There seems to be a common thread through the report and comments for which I holeheartesly agree.. Downes is essential for us to control midfield. Stop trying to shoe-horn Stephens into the team, we have played at our best without him.

Ps. I can't help thinking RM is our new Nigel Adkins, I love his positive attitude, balanced views and he clearly has the players commitment 100%

Some very balanced comments above. A great result and a terrific show of will, togetherness and desire from the team and the manager.

I want to second a comment from above.. we need to tie Stuart Armstrong to another contract, he is such a valuable asset to the team and squad.

Great to see people supporting Gav as apposed to getting on his back. As others have said, he's been quality of late and as such I'd prefer to support him and just mark it down as a silly mistake.

I can't be as forgiving to Shea for his giveaway though, it wasn't the actual giveaway that annoyed me, it was that he made no attempt to chase back and back amends for his mistake.

Southampton At Coventry City The Verdict

Ipswich and Leicester are tearing up the record book, making our position look average. At the half way point last season, the top two were on 45 and 43 and Luton who also got promoted were on 29. Let's keep this real guys, anyone who thought we were going to compete with Leicester this season is deluded, it was always going to be play offs at best so a 13 game unbeaten run and possibly 42 points at the half way stage is totally where the realists amongst us hoped we would be.

Great result after a long week in terms of miles travelled. Really good performance although I can't help thinking we could have killed the game off much earlier if we didn't tippy tap around the box so much in the last 20mins of the first half.

I was really bouyed by the vocal support in the second half when things were getting a bit edgy, the atmosphere died for a while but those who took it upon themselves to start the support should be congratulated as it seemed to spur the team back on rather than having a stadium of jangling nerves.

Back Of The Chapel ! Looking To Ramp Up The Atmosphere At St Mary's

This can only be a good thing. Even this season, there has been times when the atmosphere was lacking and the away support has been more vocal which always disappoints me. I have always questioned the thought process of putting the away fans next to our "most vocal" set of supporters, so to have another area separate to that can only help spread the noise, songs and support.

Southampton Team To Play Middlesbrough Now Out

For Christs sake, we are still paying Ralph, get him back!!!!!!!!!! There is clearly something wrong behind the scenes, I refuse to believe that this group of players are this bad. That said, it would.help if RM played his strongest side from the start and not leave them on the bench.

Dear RM,
1. Shea Charles is not a defender, but looks good as a defensive midfielder.
2. Smallbone looked like a rabbit in headlights and clearly didnt understand where he should be. He definitely isnt a defensive midfielder.
3. Once Bednarek and Stuey came on you could see the difference with some experience on the field.
4. Play Edozie on the left, it suits him better.
5. Get Dean Hammond (who was commentating for the live stream) in as one of your coaches - he talked much more sense and seemed to understand the issues much better than you do.
Thanks and COYR

Southampton V Leicester City The Verdict
at 17:09:41

Whilst I am as disgruntled as everyone else on here and can agree with many points, there is one thing I am hanging onto in the hope this is temporary. We have not yet been afforded a weeks training with this whole squad. Following the unsettling transfer window we then lost the vast majority to international duty and came back to a CD which wasn't first choice. Charles is a great player, but it looks like his strengths are in midfield. Why was TH-B consistently only 10 yards away from Bazunu when GB was trying to play out, it only served to narrow his options and then Leicester were able to intercept. It really was a shocking display but I'm hoping over this next week we start to see a difference, hopefully with Bednarek alongside T H-B, Charles holding midfield and Manning replaced!

I too thought Charles and A Armstrong were standout players. Manning and Stephens two that stood out needing to up their game somewhat.

I agree with much of what has been said about keeping players now, thinking ahead to later in the season, the bench we had yesterday doesn't fill me with confidence.

Well it would see that RM's answer to the defensive issues is Downes, time will tell. I still cannot fathom out how a mistake prone defender can be given the captain's armband and as you say Nick, both Stephens and Bednarek seem to work well together. I am however in favour of Bednarek (even as Captain), but alongside a stronger, less lapsadasicle defender. I am starting to enjoy the way we play, it is also showing Martin has a clear method of approach (unlike jones.and selles) and the players are doing what he is asking of them.

Southampton Can Now Calm Down And Carry On With New Manager Appointment
at 12:34:33

Somewhat underwhelmed but my fingers are crossed that this appointment has something to do with Wilcox and that his track record is merely a result of restricted funds and support from his directors....

Good luck and welcome Russell Martin, it's going to be a tough season.

Ruben Selles ! A Good Man In The Wrong Place At The Wrong Time
at 10:45:22

Can't argue with that. It is time to bring in a new manager who Selles could assist. A new manager who has time to look over his squad as this season fizzles out, make decisions on who he want, who he doesn't and then hit the Championship running.

Plus point.. seeing Stuart Armstrong back in the side where he should be.

I've consistently said it in recent weeks and I'll says it again.. nothing is changing so might as well get a new manager in now, someone who can have some time to see what he has, what he needs to keep, what he needs to get shot of and have time to hit the Championship running.

Southampton V Bournemouth The Verdict
at 13:56:38

Like some others, I do not blame all the players, in fact I feel sorry for the likes of Stuart Armstrong amongst others. The team have been let down by the owners and management which in turn meant some bizarre selections and formations and just like last night, players not seemingly knowing where they should be playing.

Selles seems a nice guy and I am sure his heart is in the right place but I think he is seriously out of his depth. His selection of Adam Armstrong who was invisible during the Arsenal game was questionable to say the least when you have the likes of Stuart Armstrong and Djenepo on the bench. The fact he played JWP knowing he was ill... terrible management. Experienced strikers on the bench but not up front. Another questionable formation decision. All of these at a time when you have to throw the everything including the kitchen sink at staying up.

I would have much preferred to see us going all out to win and end up losing than going down to with the pathetic whimper like we are. I still cannot fathom out how we play so well against the so called big teams but when we play those around us we always look second best.

Now is the time to get in a new manager, one with experience not an experiment, who can start to assess his squad as this damp fart of a season peters out and hopefully then he will know who to retain, who to get rid of and start next season with a bang.

Why on earth can't the team show that level of desire and passion every week? Even JWP said they don't seem to raise their game enough when playing teams around us.

Adam Armstrong might as well have not been on the pitch, I cannot think of anything productive that he did and if he had come off earlier for Suli I may well have taken the pressure off a little. On the flip side, I absolutely love the passion of Lyanco and really hope we keep hold of Alcaraz, he is quite a star of the future.
