Saints V Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict
at 08:11:11

The upturn in intensity and grit in this team lately has been incredible. So sweet to tough out a win over the grumpy Mourinho. Stephens played a blinder; Ings finish was different class; Armstrong was lively; PEH and JWP were up for the battle and special mention to the maligned Cedric - he has played well the past month, as has Bertrand. Great win - not out of the woods yet, but the mood now is quietly confident and long may it continue.

Selection Headache Up Front For Hasenhuttl
at 09:48:17

Yes, both Obafemi and Adams justified the faith Ralph showed, and let's hope that the 4-2-4 formation and brave style of play is here for keeps. I would play Adams up front with Ings - I liked his game on Saturday; his hold up play, strength and willingness to run the channels - the goals will come for this lad. Obafemi is a good option off the bench.

Danny Ings Is The King Of The Scummers !
at 09:41:01

He just looks so much fitter and freer in his running and movement in recent times. His skills and predatory instincts for goal have always been there, but it's his mobility that looks so much better. Long may it remain.....his continued good form could keep us up! Merry Xmas to all.

Hasenhuttl Confirms January Transfer Intentions
at 09:12:56

If Ralph and co don't address the CM/DM situation in January, the game is definitely up. PEH/JWP as a midfield is a certain route to relegation - Rpmeu must play and the midfield must be strengthened. CB and FB are more obvious areas of weakness.

Saints V Norwich City The Verdict
at 21:37:57

Priceless 6 points v Watford/Norwich - a little bit of luck helped too.....often missing this season. We still looked like a struggling Club, light on in quality, and a midfield two, in front of our defence is going to cost us against better sides - Romeu on was a critical move Ralph got right - taking off Djenepo robbed us off counter-attacking speed which in turn emboldened the Norwich midfield (Tetty especially).

Two players I don't rate did very well, particularly in the first half. Shane Long provided the press and harassment of the Norwich defence and his flick on header for Bertrand was a lovely skill. JWP's free kick and corners in the first half were spot on - led to the goals and confirmed that in a struggling side you need your set pieces to count. I still thing that WP in a two man midfield is going to catch up with us defensively - and it showed in the second half. Not much mention of PEH, but his holding and box-to-box midfield efforts were crucial.

Great to see the reaction from Ralph and team at the final whistle - he certainly hasn't lost the dressing room. Crucial in January that CB and CM is strengthened, though I'm not holding my breath that it happens.

Saints V Norwich The Preview

I haven't seen Ward-Prowse "pick a pass and open up a side all season"....or ever. But you keep writing this stuff. There's a reason why so many people question his performances in the light of people like you who portray him as some sort of star player. If Ralph keeps playing a two man midfield with WP one of them, we are in a lot of trouble. It's the other area (in addition to CB) we are massively weak - midfield. Agree that PEH had a good game against Watford, and Redmond should be retained against his old Club. Boufal, Djenepo and Ings are the attacking players who can keep Saints afloat.

Saints Scapegoats Show They Have Fight
at 21:43:32

The irony of an article from Nick about Saints "scapegoats" is not lost on anyone.

Just a piece of context about the accumulated statistics seeking to showcase JWP's talents. A very healthy percentage of his "assists" and goals come from the corners, free kicks and penalties he has taken. Given that WP has taken hundreds of corners and free kicks in the last 7 seasons there is bound to be a pay off in the Stats. column - that doesn't make him a creative player....he is not.

Stop taking us for mugs...and deal with your myopic ideas.

Saints At Manchester City The Preview

Yet, attacking options IS the area we are lacking in when you play Ward-Prowse in a midfield three. Because he offers nothing as an AM or box-to-box midfielder, and nothing as a holding midfielder - the team ends up with two attackers....Redmond, a winger and Ings as a striker with no midfield creativity to provide service. Thats why we should be playing a Boufal or an Armstrong and certainly a Djenpo when fit instead of Ward-Prowse.

Saints At Manchester City The Preview

Nick - you ask " what has JWP got to do with whether Boufal is good enough or not". My point is Boufal has played far superior attacking Football in his limited opportunities this season than Ward-Prowse, who has played every minute - and apart from a penalty has been completely anonymous - many of your "readers" will have observed the same. Yet you proclaim "no more Boufal" and overlook the midfield liability JWP has been for many seasons. Don't question whether my posts deserve your "serious consideration" when your own are often littered with repetitive opinions dressed up as wise Football analysis.

Saints At Manchester City The Preview
at 10:27:13

I have to step in and challenge the BS in this preview. Boufal has been one of our few attacking players to show something this season. After a run of good performances, he got 9 minutes as a sub against Wolves - how does that demonstrate that he he can't hold his position. Furthermore, the claim that he has been "part of the problem" for three years overlooks the fact he wasn't at the Club last season. How about no Ward-Prowse - part of the problem for the last 8 years.

Hasenhuttl Wants To Win Dirty
at 09:34:38

Have to agree with your comments about the departure of Danny Rohl - it looked a formidable duo...Ralph and Danny, and since D's departure, Ralph has looked isolated and struggling for good feedback and support. Much as people might love Super Kelv; he and Dave Watson are hardly the offsiders a successful Manager needs. Let's hope for a gutsy result tonight for Saints.

Hasenhuttl Showed His Tactical Skills Against Wolves.
at 10:19:03

Broken record. How's your mate Ward-Prowse going? Never a word from you of the obvious weakness to our line up in playing him week in, week out. No attacking or creative instincts, no CM or DM instincts - hence pressure on midfield and CB's. If you want to draw a long bow between Claude and Ralph's tactical similarities - you would notice that JWP spent a lot of time on the bench or not in the match day squad....Claude got that right.....Ralph is in danger of trashing his reputation, and Ward-Prowse is part of the problem. It goes without saying that our CB situation has been dire since VVD's departure. By the way, despite your urgings to play Danso at CB (and I agree with you) I very much doubt he is the answer at present (and maybe not ever). The fact that Yoshida is our best CB (and he is) is a horrible reflection on Reed, Wilson and Kreuger and their profligate recruitment of the past three years.

Saints At Wolverhampton Wanderers The Preview
at 12:40:30

Let me put it this way Nick. JWP has made 240 or so appearances for Saints - I've seen most of them. By any objective standard he has shown no capacity for "flourishing" in the 10 role. Nor has he had success when played wide right or left. His appearances as a FB have been failures. When played as a CM with one other, we have been steamrolled in midfield - and when played in a midfield of three there is always too much pressure put on Romeu to cover WP's defensive and positional deficiencies. THat's why your view is hard to take seriously.

Your comments about Ward-Prowse confirm you know very little about Football. In all his 200 plus appearances WP has never successfully managed the 10 role...or any other role for that matter. Your previews have become laughable, blinkered opinion pieces.

Danso Must Play In The Centre Of Defence At Wolves
at 12:53:26

Nick - it's about time you let go of your incessant criticism of Yoshida and focused attention on the appalling JWP. How he is being shoe horned in to playing every minute this season is a primary factor in our awful performances. Oh, and if you had seen Danso playing for Austria u/21s the other night you might not be spruiking him for Saturday.

Saints At Brighton The Verdict
at 21:34:44

To take up St Brocks post,I too wonder about Ralph’s comments re Boufal - the guy is an attacking force who also tracks back - players like Boufal, Djenepo and Redmond are the players who are going to win games for Southampton - there is still so much dross in the team. When is Ward-Prowses automatic selection in the side going to come under scrutiny.? Surely his most ardent fans must admit his displays this year have been mediocre at best . On a positive note, Saturday’s result is a life line even if the performance was wobbly.

Why Kevin Danso Has To Play Against Liverpool
at 10:19:08

What is it with you Nick, and Yoshida? Your two year broken record assault on MY has reduced you to a dogmatic hack. Everyone knows our central defence has been a problem, particularly with the losses of VVD, Fonte and Toby. Just the same, when you line up Yoshida with our other CBs he is clearly as good if not better. Get off his back.

Why don't you cast a forensic eye on our midfield as it stands. For the umpteenth time v Burnley we learned that JWP can never hack it as a CM with one other. Why don't you jump up and down about the erosion of our mid-field strength?

You used to froth at the mouth arguing Shane Long was as effective an attacker as Sadio Mane - your track record isn't that smart.

We know Yoshida isn't the best CB to play for the Club - but he has been far from the worst. Give it a rest!!!

Five Minutes And You're Almost There !
at 23:37:37

Nick's "articles" have become laughable opinion pieces. Blinkered, tunnel vision krap. Yoshida HAS proved you wrong time and again - but you carry on overlooking the many limitations in our squad and zero in on someone like Yoshida who time and again in the last two seasons is left to try and retrieve our leaky midfield or flanks manned by fill in full backs and wingers. Of course he isn't on the same level as VVD, Toby and Fonte at his best, but with decent CB partners he is more than adequate. And to answer your question, he would easily get a game in many lower half Prem sides, including on the evidence of the past fortnight Wolves, Newcastle and Watford.
