Saints V Newcastle United The Verdict
at 13:13:35

The inclusion of Valery at full back was a strange decision. I take it that none of Saints backroom staff watched Newcastle mid week and noticed Saint-Maximin had a cracking game. Putting a young, lightweight player who had not played first team football since last year up against such a strong winger was asking for trouble. JWP should have been at full back with Valery in right mid field where it seems he always plays better . Late on we were lucky not to concede another goal with an almost the identical situation between the two players that had led to the goal. I also think it is a bit harsh to come down on the CBs (again). I thought they did a good job keeping Newcastle at bay in the second half and we could have nicked a win if our forwards could do a bit better in front of goal.

Saints At Liverpool The Verdict
at 13:38:46

A bit harsh on our CBs. Liverpool attacked with real pace and were getting numbers in the box in the second half. No other team in the Premiership could have done any better than Saints against the World Team Champions. That said, we gave them a real game in the first half and had we got a penalty for the trip on Ings two minutes into the second, who knows was might have happened? Certainly not the first Liverpool goal. The way we have been playing for the last couple of months and the way we matched Liverpool for much of the game means we can look forward to the rest of the season with real optimism for the first time in three seasons, knowing that in the remaining fixtures, we are capable of winning them all. It was also a nice gesture from the Liverpool fans to applaud Danny Ings when he was substituted. Whether it was relief from not having an ex player score against them or a genuine regard for him, I don't know.

Saints At Crystal Palace The Verdict
at 01:58:30

A really good result, especially only three days after the Wolves game. It does show that we now have a team that can come back strongly from a setback. The stats say it all. We had most of the possession and Palace didn't have a shot on target, nor did they win a corner. If only our home form was as good as our away form, we would be sitting in 5th place today. Conversely, if the reverse was true, we would be well and truly in the relegation zone.

Hasenhuttl Admits There Is No Need To Panic Buy Now !
at 12:22:00

I think the phrase "no panic buying" is the most relevant. The last couple of seasons there have been transfers in during January that have left us with bigger wage bill and nothing on the field to show for it. Leicester are rumoured to be after Bertrand so perhaps that is why RH only seems concerned with cover for that position. .

Legendary Saints Goalscorer George O'Brien Is Still With Us
at 13:30:11

A great player who I had the pleasure of watching many times in the 60s. It was also the era when players were far more approachable than they are now and like many of his team mates, George O'Brien signed my programme as he was making his way into the Dell before a match.

Will Saints Spend £35 Million In January Transfer Window ?
at 15:35:24

I agree that defence is not now such a priority. 20 million wasted on yet another CB does not get me excited. A decent left/ right back and cover for PH and JWP in midfield is as far as I'd go. Our two CBs now are gaining in confidence and playing together well. Why buy another CB who will need time to bed in and whose introduction to an established team could be disastrous as many teams have found out to their cost in the past.

No Class Mourinho
at 13:10:26

Today's BBC football website says it all. Mourinho, Mourinho, Mourinho. Not a word about Saints. I'm just glad that the board kept faith with RH after Leicester and not replace him with JM. We would probably now be be propping up the Premiership. As it is, hopefully we will be pass Spurs on the way up as they go down the table.

Saints V Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict

Brilliant win though I agree Jack Stephens also deserved the the plaudits for the goal with a peach of a pass. Our form over the Christmas period is the best in the Premiership except for our ex players on the Mersey. Based on this performance, we can do really well this season, a season which up to only a few games ago looked like being another dog fight for Premiership survival. My only gripe, we played well enough to have at least a couple more goals.

Saints V West Ham United The Verdict
at 16:33:13

A good article, most of which I agree with except the defence being solely blamed for the goal. The goal came about when PEH miss passed to a WHU player and then for good measure fouled the player getting a deserved booking. From the resulting free kick they scored,. This episode just about summed up the whole match.

Saints At Newcastle United The Verdict
at 13:20:42

We have spent £35 million on two central defenders, one of whom is on loan and the other can barely get a place on the bench, yet Jack Stephens, an academy player, is the managers choice. We might as well saved our money and bought a decent forward who could put the ball in the net, unlike Adams, Long, Ofremi, Redmond etc with one goal between them so far this season. Goals win matches and if you miss chances like at Arsenal and Newcastle then you end up in the position we have been in so often in this and the past three seasons of desperately defending single goal leads then losing/drawing in the final minutes. There is enormous pressure on defenders in this situation especially if they subjected to it week in, week out and it no wonder they have "lapses of concentration." Yet our forwards can miss numerous chances and nothing is said or as happened with Long when he went most of last season without scoring, got praised in an Ugly Inside article for his work rate! Double standards?

Saints At Arsenal The Verdict
at 12:06:46

The seven minutes of extra time and the late late goal would have been of no consequence had Saints only converted one of three golden opportunities to score we had after the penalty. That said, with matches of the past few seasons we sat back on numerous occasions with a one goal leads and all too often suffered late winning goals from the opposition. Yesterday we did not. Attack is the best form of defence and we had it in bucket loads. The stats speak for themselves, 21 shots against 12 for Arsenal, done with only 39% procession. If we continue playing with the attitude and commitment we have showed against Arsenal, (a team backed by a certain ex Liverpool pundit to win easily against Saints by at least 2-0), we will finish at the very least, mid table.

Saints At Everton The Verdict
at 14:47:42

Interesting that the defence get most of the blame. There were 24 shots by Everton on goal, but only four on target,. Funnily enough, this was exactly the same stats as against Man City when Saints were lauded for their dogged defending. Our own attempts on goal were also the same in both matches, four, with three on target and that is a problem just as great as our poor old battered defenders. Only one other team has scored less in the Premiership than ourselves and so. you can have two defenders the quality of Fonte and Van Dijke but if you ain't scoring, you ain't winning. So what is to be done. If Stephens is not good enough put him in the team as attacking midfielder. He seems to be the only player in the team willing and capable of making a telling forward pass. RH might also give some thought to bringing Mo E back from Celtic where he has scored 7 goals in ten appearances and was responsible for the peach of a pass that lead to Celtic's last gasp winner in the Europa League last week. Those suggestions will never happen, but if we continue the way we are then Championship football beckons.

Saints Are Like Brexit ! No One Truly Understands The Issues
at 13:34:59

Interesting you make no distinction between club and team performances. No matter what goes on behind the scenes in a bad club the team can still play well. Look at Bury last season. Run into the ground by the owner, with players not paid yet the team despite that, got promotion and a place the EFL semi final. Our problem has been uninspiring managers under whom the halcyon days of Pochettino and Koeman have gradually faded away. Yes we sold our top players, but the pressing game of Poch or Koeman never giving an inch of space to opponents has disappeared. The attitude now of players is almost one of can't be bothered , culminating in Friday's result. Saints have to now to start again with a root and branch clear out of the team , even if means relegation this season. In the long run that has to be better than what has been witnessed over the past four seasons.

Saints V Leicester City The Preview
at 13:49:12

The 16 goals Leicester have scored this season is better than all but three teams in the Premiership and 7 more than Saints. Given our defensive woes this and the past few seasons, I would be very grateful for just a point. However, I am more pessimistic about us winning/drawing this game than any other I remember for some time. I just hope that Saints can spring one of their historic surprise results on us.

The Worst Defence In The Premier League !
at 18:01:46

In the past I have felt that some criticism of our defenders was unjustified, but season after season the situation has just got worse. Too often our CB's are like rabbits caught in car headlights, frozen to the spot when any opposition forward makes a run straight for them. What confidence has just melted away. No wonder we are top of the Premiership table for giving away leading positions in a game. We must buy a decent CB in January or we could find ourselves scrapping for survival for the rest of the season. I would also suggest, in a week where Tyrone Mings was rightly lauded for his defensive and leadership qualities on his England debut, Saints management have closer look at who we let go at 16, especially central defenders because we have not had a decent one playing for us for many years.

I do agree that RH could do with a good right hand man. Even the most successful managers had valued assistants eg Clough/Taylor, Shankley/Paisley, Ferguson/numerous. As has been commented on RH cuts a lonely figure and really does look like needs someone to confide in.

Saints V Chelsea The Verdict
at 14:28:24

Saints were like the curate's egg, good in parts. Unfortunately they were very small parts. Up to the time Chelsea scored we were doing ok, but then heads went down along with commitment. There does need to be a sea change in team selection. JWP, Long Ings and Yoshida out. Boufal, Ofemi , Danso and Djenepo when fit in. Continue with the same team as yesterday and we will be cannon fodder for every other team in the Premiership till we are relegated at the season's end. Our main hope lies with a quick return to fitness of Djenepo, scorer of two goals in our two wins. No coincidence that our downward spiral started when he got injured.

Saints V Manchester United The Verdict
at 11:27:28

Sorry but the above sounds like an excuse for a poor Manchester United showing. Yes, United did not manage to score when we were down to 10 men, but that was down Saints playing with more passion and commitment , not United's lack of it. Matic may "organised" his team when he came on, but they still did not score. I disagree that Saints were disorganized on the field because if we are so bad why in the last three matches have we only conceded three goals against the runaway leaders of the Premiership and European champions and two other teams in the top half of the table. We are defending better than the last few seasons and this game reflected that. If we start scoring more goals, who knows what we could achieve this season.
