The entry was fine but there were a lot of angry people exiting Pearl St last night & it’s farcical to make you go all the way to that end just to walk back anyway. It actually made it worse as by the time Scunthorpe fans had applauded their team they were all piling out just as we’d got to Willbutts Lane when ordinarily we’d have long cleared it. |

Yep it’s absolute nonsense closing exits, those stands have been there nearly 30 years & we’ve dealt with League 1 crowds with very few issues. Just keep away fans back 10 minutes if they’re that concerned, much more sense than this barrier rubbish. |

What I am enjoying at the moment is how calm the team looks. We look in control of every aspect of the game & that's resulting in the opposition having very little opportunity to score goals against us. I think the crowd is now starting to appreciate that calmness as there seems to be a more accepting nature to "recycling" the ball & the patient way we build attacks. In the league we have only conceded one equalising goal all season which is astonishing, that was at Morecambe & we have dropped 0 points when leading. |

Edit: Meant to quote samueloneils Rodney & Smith don't play as a 9 though. That's Mani D's position unless he gets injured again. If he doesn't get injured then it will be him starting & replaced by Duku/Hendo. Rodney & Smith are competing along side our plethora of 10's where we still have Barlow, McBride, Burger, Pritchard, Allarakhia & if he's ever fit Gomez-Mancini. Just don't think we need another forward player at the moment unless an obvious improvement comes along or there are further injuries. [Post edited 26 Jan 11:55]

I'm not too concerned by the forward line to be honest if Duku isn't injured as well. If Mani D is now back then he starts every game to be replaced by either Henderson or Duku. Smith, apart from the failed attempt v Hartlepool has been playing as one of the "10's" & we have plenty of options there, especially if Barlow is now going to start making an impact, hopefully he will. Don't think we've room for another 9 in the match day squad. |

Yes we’ve got covered seats on both sides & the covered terrace. Doubt the uncovered end will be open, looks like Hartlepool are down the side too. |

Highlights just how important it is to get back into the EFL & it's probably worth the calculated gamble at this point in making sure we strengthen the squad every time it's needed because getting stuck down here long term means a non sustainable loss making business. |

I think because of our games in hand & the fact we are being chased so closely at the moment it's gone under the radar a bit just how good our form has been. 16 wins from 20 games is absolutely ridiculous & we are trending for a record breaking season, still on target for about 112 points! End of Jan/February is massive for a few of the top teams, Forest Green also have Scunthorpe,York, Carlisle & Boreham Wood aside from ourselves & York have Southend, Carlisle, Forest Green & Scunthorpe. It's really unusual how it seems the top 7 are all playing each other at the same time. We've had a couple of months of everyone playing the rest of the league. I think if we come through February with a decent points total the league will start opening up at that point & we'll have a much clearer picture. |

I'm not saying you are wrong but in the interests of balance I'm going to throw my (very) unpopular opinion into the mix. That COVID season means absolutely nothing to me. There's a very long read study (link below) outlining the effects of no crowds that season. Across all European leagues home wins, shots, shots no target, tackles, bookings, all decreased dramatically for home teams. It's fair to say that there was probably zero chance that with a crowd we go 18 home games without a win. And certainly Liverpool do not lose 6 consecutive games at Anfield with a crowd. That season should never have happened in my opinion, it was a travesty & threw up all manner of oddities that have never been seen before or since. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/a Apart from that the two cup games against Man United & Newcastle are up there with my favourite moments as a Dale fan & the survival at the end of the 18/19 season was unexpected & enjoyable. I would certainly have preferred him to have stayed on than end up with Robbie Stockdale & Jim Bentley! |

We will always be near the top of the fair play league as we are a possession based team that likes to control matches. The only bookings you’d expect us to pick up regularly are stopping breakaway attacks. Doesn’t mean we are soft, just that we’re dominating the ball, and you can’t give fouls away if you’ve got control of the ball! |

I doubt Hartlepool would give up a bank holiday Monday home game at Easter for a Tuesday night in December. |

Looking at those Altrincham & Halifax attendance numbers that would seem like around 1,000 season ticket holders per match didn't show up as you'd imagine the majority of people who actually purchased a ticket for the individual match turned up. |

Generally haven’t done with McNulty since we got relegated to the National League. Get the odd player interview. |

I would be dead against moving now, I don't think we're anywhere near that stage & it would write the season off. Playing somewhere else probably in front of 1,200 fans would just be a disaster, never mind all the other logistical issues with it. We've only 5 scheduled home games until the end of January. Even if they were all called off then there are still 12 available Tuesday's until the end of the season. Obviously there's the possibility of FA Trophy causing a few more & any potential away postponements but we can talk about playing elsewhere in March if it's come to that. |

Absolutely, I also remember the mood after we lost at home to Bury twice in 3 days and then lost 5 home games on the bounce without scoring in 4 of them in 07/08. Hill being the "cheap option" It takes time to build a team that can get over the line, it took Hill 3 years. If we're saying that 4th isn't good enough with the 4th best scoring record & 4th best defensive record & 4th best home record we are setting a high bar for any manager. And there's no difference between 4th with McNulty or 4th with any other manager. They will still have their deficiencies, still lose a similar amount of games & probably in a similarly frustrating fashion. |

Gutted yes, especially being 3-1 up so late on but still optimistic for the future. A good improvement on last season & with a good core already tied down for next year we can improve in specific areas. In general our recruitment was good. If we can get a permanent keeper in, get a few proven 25-30 year old pros in I see no reason why we won't improve again. I see no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet. |

Just had the club email saying just short of 4,000 home tickets now sold. Should get to around 4,200 then hopefully by kick off. 1,300 Southend fans should make it around 5,467 I would say. After all the discussion of marketing etc I have to say the clubs social media has been very pro active & heavily pushing this game, I think that's a pretty good effort given the slow start. There's been a £9.99 for the month offer on, I bought it before the Braintree game which will cover all the play off games including the final, think there's a few days left on the offer yet. |
 | Forum Reply | Southend (H) at 15:07 8 May 2025
I think the fact that whilst this is a massive game for us, for the casual observer it is essentially a quarter final. There's no Wembley place decided on this game which will reduce interest from casuals. Think we only got around 4,500 against Gillingham in our last play off home game in 2009 which was also on a Thursday night. Hope It's more but I think anything over 4,000 will be a decent effort. |

Been a good read this, I’m where fitzochris is at. When I read things about Leeds potentially sacking the manager who has just got them promoted breaking all sorts of club records in the process I just can’t get my head around it. I’ve read the Leeds forum & there is talk that they are boring, despite having scored 25 goals more than every other team in the division & completely dominating. Where has the joy gone? I really believe there’s a crisis in football in this country now, crowds up & down the country just don’t like the game anymore. It’s more organised, less chaotic & to some degree that makes it less exciting. The football is now undoubtedly better technically than it was 20 years ago but I’m not sure it’s what English fans enjoy watching & I think that is ultimately the real issue. McNulty or some other manager, I just don’t think a lot of people will find what they are looking for anymore. |
