From A Swansea Perspective |
I don't think we could have had a much worse start on Saturday. Losing a game you are expected to win is one thing, losing it at home is something more and losing it at home when we didn't really compete hard enough is like the final straw and probably just after it broke the camel's back as well. Luckily (or is that unluckily?) games come thick and fast at this stage of the season so we have the chance to bounce back immediately at Scunthorpe. We should have won there last season but conceded a sloppy late goal (sound familiar?) which put pay to those hopes. We also struggled there against Billy Sharp until he went off injured. However, any optimist will tell you that with not the same level of pressure of expectation we are bound to win. Gotta just love the optimists and let's hope they are right.
We have two players back from suspension as both Alan Tate and Lee Trundle return from their one match ban enforced on them following their flag exploits in Cardiff in April. Both seem certain to feature in the squad although only Tate may find his way straight back into the starting line up. With two coming into the matchday sixteen it's hard to say who may miss out as a result with not too many covering themselves with much credit on Saturday. Bayo Akinfenwa looks a decent bet for a start but I have an inkling that Kenny will continue with his preferred forward line of Knight and Fallon. Jackett's hand may be forced if slight knocks keep out any of Robinson, Williams or Izzy.
Scunthorpe look set to be without the suspended former Swan Steve Torpey although they hold out hopes that the dismissal may be overturned but if not then Keogh and Sharp will lead the line. Midfielder Jim Goodwin is definitely out
Played One. Lost One. The same record for both sides as Scunthorpe went down 1-0 at Bristol City on Saturday. One of those records at least has to give in the fixture.
Scunthorpe are seen as marginal favourites on Bet 365 with the bookies offering 11/8 on a home win and 13/8 on a Swans triumph. With the draw at an attractive looking 9/4 this one they feel is very close to call.
Showing little imagination for who may or may not start Lee Trundle is 9/2 favourite to grab the first goal with Leon Knight, Sharp and Calliste available to back at 5/1. I have to say that Fallon at 6/1 looks a good bet for first goal on this game but I rarely win so steer away from it.
Looking to bounce back from the weekend prediction that was as close as a Tom Williams corner to the penalty spot this selection is Fallon 1st goal in a 1-1 draw which can be backed at 35/1.
Despite the opening day defeat, Swans fans are still confident ahead of the game with 62 of 129 predictions so far saying an away triumph with a further 51 predicting at least a point for us. Leon Knight is again the chosen target to this time at least double his tally with the Swans first goal and is backed by 38 people at the time of writing.

On Saturday I said I could not see beyond a Swans win and would be disappointed with less than three points. I was wrong on the first count but spot on on the second. So lets try the reverse psychology and say that I cannot see us winning at Scunny tomorrow and see where that gets us. A draw. |
