Southampton At Wrexham The Verdict Wednesday, 8th Apr 2026 20:53 What can we say about this game, yet another dominant, polished and organised performance from Tonda Eckert's men, who gave a real statement of intent for a play off spot, as they completed their transition from promotion also rans to genuine play off challengers. Once again Tonda Eckert made the most of his squad and in doing so highlighted just how strong a squad it actually is with 2 quality players for each position. Indeed one phrase you don't read much on social media anymore is " Sport Republic's transfer dealings have been abysmal. Of the starting XI, only Jack Stephens has been at the club longer than Sport Republic and on the bench 8 of the 9 subs were Sport Republic purchases, only Cameron Bragg is pre Sport Republic having come through the youth ranks.
At the start of the season I said on many occasions that we had one of the best squads in the Division, but as we now know Will Still failed to get the best out of them and now Tonda Eckert has knocked them into shape. There was a worry going into this game that the euphoria from the Arsenal game might result in a sub standard performance, but yet again Eckert's subtle changes to keep things fresh paid dividends. You could see from the start that the team was up for it and confident, even before Kuryu Matsuki opened the scoring in the 12th minute we could easily have been ahead, on 8 minutes Cyle Larin headed against the crossbar and from the rebound Finn Azaz headed against the bar when he really should have scored. But Azaz made amends with his subtle pass for the Matsuki that enabled him to turn and fire home from close range.
On 22 minutes it was 2-0 when Flynn Downes fired home from the edge of the box after the ball had rebounded out off a Wrexham defender. We were in total control and looked calm and confident, but Wrexham then got a lifeline, to be blunt referee Gavin Ward was inconsistent and awful most of the evening and he wasn't helped much by his assistants, however Ward was at his worst when he failed to see anything wrong with Keifer Moore's challenge on Taylor Harwood-Bellis, he flattened him and got nowhere near the ball, leaving Windass through on goal and he finished clinically to put the home side back in it. The second half was pretty much the same pattern as the first, Saints were in command early on and then as the game reached the hour mark Wrexham were beginning to up their tempo, but before they could make it pay, up stepped Cyle Larin, the Canadian striker intercepted a wayward pass and outpaced the last man to fire home the 3rd and sent the the vociferous travelling Saints supporters wild.
Surely now we would keep it tight and make sure that the host's got another chance to get something out of this game. There were the odd worrying moment, Daniel Peretz missing a cross and Keifer Moore heading the ball onto the post was one, But we didn't panic and kept our discipline with a confidence we were going to win the game and that was the case when on 81 minutes Ross Stewart deftly headed home to make it 4-1 a large chunk of the Wrexham supporters headed home themselves. Saints were rampant now and with Finn Azaz pulling the strings forced home their advantage, the keeper palmed out a cross and Shea Charles headed the ball into the path of Azaz who steered a well placed shot into the net. The Saints fans cheered every pass as yet another win and another game unbeaten.
This was a signature win for Saints, a team performance where 5 goals were scored by 5 different players, truly a squad effort From James Bree to Cyle Larin and all points in between. The great thing was that although we made several changes from the Arsenal game, it didn't weaken the side and when we made our 5 substitutions, again it did not weaken the team. The main thing though was not only that we won the game, but the fact that it put distance between us and Wrexham, we leapfrogged them into 6th place and we are now 2 points above them with a game in hand. Not only that we are only two points behind Hull and 6 points behind Millwall with a game in hand on both. We have taken the last 3 months with a number of objectives, firstly to get ourselves into the mix of play off hopefuls, then to get ourselves into the play off spots and now we can continue to look upwards.
Although we are only 6 points behind Ipswich in 2nd I don't think they are catchable, they have a game in hand on us, although as they have to come to St Mary's you never know. So automatic promotion is probably not in our sights, in truth if we had a couple of game more left I would fancy us, but i think the gap is just a little too big for the number of games remaining. But we can achieve one objective and that is to move up the play off pecking order, ideally to 3rd or 4th place and I think 4th is very achievable. So another good day at the office for Saints and again a great team performance, there is a spirit in the squad that Tonda Eckert has created, there are no superstars, everyone is an equal and together.
I noticed something at the end when the team came over to acclaim the fans with the now customary three cheers, each time they do this, the players push forward one of their number to lead the fans. I think this is the players own version of man of the match, their way of making sure that the man they themselves think should be given the plaudits. At Wrexham this was Finn Azaz and as many will know, I have been championing his performances for a while now.
He seems to be at the heart of everything this team does, when it is defending, he is there and picking up the ball and moving it quickly and simply to turn defence into attack. When we attack again he is always in the mix, picking up the ball and doing the simple things that go unnoticed. But this was a game where he did more, that simple pass to put in Matsuki for the first was another assist, his 6th of the season in the Championship for Saints and his goal made it 10 League goals for us. Indeed during this current run of 13 Championship games unbeaten he has scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists, it was a similar story in our first run of games under Tonda Eckert, in that run of 6 wins out of 7, Azaz scored 6 goals and 3 assists. The stats back up my opinion on him that he is the man that makes Saints tick, in that 7 game middle run where we drew 3 and lost 4, he failed to score or register an assist.
Make no mistake, Finn Azaz is the most crucial player in the team, he make it tick, he brings players into play, we showed in the last few games that we could win without Leo Scienza, as great a player as he is, but no Azaz and we are in trouble. We now have two home in quick succession, Derby County and Blackburn Rovers, two straight wins and we will really be in the driving seat. The season is heading for it's conclusion, we need a full St Mary's roaring the team on in both these games. So the final word of praise goes to the 1,300 Saints supporters who squeezed into a small part of the stand that was to be blunt not fit for purpose, perhaps this helped, it was small and that made it easy to keep all the Saints supporters in sync and make a lot of noise and make it they did. Literally every single Southampton supporter sang and cheered their hearts out, it was a pleasure to be part of it and truly it was the 12th man for Southampton, lets see it replicated at St Mary's for these next two crucial home games. Final word number two goes to the Saints fan a little older than me who was passing me to get to his seat, he stopped and thanked me for the articles I write on this site, this really made my day, if you read this I thank you for your support, not only for the team on the night, but for what is probably a lifetime of support and I am glad that you were there for one of those great nights in Saints history.
