The UK’s asylum system is struggling under mounting pressure and risks repeating past mistakes, according to a critical report from a cross-party committee of MPs.
The report, published yesterday by the UK's public accounts committee, said the asylum system was “failing to cope” and described its findings as “disturbing”. MPs warned that government efforts remained focused on short-term solutions rather than a long-term strategy.
Committee chairman Geoffrey Clifton-Brown said control of the asylum system had been “all but lost”, blaming a lack of coordination and a reactive approach to managing growing pressures.
He said asylum seekers were being left either waiting indefinitely for decisions or disappearing from official oversight altogether. The report criticised what it called a “directionless bureaucracy” that was shifting problems between different parts of the system rather than resolving them.
One of the committee’s main criticisms concerned failed asylum seekers whose claims had been rejected. MPs said it was “shocking and unacceptable” that the Home Office could not account for all of these individuals and therefore could not say with certainty who remained in the country.

Most of these systems are failing because the senior management in charge of them are incompetent, from MP's on down.
Nobody with the kind of ability and work ethic required to manage these large Government departments and processes would work for Civil Service pay these days, especially at the higher levels, especially in London. Mid level corporate jobs pay more, with far less public scrutiny. So key Government roles are filled with those who serious employers won't touch.
As an example, I used to work with a woman who was not particularly good at anything. She met a bloke with a good job and moved to London to be with him. She's since been promoted three times to something fairly senior, and will no doubt be promoted a few more times eventually. These are the kinds of people who populate Whitehall, and we expect public services to run properly. [Post edited 6 Jun 9:27]
