Part of his Agent's big plan was for Stewart to use World Cup exposure to attract interest from bigger clubs, have a couple of good games for Scotland, maybe even a goal or two.

Other clubs will look on with astonishment at how quickly some fickle and credulous Southampton fans have turned on the man who delivered a successful season only months after it looked like a fight to stay in the division. And now you think he "bullied" that poor little boy, the same boy whose monumental stupidity led to this entire debacle. The "bullying" is pure speculation but you have latched onto it with the fervour that Middlesbrough fans exhibited calling for Southampton to be thrown out. If Southampton had been fined half a million but won the final I wonder if you would still think that Eckert had destroyed his legacy and that the poor little boy had been bullied? In which case where does the fault actually lie, with Eckert or with the punishment? |

The players will ultimately decide whether Tonda Eckert has any future with Southampton. If they are as angry (with him) as some rumours suggest then he needs to go. But if the bond between players and coach stays strong then forget what other club's fans think or say, appoint a caretaker coach with the understanding that his role will subject to review when Eckert's suspension concludes. The only person who definitely has no future is the idiotic kid who let everyone see him before running away to his hotel and his car dropping clues as he went. Perhaps he was working for Middlesbrough all along in which case he is the most skilful agent provocateur since Agent ZigZag. . [Post edited 26 May 11:16]

For instance, you might say there is no difference between stealing £200m and just stealing £2.50 but using it to buy a lottery ticket that *could* win £200m. Shift the context and it means the Brinks Matt robbers are no better or worse than a bloke lifting a box of swan vestas from a One Stop, but the bloke nicking the matches gets 20 years, same as them. That's the first point. The second point is to what extent did that spying actually alter the outcome of the game. There has to be a difference between (for example) spiking a player's food to get him out of a game (active), and just watching him to see whether or not he is going to play anyway (passive). If you aren't going to have any nuance then you have to have a single arbitrary punishment no matter what degree of crime was committed. In some ways this might encourage miscreants to take the nuclear option knowing that their punishment if caught would always be the same anyway. "Let's just run him over on the way to training". That is Middlesbrough /EFL logic as a parable. |

I also agree, and it says a lot about the support this club has that so many turn on "one of their own" at the drop of a hat rather than concentrate on the ownership of Middlesbrough who outwitted the Southampton board and turned a molehill into a media mountain. As Pep Guardiola said (in defence of Eckert) on the continent all clubs do it, it's just accepted as inevitable and to be honest uncontrollable, and he went on to point out that very little is actually gained anyway. How many results ever been altered by spying on a training session compared to turning the head of a star player with an illegal approach from a rogue agent? He might also have pointed out that smart clubs here will still do it, but use third parties, drones or even bribes to get some tiny nugget of info. I agree that ultimately the players as well as the EFL will decide his fate, but the speed at which fans turned on him will make him glad to leave. |

Of course it comes into it FFS - not every misdemeanour is the same - you don't treat every incidence identically do you. Your proposition is like saying anyone who commits a crime must be treated the same; they are a criminal and therefore the punishment must always be the maximum. Really? You would sentence somebody to 20 years for shoplifting? And as I said in another post. Everybody cheats. Every single club in the League cheats. THey don't all get found out though. |

Because every club cheats. It's not a question of whether a club cheats or not, it's a question of how much and whether they get caught. Getting tired of people simply stating that Southampton cheated when that is no different to saying that someone breathes. Talk about the marginal benefit of cheating and proportionality. Seeing a player not training is not the same as giving him a two footed tackle on the pitch and ending his season, but you seem to think that watching him not playing is a thousand times worse than breaking his ACL on the pitch and getting one player a months ban. Proportionality - it's a long word but you'll get the hang of it. |

All clubs cheat, in all sorts of ways. You only have to look at the false outrage from all the clubs behaving exactly as a child behaves when someone else is caught out. You join in throwing the stones as hard as you can as though this makes you appear on the side of right. Southampton's problem was the sheer incompetence of sending an inexperienced panicky boy where richer clubs would employ a professional third party with all plausible deniabiity built in. Seeing that kid not hiding behind a tree was embarrassing enough; hearing how he left a perfect audit trail to his hotel after he ran away as well is worse. He might as well have used a club credit card to pay his hotel bill. In context I don't think the crime was that serious, when every club is tapping up players illegally through agents, placing stories to unsettle a target, practicing simulated trips in their training sessions, insensing fans after a goal with provocative gestures that incite violence between fans after the game, time wasting........ they all do it. Southampton crime was not so much to have cheated , it was to be so inept when they cheated. [Post edited 21 May 11:01]

Heard this a amillion times before and yet still it gets lapped up as though Saints are a goal up before the game starts. YEs they may be tired, No he isn't worried about his team anymore than Tonda Eckert is worried about his tean, but he will say things to make the opposition fans and players complacent about the game before it starts. Whatever happens tomorrow you won't notice "Squad Fatigue" whatever that is. |

You overrate yourself Nick. You either care or you don't care - you don't "quite care" or "care more". In his case even apart from his professional pride as a footballer Stephens cares because his family are settled here and for him providing stability for his kids at school and his wife and her own job and social circle for as long as possible is a better motivation for caring than sitting in the stand screaming at him. He also cares because if he doesn't give 100% he is dropped and then he is out on his ear and the disruption to his family starts all over again. You can decide every week whether to watch the game or not. Does that suggest you "care more" than him? You seem to have decided after month one whether you rated him or not and now you cannot be seen to change your mind or acknowledge how he is playing today. |

On the basis of using it oncce in your life you'd like it to be there all the time. Reading the rest of these comments you can see immediately why this service should just be allowed to fade into memory. There isn;t one person here who has suggested they use it regularly, or even would use it regularly if it came back, and using it for a home game every two weeks does not count as "regular travel". Most of the people would sooner talk about Tommy Cooper anyway so it answers your own point obliquely Nick . This reminds me of people who lament the passing of the milkman in his milk float while buying all their milk in Tesco. |

I'm not sure why you have picked on a minor bit of flummery rather than continue the important topic thread you introdued yourself. It seems there are approx 4.5 million people in the UK with indefinite leave to remain and There are approx 265,000 non European Nationals working for the NHS of whom around 175,000 come from Asia or Africa. As far as I know, Reform are not advocating a mass deportation of all foreign nationals, but rather a selective checking of those who arrived with work visas (who are not in scope of any deportation plan) and those who just arrived via "other means" ie hiding on trucks, freight trains or boats. They propose other checks around people with spurious claims, failed asylum claims, or remaining in the UK beyond the expiry of a visa. Two morals for 901 to consider - firstly, a selective removal of people with no right to be here is going to have a very minor impact on the Healthcare sector. Secondly, stop pretending that Reform are proposing to remove everyone from an ethinic minority, which is nonsense. I'm not a Reform Supporter and agree with what others are saying about them, but when you invent their policies rather than quoting them accurately you aren't going to win any arguments. |

The "Working Class" are just people with the same failings and weaknesses as any other artificial social demarcation - I don't subscribe to this salt of the earth patronage any more than I would define working class membership in terms of things like a cor blimey accent or dress, like a Harry Enfield parody of a Kwik FIt Fitter. FOr what it's worth Angela Rayner was guilty of naiively hoping that keeping low or a week would allow things to blow over. She's not a criminal, and she isn't so stupid as to imagine she could get away with underpaying tax. It's clear that she did receive advice from somebody and those who gave it are now running and hiding like cowards, lest they pick up any of the odure rebounding off the VentAxia. Her mistake was not to get unequivocal professional advice in writing. Every politician knows sthat every action they take will be subject to minute scrutiny, Rayner especially - they may be foolish, miscalculating or even stupid but wilfully fraudulent? No. |

Stop thinking of "millionaires" or "the rich" as one group. You need to think about what is meant by "rich". Someone can own a painting worth millions and not have a penny to feed themselves. So sell the painting then, you say. Now imagine that instead of a painting it's a farm. where you have sweated all your life to keep it going, working 7 days a week, yet you can't pay the bills. And when you die, instead of it passing to your son to keep going, you have to sell it to pay "inheritcance tax", because you are a "millionaire" apparently. yet the son according to Labour and to you, is a "Millionaire", just the same a James Dyson, but can't afford a new T V or a holiday let alone the time to take one. Did you make the value of your land rise astonomically? Or was it Tesco down the road getting planning permission to build a new superstore? Should you be forced to sell an asset because of what somebody else did rather than yourself? Your second sentence makes the crazy assumption that without actually knowing anything at all about the people in boats, they must all be telling the truth - because they are in a boat rather than going through immigration.. A bit counter intuitive don't you think? Isn't it funny how many of them claiming to be kurds or Iraqis can actually speak only Albanian? But still, according to your logic because they are sat in a rubber boat they must be kurds or Iraqis, and they must be innocent victims, not economic opportunists with a load of money. Oh yes, and you must also believe that they are more deserving than the ones left behind in Iraq or wherever because they had $10000 in cash to pay the people smuggler. I don't miss points, I just clarify them. FOr instance, with recent immigration at just under 700,000 pa, is your solution to the Health and Care sector shortages a sustained immigration rate that will see a further3.5 million immigrants by 2030? do you imagine 3.5 million vacancies in these sectors? For comparison the entire NHS currently employs around 1.2 million including contract staff and an uptake last year of just 38,000, so tell us what happens to the (over) 3 million "spares"? Are you going to address the issue or not? By your own admission you don't believe in fair taxation, just a system that you don't have to pay any more towards - just get those already paying far more than you to pay even more again and you don't even break sweat. Laughable unworkable, impactical hypocritical Corbynistic bollocks. |
