True and that’s an encouraging viewpoint.

It’s a bit misleading about Hull because they spent €11 million, €15 million and €31 million in the three seasons before they went up. This was offset by selling a few players for a lot but still meant they had a decent investment of players in their squad. My point as earlier is that it’s not net spend it’s the value of your squad that’s important as it correlates albeit imperfectly with the quality of players. Of course that doesn’t reflect the underlying performance of the club which is a different question for which net spend is much more important.

Yes I agree with everyone injuries are a big issue and will make a huge difference to how we do.

I certainly don’t think all is lost if we’re not in the playoffs now. It’s not exactly what I’m asking though as it’s more about who we SHOULD be better than as that keeps cropping up on the Board.

Be lucky is extremely important and seems to be a challenge!

I don’t think we’ll get a hiding. Swansea have won most of their matches by one or two goals.

I think they will win 2-1 purely because of our injuries. I’m not sure who is going to score or create enough with the players we’ve got left.

Thanks Terry. That’s a very fair list. I also think it shows what we’re up against with only two places left after listing a very likely group of pretty certain clubs for the top 6 as it stands now.

I also largely agree with the five clubs we’re fighting with for the remaining places. I’d possibly just add Stoke because I think they probably have added some quality this season. Having said that they haven’t done particularly well against top half teams overall and have some difficult games on paper in November against West Ham, Millwall and Birmingham so we might know a bit more about them then (not trying to persuade you, just a comment!).

That leaves us with a one in three chance of making the play offs which is about right probably. November will be an important month. We have to keep within touching distance of the playoffs points wise even if we’re not actually in them.

In answer to your points:

a) I don’t remember everything you’ve written and

b) I was asking in general not just posing you the question but you sidetracked it with the things which you wanted to talk about, which is fine but it’s a shame that the original question was a bit lost. I was mainly interested in which teams we thought we should be better than rather than where we should end up. I think that’s a more novel question. If people don’t want to answer it or don’t think it’s relevant/interesting that’s fine but that’s no reason not to pose it.

And again you’ve turned my initial question into a judgement on Nourry and the club’s overall management which I wasn’t asking and once again is your question, not mine and has been done to death. If you’d asked that question I wouldn’t have engaged with it, not because it’s not an important question but because I don’t want to read or discuss it as often as you do. What I can say is I’m not as sure as you are where we should end up. Which is why I was more interested in my question rather than yours. I’d like to form a view based on people’s thoughts not just my own on the other Championship teams’ potential and talent not just on an assessment of QPR and how much we’ve spent.

It’s very frustrating with Burrell. Particularly as he doesn’t have a bad injury record as far as I know and looked so good for the first half of last season.

I’m not sure about Dieng as he hasn’t done very well after leaving us so maybe he had one good season? Dickie I heard fell out with someone in the club and wanted to go and had a terrible drop in form. Willock obviously was the hamstring injuries which was terribly unlucky just as he was starting to look like he’d be worth a lot of money.

It does seem harder for us to get big money for players than some other clubs manage. Edwards does look promising but then the sell on clause plus what we paid for him mean we’d have to get quite a lot before it looks like a decent profit. We’re cursed obviously.

No I don’t have to compare net. Because I’m not looking at how well the club is run in this particular thread or how many players have been sold for a profit which has then allowed the squad to improve over time. You’re answering the question you are interested in but I’m asking a different question.

My question is in terms of the quality of players I have broadly assessed by how much they cost or how much the salary is if they’re loan players (a crude measure but there is generally some kind of correlation) are we punching above our weight if we end up getting into the play offs? That’s my question. Not about how much profit we should have generated by now or whether we should be doing as well as previous managers. I know you’re very interested in that but it’s not what I’m asking. If you look at the net cost of transfers then you’re artificially deflating the value of those players and therefore the quality of the squad. And you’re looking at how the club is improving the squad over time, which is an interesting point but has been dealt with endlessly.

If you for example assess net transfers and a Premier relegation side has sold £100 million worth of players and only bought £80 million worth of players it would be ridiculous to argue that their team is less valuable and lesser quality than Portsmouth who’ve spent £10 million net. Not real figures but for illustration.

I’m not going to answer all your points because they are a few I agree with or we’ve done to death but you haven’t answered in full the one question I asked. Who do you think we should definitely be outperforming (apart from Swansea and WBA). WBA have spent €12 million, €14 million and €€17 million across the last three seasons which somewhat dwarves what we’ve spent. Plus their wages are also considerably more - our wage bill in the last published accounts was 73% of turnover and theirs was 122% of turnover. Meanwhile Swansea have spent €27 million, €17 million and €9 million across the same period. Again you’d expect them to have a better squad.

And I don’t think you can compare what Warbs was spending to what we’re spending now. My whole point was that EVERYONE is spending more now. So if you’re spending more now than then then you’re just standing still.

I’m not saying we have no chance of finishing above those teams. But we would be over performing based on transfer spend in the past three years compared to other clubs not compared to what happened five or six years ago which is a different scenario.

That’s true and also isn’t it true that more and more clubs are spending big amounts now. You’ve got the likes of Portsmouth spending €10 million net transfers in one season.

Stoke have spent €32 million net transfer fees (transfer purchases less sales and €41 million gross purchases only). Wrexham have spent €39 million net on transfers. Both this season alone.

I asked this question before and didn’t get an answer then from anyone, which teams do we think we should be better than?

There are the three relegated teams that should be better than us.

Wrexham and Stoke should be better than us given the eye watering amounts they spent this season. Should we be better than Middlesbrough who’ve spent €25 million net this season alone and were very close to promotion last season with their old squad. Southampton who also have a parachute level squad and would’ve probably got promoted last season if not for spygate.

Then you’ve got Birmingham who’ve spent €54 million on transfers in the last three seasons and have a wage bill nearly double ours? Then you’ve got WBA and Swansea who’ve each spent around €13 million this season alone and big wage bills.

I’m not saying we should pack up and go home. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have ambitions. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have standards. Of course we should have some expectations. Coventry did it after all.

But it’s also not unreasonable to recognise that it’s a loaded deck we’re playing with. And sometimes when we lose at a team like Birmingham in the third match of a three match week it’s not just about standards it’s about money.

So us reaching 9th this season if we did could arguably be more impressive than Warbs doing it with the money he spent that season compared to what others were spending at the time.

We’re constantly going with our hands (and seemingly knees) tied behind our backs.

I still think the scheduling is crazy but FFS we just can’t carry on with all these injuries. It’s killing us. Something has to change.

Dembele playing now against Bristol City…

I hope we absolutely complained about that. The Bolton team were obviously told to go in hard as that wasn’t the only incident where the aggression was unnecessary. It’s crazy for a DS match. How the guy didn’t get a red card I have no idea. Pathetic refereeing.

As for Obikwu we don’t know why he’s not being picked. Maybe he just isn’t good enough. It happens.

Our horrendous ACL injury history
at 07:20 20 Oct 2026

Just wanted to also say that it’s a nightmare injury to deal with. My son has just had a knee operation which required a cartilage graft, which I’m guessing is a similar issue, and it’s been horrendous. It’s been very painful. He can’t really go out because he can’t bend his leg beyond twenty degrees in a knee brace which makes most activities pretty difficult and he’s understandably terrified of damaging it. He can’t really do anything for himself like get dressed, have a shower, even make a cup of tea. Crutches are painful if you can’t let your bad leg weight bear at all because all the weight goes through your under arms.

I think they have a lot of guts playing again. I really think my son is not keen to do anything that would cause it to go again because it’s not a pleasant thing to deal with. Thankfully he’s got some lovely friends that have come around to keep him sane - he’s only 22 so he should be going out and being an idiot not hanging around in bed or on the sofa. Six weeks doesn’t sound like a long time until you can’t do anything for yourself or go anywhere and then it seems like a very long time. And then he’s got all the rehab and physio to do. He can’t really go to work either because he’d have to get his colleagues to do everything for him which would be embarrassing and he’d be worried about knocking it or slipping when out and about but luckily he can work from home.

People had a go at Luke Shaw for going mad at the guy who nearly took him out recently but I can understand if you’ve had a horrendous injury and someone does a similar tackle to the one which caused it you might react similarly. I know it’s not life threatening like the sad news we’ve had recently of our popular posters but it’s not an easy thing at all.

What a shame! Looked probable at the time but I’ll miss him and his crazy exuberance. Also some much needed pace out of the squad.

Vale of Tears

It’s the going missing, particularly defensively that annoys me. When we get good defensive numbers it’s a lot to do with players further up the pitch putting the effort in. I’m not sure if it’s partly his lack of pace, so he gets caught higher up the pitch and can’t get back to defend. I still think he could be more involved and I’d like him to develop that part of his game.

He’s also suffered a bit from our wastefulness in front of goal. Taking figures from another player: Finn Azaz: he’s created six big chances and got five assists. Vale has created five big chances and got one assist. Obviously we notice assists more than promising passes that CTN.

That’s amazing news Mart.

She sounds like an incredible person with a lot of support from people who love her. That’s got to be a major factor in her prognosis. She has already beaten the odds from what you say so I’m sure she will continue to put everything into her recovery. Good luck going forward.

Fair enough Brian if you didn’t mean the team but that’s what you started with saying. When I say team I really mean the whole team rather than one or two players. But difference in how we interpret things so fine.

But I do think context in which games you win or lose is important. So Birmingham have played Bristol City, Middlesbrough, Wolves and Southampton in their other home matches, so more difficult teams, so it’s not like they’ve been playing dross at home and drawing but then play us at home and are magnificent. They’ve also brought in quite a few players so have probably been gelling and are now starting to click, hence moving up the table,

I genuinely don’t think yesterday was down to a lack of belief. I think it was down to not having enough quality on the day and our better available players being weary. Birmingham were not just good they were also very industrious yesterday. We can sometimes overcome our lack of quality in certain areas with effort and good organisation. But less so when we’re tired and we’re playing a team with quality, very few injuries and effort.

It’s a bit harsh to say across the board we lacked those qualities Brian. Bearing in mind we’ve got players coming back from injury and we’ve had a tough week and we playing a team that was assembled for over £60 million (plus loan players) we certainly had players that were putting in a shift.

I think our entire defence plus Charles, Kamara and Smyth were all putting in a shift although some looked a bit weary. Vale was a cardboard cut out and I think he should have helped out far more when they were overloading Adamson on the right hand side, sometimes he was trying to cover three players when they were bringing Stansfield over. Poku was also not tracking back enough or doing enough of the hard work.

I’m pretty sure Kolli can’t lead the line on his own without someone like Lloyd supporting him, at least right now and against better opposition. He looks absolutely lost and gives the ball away in dangerous positions as he thinks he can hold onto possession like Chair can but he’s not Chair. But I think he did put some effort in and it’s a shame Llloyd wasn’t there as an outlet and to occupy the defenders more.

It’s more than they have a huge amount of quality in their side and we’d probably have to be at our best and with more of our squad available and not playing them away at the end of a three match week. Which I think is what you’d expect when you’re playing a £60 million side when yours cost surely less than half that. Sometimes you just have to accept that on the day the opposition had a better team. But even then we had some decent chances from Poku who cocked up a header when in a great position, Kolli a couple of times and Kemper when a great cross came in. We weren’t destroyed but they were definitely better on the day.

I was worried that people were getting carried away when we were as high as fourth. Because it invariably means they overreact when we lose a match (not aimed at you this bit Brian, it’s a theme across the MB). I much prefer Stephan’s view about not getting too excited when we win and too down when we lose.

God know,s where Burrell is....

Stephan has literally been talking about when they’re likely to come back. He’s said they’re doing well on their individual plans, may be able to move to team training soon and were having scans to see how they are progressing. He can’t give an exact date because it all depends on how they do in each stage of their recovery. That’s absolutely right because we don’t want setbacks from bringing them back too soon.

If you don’t actually watch his interviews then you can’t really say that the club isn’t providing information. Not everything is a conspiracy.
