We have definitely proved against West Ham and Swansea that we can compete with the pace-setters. But we have also shown against Birmingham that if we let these standards slip we get done over. Impossible to maintain impeccable standards all season so we will lose several games this year - it’s how we react to a defeat that matters. No complaints on that score last Saturday. |

Another thing I noticed after watching the highlights (again) was that after his 2nd goal, Kolli was pulling him aggressively by the neck of his shirt (by way of celebration) but JD was completely blanking him while he waited for other players to congratulate him - interesting. |

It seemed to be a bit of a panic buy at the time, a stop gap to fill Burrell’s long term injury. Remember at the time we were still well in the play-off picture and the Burrell/Kone relationship was very effective. For whatever reason reason it never happened, whether he genuinely picked up an injury before kicking a ball for us, or JS took a look at him in training and realised he wasn’t good enough (yet) for the Championship we don’t know. Silence and vaacumes always lead to conspiracy theories, even more so now on-line.
IF we get our injured attacking players back - Chair, Burrell, Lloyd - and he is not getting a game when they are out , it does seem wise to loan him out in January to get him some minutes under his belt. On a human level, I feel sorry for the lad.
Ironically, if JS had played Smyth in that Burrell role last year, he would never had needed to buy Obikwu in the first place. Not blaming the manager for this at all, he clearly knows his playing staff a lot better now than ten months ago. |

Its a good point Antti. I think we followed our demolition of Leicester with a barely deserved draw at Portsmouth. The 'standards' test now is to 'give Southampton a game' - the result matters less than the performance. On the flip side, our response to what was our worst performance of the season at Birmingham was absolutely outstanding.

Well that’s a given. The report enhances any game I see on the box which is nice. But it’s the games I don’t get to see at all that come to life when I read the report. |

If the last two matches have taught us anything it’s that JS is not the worst manager in the history of Association Football nor is he the greatest. He is an honest, intelligent, hard-working manager who has grown into the job and gets it right more often than not. Of course when his team deliver a performance like yesterday, it rather creates a rod for JS’s back, because it rather negates the struggles of our ‘injury ravaged squad’ Speaking of which, imagine Chair instead of Vale and Burrell/Smyth or Poku/Smyth and there is plenty to be optimistic about. The trick as JS himself would say is to stay humble and not go intro extremes of depression or elation.
One thing that concerns me, am I right in thinking that yesterday was the first game JCS missed that wasn’t pre-planned? Worrying if so. |

I have defended Kone enough times on here over the past few weeks to feel comfortable saying ‘I told you so’ without being accused of using the benefit of hindsight. Kone is a quality Championship striker, who has gone through a rough time with loss of form and injury. What I couldn’t understand was the vitriol and abuse he was taking on here (and this is a generally ‘mature’ and ‘measured’’’ fan base so god only knows what was on Twitter) considering how well he performed last year. He was clearly a Championship standard player last season, so that was not going to suddenly disappear just because he was carrying a series of injuries and couldn’t buy a goal. If he’d had this game against Bolton when he could easily have had a hat trick then his season might be very different to date. I am delighted for Kone, as it is fully deserved. Funny how things work out - if Madsen had being on the pitch it is highly unlikely that Kone would have taken the pen even though he was on a hat-trick.
But my main point is to offer a word of caution about being too quick to write players off. One thing if they are ‘bad uns’ like Barton or never measured up like Celar , but Kone HAD proved himself to be a top notch Champ player. So why not give him time to rediscover his form, rather than dismissing him as not good enough. |

We tried this twice in the recent past under Warburton and Beale. We crashed and burned each time, taking 2 or 3 years to recover. In fact this is one of the reasons why we recruit players with poor injury records. Apart from Eze we haven’t made any significant sales over the past ten years. We have had opportunities, Austin, BOS, Willock to name three, but each time either held onto the player too long in a futile attempt to reach the prem or allowed their contract to run out, before attempting to renew. As a result we have been hamstrung in our recruitment and this has been exacerbated by what looks like from the outside looking in, as poor medical strategies. |

Funny how things work out. Adamson must have viewed the arrival of Lamptey with some trepidation, but now it looks like he may be the main RB for the season. Best wishes to mad Ben. |
