They were very hit and miss!
The first single which had Wessex Studio's/Bill Price (Sex Pistols Never Mind The Bollocks sound engineer) input was great.
The other tracks on the first album were then recorded to lesser professional standard and quality elsewhere at a (run out of money apparently) 'demo-studio' where the bands ex-drummer even went on to complain that the LP was badly recorded and had let fans down.
Steve Jones felt something similar happened with The Clash and their first album comparing the drumming track recording to a 'crisp-packet'. I assume that to mean weak in sound/impact? More rustling than bang?
That Clash LP could have sounded even better... That is what you get when you get the groups 'roadie' to produce an LP as opposed to getting someone of reputation and experience like Chris Thomas with N.M.T.B?
And some PIL stuff went from great with songs like "Rise" to utter unlistenable cr@p like the majority of tracks on The Flowers Of Romance LP. How can someone get on stage and play a load of noise that sounds like its being made up as its going along with minimal effort, creativity and skill? Try singing along to or doing a cover version of this 'catchy classic'. Might aw well have been recorded in a pantry using a 1970's C60 tape recorder?
