French run goes on

Didier Deschamps’ French team are through to the World Cup Quarter Final thanks to two late goals against Nigeria in Brasilia.

France went in to the game as overwhelming favourites, but Nigeria have grown in to the tournament and were never going to be a push over.

Emmanuel Emenike was again a threat throughout maintaining the form that has won him so many admirers in Brazil. He did have a goal disallowed, but it was a goal line clearance by Victor Moses to deny Karim Benzema the closest we came to a goal before the late show.

France took the lead with 11 minutes remaining as ex-Manchester United man Paul Pogba headed home following a mistake by keeper Enyeama. Victory was assured in stoppage time when Joseph Yobo put through his own net to double the French lead.

France goalscorer Paul Pogba said after the game: "I have no words to describe this feeling. The whole country is behind us and scoring that goal really liberated us. I am so happy for the team and all of France.

"To score a goal for your country, especially in such an important game as this, to get into the last eight of the World Cup is one of the best moments of my life."

France will now play the winners of tonight’s late game between Germany and Algeria. Joachim Low’s team will be clear favourites, but Algeria will be out to cause a surprise.
