Life changing moments
at 16:34 31 May 2024

Anyone had any ? I haven't. Never got married or had kids so haven't had those honours/duties bestowed upon me. Never won the lottery and even when I inherited enough money to pay off the mortgage in '23 it hasn't made any difference to my life-style. Not really had any near death experiences (touch wood) or undergone any religious re-births. A few dim and distant bedroom sports sessions, 6 months living in Spain and solo voyages to the other side of the pond are about as exciting as it gets for me.

Behind the blue and white mask who are the Bob Champion/Robinson Crusoe/blokes with the Britain's Got Talent hard-luck stories on here ?

Agreed. Quick feet and instinctive. Gutsy as well. He's going to do well somewhere.

Not sure Donald Fagen would agree with Lennon.

No one has mentioned Junior Hoilett. Unlikeable almost to the point of not really wanting to celebrate his part in the winning goal that day.

Not a great fan of sad songs (don't mind one or two but can't do a Morrissey, Oasis or Leonard Cohen CD). Also just about wipes out most female songwriters. Agree with Elton John and Bob Dylan and would add George Michael. Protest songs don't have to be so miserable. Listen to the salsa classic 'No !' by Willie Colon.

Agree on Micah Anthony. Looked quick and skilful.

Pedder never looked like he was going to make it to me.

Who exactly are we pinning our hopes on now ? Kolli, obviously. Bala ? Aoraha ?

I am sure we will keep the best that we can within our means. That seems to have been the strategy for a few years now.

Andre the friendly ghost departs
at 01:26 12 May 2024

This sequence of events has restored my faith in football,

He gets told he's going on loan to Birmingham, they nose-dive out of the division, he finds himself surplus to requirements and when he comes back he's told his contract is not going to be renewed and is without a club.

Now consider the (hypothetical) alternative. He stays with us in Jan. We continue in the same vein with him in the side. Birmingham are not hampered with him. We go down and they stay up. We keep him in League One because our better cm's find clubs in the Championship.

There is justice in football after all.

'A difficult decision was made in January, linked to the club’s financial realities and other market priorities, in a move that was additionally designed to afford Andre more starting football'

That's quite a back-handed compliment from our CEO.

Surprised he didn't go the whole hog and added 'But ended up with him not even being included in their matchday squad'

Players we should have kept
at 12:13 10 May 2024

Gary Waddock

I believe we released him owing to a career threatening knee injury

Went on to make 360 further appearances

I don't think he was the only one. I'm sure there was another who called it a day on medical advice only to go on to have a long and successful career

Love Pat Metheny. 'The Way Up' is unbelievable. You can listen to it time and time again and you will hear something new every time. Favourite Pat Metheny track: James.

Very true. He's polishing his cobblers on the bench to take Fergie's place in the Director's box when he keels over. Thank God we haven't got a dynasty. Its tainted them for years.

Essentially, he probably said the club was f*cked because he realised that he was talking to some chancer and so he got the response he deserved.

Reminds me of the time I saw Todd Carty in Wimbledon once and I said to him 'Hey, you're the bloke from Grange Hill' and he said to me 'Grange Hill, what's that ? I don't know that one. Is it any good ?'

Very similar to the Warburton situation really. Good manager who knows the score strategically and man-management wise but for one reason or another has run his course there. As I say, very similar to Warburton - knows his stuff, pretty straight with the players and quite pragmatic. Maybe just not sexy enough.

Must be a huge wrench for the lad, leaving his boyhood club after 20 years. On the other hand, this could be the breaking of the umbilical chord that he needs to become a fully fledged first teamer at another club.

Looks good. Very early days though. Its not until he's playing regular Championship football and being systematically targeted that we will know if he is good enough. Certainly though, in him and Salomon we have two that are well worth developing.
