I had a vague notion that the Online Safety Act 2023 was about protecting children from undesirable internet content, which seemed reasonable enough. However, with key provisions of the legislation coming into effect in 2026 and 2027, many people are complaining that the requirement for Government to ‘white list’ websites represents a serious attack on free speech. For example, Denys Davydov, who runs a popular pro-Ukraine Telegram channel that reports on the Russian invasion, is saying that this could shut down his material on Youtube and Spotify.
Can this be true? Others too are writing about the potential for censorship and saying that the UK is going further than other Western countries in limiting free speech.
It's an obvious attempt to bring in censorship under the guise of "protecting the children". After all, who could possibly oppose that?
They showed their hand when they targeted Twitter's AI for allegedly allowing the production of pornographic images when Snapchat is far more commonly used for such purposes.
Expect attempts to ban most VPN's other than approved ones for home workers that the government can still control. Expect attempts to restrict dissemination of information that doesn't come from "trusted" sources like the BBC and the Guardian.
