Saints At Everton The Verdict
at 12:41:01

January is not going to come quickly enough as it now looks certain we will have been cut adrift by then. That being so, what CB of quality would be even remotely tempted to roll their sleeves up for a relegation battle that looks already lost? As to yesterday, Everton found space in a way we never did and, whether in attack or defence, always seemed to win the second ball. For the last two years there always seemed to be a reason to think we would survive. Not this time.

Absolutely ******* Disgraceful

I would only take issue with one of your statements Nick, and that is that one central defender will not be enough. We need two, and have done ever since VVD left.
You make the point about leaders in the shape of Ball and Case which is quite correct. Oh for a Dave Watson and Chris Nicholl now - it worked for Lawrie Mac.

Saints Need To Get Fans Back Onside With A Home Win
at 10:27:23

The word that best sums up all these posts is frustration. Frustration that at least one CB was not brought in and frustration that this has been the case for 4 transfer windows. Frustration that Cahill wasn't signed. If he had been, we would have had the leadership and organisation that the defence has been crying out for since VVD left. This in turn would have meant we could play either PEH or Romeo, but not both, freeing up space for more creativity in midfield (Boufal) = more threat going forward etc. etc. Call it a virtuous circle. If he was approached and wasn't interested then fair enough, but we need an answer. When the next Fan's Forum takes place, would some one please ask this question, because the final frustration is that nobody is ever called to account.

Ralph Still Has Faith In Valery !

Fair point fubsy, but then not playing him after Cedric pulled out would equally have destroyed his confidence - if not more.

Then why pick him as a sub if you don't think he is up to it - even in the event of his direct replacement being injured?

Saints At Burnley The Verdict

Pleased you mentioned Gary Cahill Nick. It's all a bit late now, but for the life of me I cannot understand why we didn't go for him. In the short term at least he was the obvious answer staring us in the face. Ever since Caceres was signed and then ignored in favour of Jack Stevens, it has been one bad decision after another.

As well as the Albion band, there was also the Dixieland Jazz Band with the guy at the front twirling his umbrella. I seem to remember thinking they were pretty good.

Would be very disappointed to see him go. It will also be seen as a failure to bring out the best in a clearly talented player who could have gone on to become something really special. Fully expect to see this happen somewhere else...….if he is sold.

Bit odd this. His lack of experience can't be something which has only just been realised.

Could add Sam McQueen to the list. Clearly surplus to requirements unless RB goes - which I hope he doesn't. Is he still on loan at 'Boro?
Would really like to see what Ralph could do with Boufal because the guile of Tadic was never replaced and needs to be.

Vote Rupert Lowe For The Euro Parliament

SanMarco, I was agreeing with RobtheSaint's desire to keep politics off this site, but since you ask, there can never be a just cause for subverting democracy - a concept of which the EU has only a very limited understanding. To generalise and ridicule the candidates standing for the Brexit Party is simply childish.

Five Minutes And You're Almost There !

The Yoshida debate is becoming as polarised and predictable as Brexit, and just because an opinion is endlessly repeated (Nick's) doesn't mean that it is wrong. Don't shoot the messenger, just look at the facts. If the club has ambitions to be more than perennial relegation battlers then someone like Yoshi is back up and no more. Surely we can all agree on that?

Celta Vigo Want Permanent Boufal Deal But Not At The Agreed Price

Quite agree DorsetIan. I too always hoped he would come good as his skills were never in doubt. That this never happened is more a reflection of the managers he played under than anything else. Given that Ralph operates at a different level entirely from his predecessors, maybe he can succeed where others failed. As you say, probably wishful thinking.

Southgate Talks About "Prowsey"
at 09:55:40

Iteeminants has got it right here. It amazes me that posters on this site can go from dismissing JW-P as an unfulfilled lightweight who, if he were a horse, should be taken out and shot, to now regarding him as a shoe-in for the England squad. It is worth noting that James Maddison has also been left out. While this strengthens the argument that you need to be playing for the big 6 to be selected, at least it demonstrates that Southgate doesn't have an anti Saints bias.

Saints V Cardiff City The Verdict
at 10:57:59

On the question of Targett/Bertrand, there is certainly a good case for the former keeping his place. However, Bertrand is too good a player to miss out altogether. It has often been said that he could play in central defence - well, maybe now is the time to find out. At least he would bring a measure of composure. Mind you, remembering the last minute at Goodison last season, maybe that isn't the answer either...……..

Saints At Fulham The Verdict

I suppose MH has to go, but how does any new manager/coach teach strikers to take chances and defenders to maintain concentration? Even Pep would struggle to achieve that.
For what its worth, Cedric has never been a reliable defender, and that goes all the way back to his debut at Newcastle when the 5 live commentator described him as lightweight and easily bullied. True then and true now.

Saint George. A few cheap laughs? Well possibly, I suppose, depending on your sense of humour. What is absent is any sensible response to a post which, as Lymosaint says, is reasoned, pragmatic and intelligent.

Saints At Brighton The Verdict

Nick has made the point many times over that we now have greater strength in depth than ever before. At the risk of repeating myself, I say again, is having a full squad of players of roughly the same standard better than a first choice 11 of outstanding ability backed up by academy products and others whose better days are probably behind them. I favour the latter and last night is evidence of that.
