We do now have a lot of very good championship level players, and a few more coming back from season-long loans in the summer. How many are PL ready if we go up? Alcaraz was one and maybe the Man City imports will all be OK. I don’t see much else… We are likely to see a Nottingham Forest style summer me thinks, with a dozen leaving and as many arriving. Could be like thst even if we don’t go up. |

I think there’s a sell on clause so if we sold for £50m City would get maybe £10m of that, so keeping him a year and earning 40 next year and keeping goodwill with City would be the best option. We could get their next wizzkid in exchange maybe too.
Same thing with Tino, let Chelsea have him back when they want him and not antagonise them by selling the player to a rival. |

You banged on last year about nothing will happen until July 1st when bonuses (note no apostrophe) are paid. This is incorrect. Plenty of transfers are being announced with contracts signed now. Just like any other contract, such as buying a house, the contract can be agreed and signed at any time. For various reasons such as the bonuses you mention the contract might be dated July 1st but there is no need for clubs to sit on their hands and wait until July 1st to do business. |

I think Nick came very close then to agreeing that we have four decent centrebacks (not including Stevens, Bednarek still on the books or the Tranmere loanee I can’t remember his name for the moment and any kids on the way up.) That’s progress in itself!
Ralph got unlucky with KWP’s injury just before a game with Arsenal. I’m sure Maitland-Niles was signed in part to provide cover at right back. At least he can now play there until Livramento or KWP are fit again. |

It can’t be a Brendan who would want to build his own team, it could be a Cooper who is a renowned coach. Cooper would be told to work with what he’s got which may or may not be an upgrade on Ralph. The 23 player influx at Forest was never going to work and hopefully Cooper wasn’t the man behind it. I don’t think Ralph will get sacked this side of the World Cup because the quality of the players he has is plain to see so he has earned some patience.
In the bad old days I always used to look at the PL and reassure myself that there were always three worse teams than Saints. Maybe that’s the call now and get in a striker and be well set for next season. Livramento and Romeo back soon too don’t forget. |

I wrote weeks ago that avoiding relegation was the only aim this season to give this young side a year to mature. Add Livramento to this squad, get Romeo back playing, and we are only a striker away from being a very exciting team indeed. I think the squad is brilliant, better than anyone else’s outside the top six or so. Does Ralph get credit for this, or is it board/owners/recruitment staff? Whichever, it’s hard not to see Ralph’s fingerprints on it somewhere. The huge amount spent in the summer has to have been spent with his coaching in mind. What if we fire him and the next guy wants to do things differently? That surely would be going backwards. |

There is one inherent risk in this policy which you have analysed well Nick, and that is that patience is required in year 1. What if we flirt with relegation while the younger players get up to speed? You would think that this current selection plus Livramento would be very successful in years to come but they have to be good enough to stay up first!
I’m obviously in a negative mood this morning because my second thought of the day is do we need to balance the books in January or next summer? Is AMN being groomed to be the new JWP if we sell him to pay for everyone else? I don’t see how else he fits into our current thinking… |

A word of appreciation for the club’s business plan? Saturday’s goalkeeper and back four but with Livramento at RB and KWP at LB looks like the first choice going forwards. Every one of them young and worth now (after just four games) at least twice what we paid for them. Lavia and JWP in front of them, both worth how much do you think? Sadly, no room for Nick’s choice of West Ham’s Dawson (or any other Dawson, including Les). If we are able to add one more striker to Mara then we have followed the business plan right through the first choice team improving the squad on the field and in value all the way through. That leaves maybe five previously first teamers on the bench to add a strength we have never had before.
