Joel Piroe is our best finisher since.....?
at 09:55 21 Oct 2021

McBurnie?
Ayew?
Bony?
Michu?
Sinclair?
Scotland?
Who cares?

Piroe going through on goal gives me the strangest of things for a Swansea City fan - confidence. The guy misses chances of course. But he doesn't LOOK LIKE he's going to miss. He's an absolute killer when he gets near goal. His all round game is decent and at 22yo, clearly he'll improve substantially. For me he's arguably the best finisher in the league (obv Mitrovic, Grant etc would have stronger claims but I think Piroe's conversion rate is higher). If we don't go up this season I'd be astonished if he's still with us next season. It's not as if we create many chances; he's often starved of the ball so can look anonymous at times. But he seems to have that patience and single-mindedness that great strikers require and he's not a poacher - he can make something out of nothing (like the Bristol City goal). Have to say that I'm rarely impressed with our strikers. But I make an exception with him because I can see he's going to be top drawer and play for Holland in the future. Helluva buy, hats off to our recruitment team on this one.

SSN saying we had a loan deal in place. But Yarmolenko has gotten injured in training so Dortmund won't now let him go.
Would have been a cracking signing...........

Anyone hear the interviews with Swans fans on RW pre-match?
at 18:33 30 Dec 2017

The 3rd one was with some older guy and I nearly crashed my car listening to it. Comedy gold but he actually talked some sense.
He said "Guidolin? Honestly where did Jenkins get him from? The chip shop?!!"

On our attack....
" Well we are that clueless in attack you may as well have a game yourself mate!"

3-5-2 Next Season
at 00:03 6 Feb 2017

I wonder if Clement may go down this route (or a variation of)?
I can understand why this hasn't been tried yet - we probably just don't have a reliable enough RWB/too much upheaval etc.
Fabianski
Sweeper (Amat or new player)
Fernandez Mawson
New RWB/Narsingh Cork Fer Carroll Olsson
Sigurdsson Llorente

Amat would be far better as one of 3 at the back. Marking is his problem but he has pace and can distribute well. Mawson & FF are both strong at marking. Olsson i think has the attributes to play wing back. Perhaps Narsingh does too?

The midfield would change from time to time but i wouldn't be unhappy with that 3 based on what we;ve seen recently. Llorente would benefit from having Siggy up further forward. Or maybe Llorente would be back up if we spend properly on a quick CF or better still Ayew comes good.

Some of the wingers would need to go plus some defenders and CMs plus Borja. Ideally sell Naughton, Gomis, Ki, Borja, Montero and Routledge. That could bring in £17-25m. Emnes also gone. Keep Dyer, Rangel, Britton, Fulton, McBurnie. Bartley plus the youngsters. Plus Ayew & Nordfeldt. I'd keep Barrow as well possibly

That's 19-20 plus youngsters plus sign 1 or 2 quality players - CB, RWB priorities plus a striker.

That's if we stay up of course....

Go 3-5-2 - it's our best chance
at 23:05 5 Dec 2016

Why? Because as Toshack famously said...."if you haven't got 2 that are good enough, play 3."
None of ours are upto much. Our FBs are gash as FBs. Play Kingsley as LWB and Routlegde on the right or maybe Naughton. Perm 3 from the CBs , drop deep and just play on the counter. We need Siggy and Fer in the team and Llorente/Baston or we can't score goals.

Chelsea (with far better players obviously) had a problem, switched to this and are top now, winning every game since going 3-5-2. It's worth a try and I think it would suit us and confuse the oppositions for a while.

Our continuing world-wide appeal - remarkable!
at 21:34 17 Jan 2016

I've always thought that we perhaps underestimate just how popular we are around the world these last few years. I was just having a butcher's a my FPL team and noticing that although I'm in the top third in the world out of 3,600,00+ players I saw that I'm in, what seems to be, a pretty rubbish 3,276 place amongst Swans fans. Then i had a look at the Swans fan league and was pretty astonished at what I saw. Of the Top 32 players in that league, there are no fewer than THIRTEEN different nationalities. I'm amazed at this. Here's the full list of those top 32 Swans fans' nationalities:
Wales - 9 players
England - 7
USA - 4
Norway - 3
Thailand - 1
Slovenia - 1
Croatia - 1
Poland - 1
Turkmenistan - 1
Switzerland - 1
Sweden - 1
Malaysia - 1
Vietnam - 1

Anyone else surprised at the apparent range of our fan-base??

The Problem with this site these days
at 22:18 17 Dec 2015

Exhibit A - Darran starts a thread slaughtering the Secret Footballer (a respected insider within football who is presumably impartial to the Swans) for posting a blog which he thinks is bo**ocks and unnecessarily undermines the Club. His opinion so fair enough I say.

Exhibit B - Darran starts a thread about a rumour to do with a player , a Board member and God knows who else which , er, unnecessarily undermines the Club.

Some have rightly pointed out the problem here. Worryingly, most haven't.

Team for Saturday
at 23:00 9 Dec 2015

Fabianski
Rangel Fede Ash Taylor

Leon
Shelvey Cork
Siggy
Ayew Emnes

That side lacks a bit of pace I know. But plenty of nous and we'll need to graft and show discipline and shape and for these reasons I'd bench Bartley (hopeless), Naughton (out of sorts), Ki ( looks knackered), Montero (doesn't particularly suit the diamond), Routledge (terrible), Gomis (out of sorts).

Why the diamond ? Its worked well against the bigger sides, especially away...will protect the back 4 better. Might surprise Man City a little.
Why bring back Rangel + Fede + Cork + Shelvey - because whilst none have been outstanding this season, we KNOW, they are good enough.
Emnes? Criminally under-utilsed by Monk....but has pace, trickery and plays well in a 2 up front system.
Subs: Nordfeldt; Amat, Naughton, Grimes, Barrow, Montero, Gomis

This won't happen of course, more's the pity. Just want to see something different on Saturday that can graft it's way to a point or 3,.

Team for Villa
at 00:09 20 Oct 2015

Don't want to dwell on tonight but there are a few under-performers of late not just tonight and I hope Monk kicks some arses by dropping a few Saturday:
Fabianski
Rangel - deserves to stay in (just)
Taylor - see above
Fernandez - possibly Amat could be given a go but I would persevere with Fede for now
Williams - undroppable
Ki - I'm not really sure how he's ended up out of the side but he should return -sharpish!
Cork - Not the problem IMO. Bad mistake tonight for the goal but is busy.
Siggurdson - Had a breather. But get him back in as he's reliable and hardworking.
Barrow - showed enough tonight to be given another go
Montero - should get more joy Saturday than against Johnson
Eder - Has shown little but Gomis, like Ayew needs to go and think about his game.
Dropped
Gomis- showed willing but the need for so many touches and his refusal to play simple balls kills many of our attacks.
Ayew - horrendous tonight and goals aside has not offered enough of late. Looked unfit tonight.
JJS - Played ok tonight. But his general performance levels aren't where they were a few weeks ago. Would benefit by a short spell on the bench IMO.

Is Saturday the Biggest Ever Day in Welsh Sporting History?
at 23:32 8 Oct 2015

With much riding on the outcome of the Australia v Wales RWC clash followed by the chance for Wales to finnally qualify for a major Football Championship, Euro '16, is this the biggest EVER sporting day???!!

The Contenders:

!) Brazil v Wales , WORLD CUP QF , Gothenburg, 19/06/58
Wales , having drawn all 3 games in the Group stage would not have qualified had goal difference been a criteria. Instead they had a play-off aginst 1954- RunnerS-up Hungary and prevailed 2-1 coming from behind with goals from Ivor Allchurch and Terry Medwin

In the QF, without tailsman John Charles, they pushed Brazil hard but were beaten by Pele's debut WC goal in the 66th minute in front of 26,000 in the Ullevi Stadium.

2) FA Cup Final Cardiff City v Arsenal , 23/04/1927 , Wembley Stadium
This was the first ever Cup Final to be broadcast on radio by the BBC . Cardiff won 1-0 with a goal by Hughie Ferguson in the 74th minute. In front of over 91,000, The Cup was " let out of England" as it was known for the first and this far, only time as a nation rejoiced back in Wales.

3) France v Wales, Rugby World Cup Semi-Final, 15/11/11, Eden Park, Auckland
Wales , on an excellent run of form, reached their first SF for 24 years by convincingly beating Ireland 22-10 in the QF one week prior to this and were favourites to reach a first ever Final. But Captain Sam Warburton was controversially sent off after 19mins and despite scoring the only try of the match through Mike Phillips, late on, Stephen Jones missed the conversion and 14-man Wales could not quite force a score despite a grandstand finish. Final score Wales 8-9 France in front of 58,000.

4) Swansea City v Reading , Championship Play-off Final, 30/05/11, Wembley Stadium

In front of over 85,000 expectant supporters, Swansea played their biggest ever match, a game estimated to be worth upto £100m in revenue to the winners for a place in the Premier League. Swansea stormed out of the blocks and were, incredibley, 3-0 to the good by half-time thanks to 2 goals by winger Scott Sinclair and a third by Scotsman, Stephen Dobbie. Reading fought back valiantly in the 2nd half and with 30mins to go the game was back in the balance at 3-2. But a second penalty for Swansea saw Sinclair complete his hat-trick and Wales had a Premier League team for the first time ever.

Thoughts? Any other contenders?

Our record versus Cardiff.....the eternal debate
at 16:56 21 Apr 2015

Someone on FB posted a link that 31yrs ago today we beat Cardiff 3-2 in a Division 2 relegation battle which just happened to be on Easter Saturday in front of 10,275 (yeah right!) at the Vetch. I was born in 1971 and have always been baffled by Cardiff fans' claims to be the bigger/better club. In my entire lifetime they have had , perhaps two periods (1970s and 2003-10) where they were continuously more successful than us ......and , er, that's it!
So the other 30 odd years they've either been as good or often, worse, hence my bemusement at their claims over the years.
I thought I'd look up the records as I "feel" like we've usually got the better of them in head-to-heads. Since they thumped us 5-0 in 1965 (hats off), we then didn't play them until 1980 (excluding Welsh Cups) . 1980- to date, this is our record in all comps:
P 45 W 19 D 13 L 13 F 59 A 45
Not even much doubt is there really.....that's the last 50yrs worth of H-2-Hs!!

Orlando City v. NYC - MLS match just now on SS3
at 23:14 8 Mar 2015

Anyone else just watch this? I thoroughly enjoyed it. Kaka scored a last minute equaliser for 10 man Orlando. David Villa captained NYC.
These are both brand new teams. Yet there were 63,000 there!! The place went bonkers when Kaka equalised. You get the impression it's really taking off over there now.

Now Sporting Kansas v. NY Red Bulls spearheaded by Bradley Wright-Phillips. Looks another huge crowd in situ.
