the owners and board since Koeman left, using such language that your post was banned! But apparently not....

Les & Ralph we not "hounded out" rather, they hounded Fonte out and the team has been leaderless since then.

The VAR is there to make the right call-which it did. Remember, if not for VAR, we would be the bottom of the league.

The entire team is crap. To blame just the defenders is wrong. When you have a game like this, EVERYONE on the pitch has to get into survival mode, booting the ball clear every chance they get to keep the score down. But that takes, leadership, character and pride, unfortunately, three qualities our players are sadly lacking..... (four if you count ability to play at the top professional level).......but if the owner(s) don't care, why should the employees??

Hasenhuttl Showed His Tactical Skills Against Wolves.
at 16:16:09

I think sometimes you are winding us up Nick. Just yesterday you posted an article about the Saints having the worst defense in the league. Surely the manager's tactics must have something to do with that?------or is it all Yoshi's fault?

As for "...Hasenhuttl's job is to keep our heads above water till then and then hopefully we can make a signing or two in January" Isn't that a cutandpaste? over the last few years? Just substitute the manager's name at the beginning and swap the words "January" and "Summer" at the end..

Saints Need To Get Fans Back Onside With A Home Win
at 15:19:46

Once again, "Blame the Fans" (Yoshi gets a day off?)

Badly organized defense, knocking the ball backwards instead of forwards, corners and free kicks are never a threat. Yeah, if only the fans sang louder all this would change.

"...but six months ago when we were beating Wolves, Spurs and Everton it was as good as it has been in several years,...." Exactly! if the team plays with some determination and actually try to win games, the fans will appreciate the effort and respond. Fans can accept losing, but they cannot abide lack of effort.

"But the fans care most about results and in many respects judge a football club purely on this basis, if it is winning games then it must be well run, if it is losing them it must be poorly run." .........uh,...yeah, that's how it works in sports.....

Back To The Southampton Way
at 19:59:12

While they have the broom out, how about the backroom staff discussed in a previous posting??

"...it will take a number of transfer windows..."
Translation: The owner's not putting any more money in, so just accept the fact that Saints will not be very active in the transfer market for years. Usually teams try to be optimistic for the fans and say " we need a couple of transfer windows to sort it out" Looks like Saints are telling us to prepare for years of mediocrity.

I don't know if this makes me a fully fledged member of the "unenlightened" club, but my criticism of Krueger was not that he had a hockey background (Every fan from every sport knows what makes sport and sports fans tick-WINNING!), it was the fact that he only had a minor league coaching background.

Nick I can't understand why you keep repeating this falsehood that Ralph had "......knowledge of running big sporting franchises in the USA...." This is simply not true. Come on, name just one! What really confuses me is that you have said in the past you have followed the NHL so you can't claim you are confused.

P.S. Krueger is now in his (only ) second coaching job in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres and has them off to a great start, and best of luck to him....but remember they hired him as Coach, he answers to Jason Botterill the General Manager. It's he who oversees the hiring/drafting/trading of players (and coaches).

Saints Need Backroom Overhaul
at 14:30:00

It's a formula for failure. New managers/coaches in all sports clear house and bring in "their people". They want to set things up the way they want, with people they have confidence in, people who are on the same page as to training methods, tactics, talent spotting, etc. After all, it's their head on the block if things don't go right.

Managers have enough to do getting the players to buy into their methods, they can't be hampered by having to win over the backroom staff as well. When the backroom staff knows they won't be let go no matter what, they have the attitude "We'll still be here when they sack him." It leads to insubordination and anonymous leaks to the press.

Why would any manager agree to that? Is that why in the past few years when the Saints have been linked to a manager, they immediately say they are not interested because they know they will not be completely in control?

Time To Identify The Real Cause Of Saints Problems !
at 15:22:23

Well, it's that time of the year again!
Here we are 8 games in and:

-We wonder why other small clubs such as Brighton and Bournemouth, etc. are playing better, with more drive and urgency, taking the game to opponents, while Saints are happy to knock the ball around in midfield.
-Nick posts an article correctly pointing out how crap our defenders are (Yoshi in particular) ever since Fonte left -although he was happy to see the back of him at the time.
-I point out that yes, our defense is crap, but our offense is just as bad-only 8 goals in 8 games (two gifts from blundering goal keepers)-which means our defense would have to be perfect, keeping a clean sheet in every game for us to have a chance. I point out that when Pelle and Mane left, 23 goals left with them (and I get my dig in that Nick said at the time they were "easily replaced") and that issue has never been properly sorted. We don't have one player that scares the opposition, making them focus their game plan on him.
-The previous year we had a good goal keeper who, for some reason started making stupid mistakes. He's replaced. The new man is making great saves-winning games for us. But when the new season starts, he starts making stupid mistakes.
-We wonder what the manager is thinking when losing by 2 or 3 goals he waits until the last 10 minutes to bring on players who might get a goal.
-Ownership is silent.
-We keep hoping everything gets sorted during the next international break.
- We find ourselves again desperately looking around trying to spot 3 teams that are worse that us.

It's just a re-occurring nightmare. I am afraid that when we wake up, we will be in the Championship.

Saints At Pompey The Verdict
at 14:44:40

Great win, but as other have mentioned, with the difference in leagues (money) any different result would have been humiliating (and they had their chances).

I was glad to see Ings and Adams starting as they would have more experience with the tough physical play of the the lower leagues than our other options. Worked great for Ings, but not for Adams. Sooner or later he has to score.........hopefully sooner!

Ralph Hails Defensive Improvement ! But Is He Right To ?
at 14:11:39

As SonicBoom says, we have needed a proper CB/leader since Fonte left and for one reason or another we have not addressed that issue. Yes, it looked like it was sorted when we got Van Sulk, but when he left there never seemed to be any urgency to get a replacement.

If RH likes developing young players, why hasn't he brought in a seasoned defender to lead and mentor the youngsters?

Pompey's Top Fan Refused Entry To St Mary's
at 14:28:02

I really thought he was banned for life. Why the stewards even considered allowing him in is beyond me. If he had urinated in an office building, you can be sure he would be arrested and banned from the building-with security on alert to never let him in. There would be no discussion about letting him in because he was there to see a different company from last time.

It's a joke to suggest that his behaviour is that of of an "educated" or "very generous and caring" man.

But, he still got what he wanted: Playing the victim to the press.

Saints Summer Transfer Window Assessed

Clearing out the dead wood will take a few windows-other teams are not going to pay top prices for players they know you want to get rid of.

SaintPaulVW-Speaking of the "Newcastle Way" :

When I watched it a month ago, (skip to the supporter talking at 3:30) I'm thinking, that sounds just like the Saints under Les Reed!"

Hopefully the feeder team attitude went out the door with Les and we will get players that want to play for the Saints and accomplish something in the league.
