I'm presuming this was tongue on cheek - not entirely sure it's a "curse" when a universally loved guy dies at 86, one (Phillips) is alive at 93, another (Jacobi) is still working at 88, and Blessed has just turned 90 and still apparently a force of nature.
A couple of the others (Bernard Hepton, Barbara Young,) made it into their 90s
Think I might skip over the Biggins issue, though he was terrific as Nero.
James Faulkner (Herod) also still going at the age of 78
I Clavdivs was where I first saw Stewart, and he was seriously scary, but the thing that really impressed me was his cameo as Karla in Tinker Tailor - just one scene opposite Alec Guinness, with no words, and he dominates it utterly, though Guinness is brilliant in the framing scene. |

Very much agree with all of that.
We live in a world of squads rather than 1st XIs these days. For a long time we really struggled with that as a club, even a small number of injuries could really drag down the quality of the team.
This year we do seem to have more depth (and just as well really)
Probably the most impressive thing is that a couple of those aren't due to being clever n the transfer market, but down to players we already have stepping up a level. |

Interesting point.
No idea what the average number of injuries is but I did go and look at the Swansea "Jack Army" forum match thread for interest (reasonable bunch, quite respectful of us before KO) and somewhere there complained of being beaten by a QPR "second string" side due to all our injuries, and I thought: who in our starting XI was really "second string"?
Adamson would've been pre-season but not now, I think. Most of us would have Madsen and/or Chair in, if fit, ahead of either Varane or Vale but neither of those are exactly a surprise as starters.
It has taken us years to get to this point, but we do seem to have a reasonable degree of cover and I think even the striker position would be OK if Kolli is included. |

My first memory of Jimmy was in a pre-season friendly when I think we rested Dickie - google suggests it may have been v Cambridge, in between the friendly v Man U which we won and the one v Leicester (when they were still good) which we drew 3-3
The Cambridge game was a bit more fringe players but I was really impressed with Dunne - didn't think he had Dickie's class but very strong and mature for his age.
Not sure how often they played together in the middle - vaguely have Barbet and Dickie as 1st choice pairing in my head |

There's a reference upthread to his excellent partnership with Edwards.
Am I being old-fashioned in thinking that a classic centre back pairing has one guy who reads the game and can bring the ball out of defence and one guy you can rely on to flatten the striker when needed?
Big oversimplification here, good defenders can do at least a bit of both, but the Edwards/Dunne combo does remind me of classic pairings of the past - Roeder/Hazell, Fenwick/Wicks, Maddix/McDonald... |

Many condolences.
Never met your dad but felt I knew him through this place and he was always a voice of reason. The no-nonsense way he told us all about his prognosis was typical.
I'll also always remember his dry humour ("I shall call him Dave")

Pro tip from one of my customers in Tewkesbury, who was cut off by floods for a couple of weeks in 2007: if you've got a good supply of booze you can swap it for almost anything else, as there's bugger all to do apart from drink. |

Absolutely not going to have a pop at Kolli and, as you say, at 5-0 it doesn't matter much, but if he'd squared the ball it would have been a great move and I'd be first to sing his praises.
Since we're mainly talking about the manager in this thread, I actually hope he has a word with Kelli about that - it's the sort of thing Kolli can learn from and get better
Getting back to being positive, it was great movement by young Alemayehu |

This is going to become a stuck record from me, but the important point is the last two sentences.
Horrendous as our injuries have been, this is a squad that plays as a squad, not just a few key individuals who carry the rest. |

I have to confess I stayed away from this place from the moment we conceded the third until KO today.
So I don't know what anyone said and for all I know it might have been perfectly justified; I just knew that reading it wasn't going to make me any happier and I was already pissed off enough by the actual Birmingham game. |

One of the really irritating things about losing 3-0 to Brum was it wiped out the +3 we'd got from beating Derby |

The injuries are very worrying, especially as you never know how well players will come back; but for me that makes the strong defensive performances, the spine and the general organisation so important - much easier to keep in touch with the right end of the table if at least we're hard to beat, much easier to slot a "reserve" player into a functioning side.
I hope I don't have to eat my words but I don't see this squad going into one of those long runs of defeats that have screwed up previous seasons. |
