Twenty four year old forward, Florian Bianchini has been left out of the current Portsmouth twenty five man squad which has been submitted to the English Football League (EFL) for the remainder of the season. There is a caveat to that as he is currently injured and has been since late November last year.
It was expected as we reported before the transfer window ended, Portsmouth have a number of injured players so twenty three players were named leaving two places available. The issue there is Bianchini isn’t fit and hasn’t been for ten weeks. Prior to that he struggled to get into the Pompey side and now this drawback could affect the rest of his season. He is currently in France with a specialist which the Swans have managed in an attempt to get to the root cause of his ‘ bone spur’ injury.
Bone spurs (below) are abnormal bony lumps that appear on the surface of joints that have suffered some degree of cartilage loss. Through wear and tear, cartilage, the "cushioning” within the knee joint, slowly degrades resulting in the formation of bone spurs as your body adapts to maintain the stability of the knee joint. Portsmouth Sporting Director Richard Hughes has explained his injury. "Flo has gone to see a specialist in France, it’s slightly more complicated being a Swansea player. They are obviously overseeing some of his medical procedures because he’s contracted to them still, despite the fact he is on loan. We are liaising with them. It has been a bone spur in the knee which has been causing a lot of pain, everyone is trying to figure the best way for Flo to move forward. At the moment, we don’t know when he’ll return, which is why we have left ourselves the space to make the decision.”
That may well be comforting to hear but Pompey have numerous injuries and are now seemingly concentrating on their own players hence the comments by Hughes on the Swans involvement. The Reims born player still carries a high value despite tricky times at Swansea City and on loan at Portsmouth. He is contracted through to the summer of 2028 with his fee to join the Swans from SC Bastia in France believed to be just over two million pounds. He was brought to the club by then Sporting Director Paul Watson who left the Swans after what was believed to be poor business over two seasons. Watson has also credited himself with bringing Michael Duff to Swansea.
The situation with Bianchini is a ‘wait and see’ situation with the potential he may not feature again this season at Portsmouth. More later on this.
