Portsmouth v Swansea City : Match day thread

Matos and the coaching team are getting a lot of things right currently which is credit to them, there are a few things however that still mystify me and I would love to understand his rationale for:

1. Picking Ronald for every game - the guy cannot beat a man, his crossing is woeful, consistently loses possession which more than often than not ends with us defending for our lives...his shortcomings far outweigh whatever defensive value he adds (we do have a right back there to defend) so whats his purpose other than extra cover?? Even the past few match commentators have raised the same points, one calling him a 'barrell chested journeyman' which was harsh but funny.
2. Leaving Yalcouye out - Bar his early games I think he has demonstrated a great work ethic, gets forward to support attacks, good range of passing and offers creativity along with being capable of chipping in with a goal? I

As i've said before Matos is steadily turning us into a better team, I personally think we could improve even further by addressing the 2 points above.

I actually thought we dug in for a change and Cabango and Burgess repelled everything thrown at them tonight, I've been critical of their partnership recently but no complaints tonight whatsoever they both put a good shift in.

Widdell lost his man to give them a sniff but apart from that we looked a lot more solid than we have done in the last few away games. Nice to see Vig coming off his line to catch a few too for a change.

Key and Tymon looked shattered in the second half so that's a concern with another game on Friday, I do think Vip could help the team more by putting more pressure on defenders especially in the air.

It's a rare away win, we played superbly for a half and we created lots of chances which is a step forward IMO, lots still to improve but we finally seem to be moving forwards not sideways and backwards these past few games.

Time to put our big boy pants on tonight and scrap for a result. The next big challenge for Matos and the team is to find the right balance in away games if we are to improve as a team. Its a different formula in the championship away from home which usually equals less possession, quick counter attacks and utilising your set plays (seems to work for Milwall, Hull etc).

Our home form is magnificent but is being completely eroded by our dismal away form so things have to start to improve here starting hopefully tonight. We have been switching off far too easily in away games to gift teams easy goals so the players focus and concentration has to be spot on toight to give us a platform to build from.

Focus, graft, physicality and being more direct will get us a result. Possession without purpose has got us nowhere away from home this season so we really need to mix things up a bit in our remaining games to become less predictable and more threatening.

We cannot continue to roll over and have our belly tickled away from home, time to stand up and be counted, the ability is there and hopefully the mentality will start to change too. Hopefully our wingers have been staying behind for extra crossing practice, if we could improve this facet of our game it really would make a big difference.

It would be great to start to see a progression in getting the ball past the press or forward quicker over the remaining games so we have a plan B in place for next season. When you analyse the sideways and backwards stuff it nearly always ends with an aimless punt from Vig that gives possession back to the opposition anyway - very rarely do we benefit from this approach which makes me wonder why we do it so often with all the tactical expertise we must have on the backroom team??

Progress for me over the remaining games would be:
- Be less predictable, play the ball through the middle more.
- Speed up our passing, play more passes in front of the player rather than to feet when he's facing his goal which is a nightmare if the pass is underhit and puts us under unnecessary pressure.
- Quick throw ins before the oppo are set, dont wait for them to get organised.
- Put our big players vs the oppos big guys at free kicks and corners to give us a chance.
- Get vig to come off his line when the defence needs his support, better to cut off supply and take a foul than try to save a shot or header from 6 yards out.
- Take more gambles when attacking instead of always looking backwards for a safe pass which takes us back to the aimless punt from Vig.
- Get to the byline more - cut backs are really difficult to defend against, far worse than an inswinger.
- Put all or a combination of the above together for the full 90 minutes, we cant be lethargic and then burst into life in the second half as we have been doing lately.
- be more positive away from home, we are almost safe and will not make the play offs so why not adopt a more positive approach, little point in going through the motions and hoping for the best. The away fans 100% deserve much more than they are getting this season.

Its not all bad by the way and I could list another 50 points for improvement, to be honest I would be delighted to witness just a few of these to give some confidence that we can evolve into something more dynamic.

The Championship next season will be tougher than this year IMO so its important we recognise the need to evolve and improve over the remaining games rather than plod our way sideways and backwards to 50 points.

There is no logic for getting rid of the Ospreys when they have a catchment area of over 300,000 people compared to the Scarlets which isn't even a third of this even when you include most of West Wales population into the mix.

Support has been a problem ever since the Ospreys formed with attendances varying from as little as 2,800 up to around 5-6,000 on average - this equates to less than 2% of the population which is incredibly poor when you consider the attendances the Swans get.

Whatever way the wind blows on this the people of Swansea have to get behind rugby in general or rugby will never grow in the city, certainly not enough to push for a move into the English pyramid as plan B. Give free tickets to schools, colleges, universities etc to create a buzz around the club, employ a marketing guru that can build excitement around the brand, drop ticket prices, offer more incentives....do whatever it takes to get people watching or we will continue to witness the slow painful death of what should be the jewel in the crown of Welsh rugby. the grassroots game is critical to this so positive links have to be formed with all local clubs to keep interest high.

Sadly broadcasting money is currently keeping the game afloat and now controls the game, it now looks like the English prem is starting to move towards a franchise model which IMO would be a disaster and another step to losing genuine rugby fans as TV audiences are more important than fans.

I would much rather watch Swansea v Pontypridd in a Welsh league if thats where this ends rather than the 'Vodafone WRU Cardiff Blue Jays' vs the 'Admiral Insurance Newport 1839 Uprisers' in the URC.

The WRU are a complete shambles, I hope the council, Ospreys management and the people of swansea and Neath can come together to keep the game alive in both areas.

I think we would have all taken our current position a few months back and to be fair we have seen some good football in the main since Matos took charge so this gives me hope that things will improve next season. The frustrating thing with us is how easy we let teams score, a few yesterday might have been stopped if players actually bust a gut to get closer to the man taking a shot, a lack of desire to make the blocks cost us yesterday.

Its clear to all that we need a few additions and also need to evolve our style if we are going to compete next year - more pace in the team, a better balanced squad with more physicality and players who can break the press and get us moving forward quicker. We need to ship out a few that just aren't good enough, hopefully we can find buyers so we can re-invest and rebuild.

The coaching team must realise that our current way of playing is limited, predictable and easy to set up against - everyone can see this including opposition teams so they need to earn their money and develop a more effective way of playing utiliisng the players we have.

Look at the teams competing up the top and they all have 3 things in common:
1. Big physical players in key positions
2. Can get the ball forward quickly
3. Press effectively high up the pitch

A wasted opportunity last night but a point gained I think.

If we are to seriously challenge for promotion we need to make a few changes / additions to the squad, the key ones for me would be:

- A big gnarly centre half who can add value at both ends and doesnt get bullied or knocked off the ball easily. Our current pairing just isnt good enough to get us promoted...too slow, weak at set pieces and unable to get the ball through the press into central midfield...this side to side stuff is too easy to set up against and we must find a way to get the ball forward quicker.
- Dynamic wingers who can hit the bylines and actually cross a ball - imagine how many Vip could score with this service. Ronald is just not good enough and Eom is not consistent enough to create lots of chances.
- Build the core around Vig, Tymon, Galbraith and Vipotnik if we can hold onto them.
- Extend loans of Yalcouye and possibly Nunes if they continue to add value this season.

Lots of work for Matos and the coaches still required to build a team capable and consistent enough to challenge at the top.

IMO we have a squad with perhaps 6 players good enough to build a successful team around, we also have a lot of very average similar style mid table level players that needs to be addressed either via coaching or exit.

As stressful as it was to watch that was a great win on Saturday just for the fact that we actually gritted our teeth and battled our way through it which is not something we have done for a while - credit to the coaching team on building some resiliance into our game which is an absolute must in the championship.

I'm still not convinced by the Burgess & Cabango partnership at the back however but in fairness they worked much better doubling up on Armstrong this week than they did vs the Derby lump last week - a positive. If we are to challenge up the top next season we do need more strength in this position to achieve more consistent results.

I agree with another poster on here that Vip could work a bit harder to hold the ball up or put more pressure on the centre halves to give us an out ball, in saying that however when you look at some of the best premier league strikers they do very little off the ball now which seems to be the way so perhaps i'm too old fashioned in wanting a bit more physicality or involvement from our striker.

The seeds have been planted for further progress which is the most important thing and gives me confidence that Matos can continue to evolve this team with a few new additions into a candidate for promotion next season. I still cant see us getting into the play offs this season because of our away form,I really hope i'm proved wrong.

It's a shame that you cant find ONE positive thing to say about the club, surely you don't feel negative and miserable all the time?

I will take a punt for you so you can start your week off on a positive note:

New manager - seems to know what he is doing, could build something with time
The football - Saturday aside has been a lot more enjoyable these past 8 weeks
Vipotnik / Tymon /Galbraith - 3 players as good as any outside the premier league.

There aren't many 'happy clappers' on this forum to be fair, I think most people understand where we are right now as a club. Your posts & comments would be more respected if you added more balance is my point.

Dishing out constant criticism is fine but I do think for your own sanity you could possibly offer more balance to your posts especially when we win or play well - c'mon its not all bad is it and we dont lose every week??

Frustrating 80% of the time supporting the swans I admit but certainly not all doom & gloom as your majority of posts suggest. It would be great to get your opinion on 3 things we are getting right / good at currently?

Left the game yesterday with my son wondering why we reverted to the old sideways and backwards style of football that’s got us nowhere in recent seasons. This slow, cautious, and bland approach shouldn’t be seen ever again in SA1 or anywhere else for that matter, hopefully the coaches see it as just a one-off or relapse after what’s been a good positive spell.

We played okay in parts of the first half yesterday but carried no attacking threat, leaving Derby more than happy to sit back and watch us play crab football. Their only real outlet was Agyemang, who bullied an exposed Cabango throughout the first half, with little support from Burgess or anyone else. This was frustrating as it was obvious to everyone where their danger lay. A shape change or more support could’ve nullified it, especially since there wasn’t much threat elsewhere??

Burgess and Cabango tend to keep a big gap between them to help keep possession, which works when we have the ball but is a problem when we don’t. Failing to address this early on and leaaving Cabango exposed just encouraged Derby to keep hitting the big man, who regularly won free kicks and got them up the pitch—it was like watching a praying mantis chasing its prey.

A hugely frustrating performance overall, but on balance, I have to accept we’re a mid-table team, still a work in progress with lots of room to improve, especially on physicality and also the dark arts of defending.

With respect - any keeper that is good enough to replace Vig will not settle for being second choice so is unlikely to join the Swans. Even the most ambitious clubs do not have 2 top quality keepers on their books, regardless of your opinion of Fisher you cant accuse the club of not being ambitious for giving him a new deal.

A good move by the club and will be mutually beneficial over the next 2 years.

Fulton is a decent player and seems to have a good head on his shoulders so will be a big asset to the younger players, in a game where change is constant there is a lot of value in keeping hold of established players who know the club inside out - might not show as huge value on the pitch but is worth its weight in gold off it.

Fisher is a capable number 2 and experienced professional, the club obviously see value in keeping him on too which tells me he adds value off the pitch.

I do agree with some comments on here about the lack of academy players coming through which is harmful to our finances, however I don't see either of the players above blocking paths for any young players - the academy players either aren't trusted or deemed good enough yet.

For the first time this season I am looking up not down, however still dont think we will break the 60 point mark so possibly a top half finish (hope i'm proved wrong).

Derby will let us have the ball and press our back line to force mistakes so it will be a big game for both Cabango and Burgess on Saturday in not getting caught out, if we can break their high press we can cause problems for sure.

The only change I would make would be Yalcouye for Cullen, he brought a lot of energy into things on Sunday and has a much better engine to get back and forwards than Cullen or Fulton IMO and also carries an attacking threat.

Finally, on a different topic I could not believe the amount of LFC supporter buses coming out of south Wales heading up to Anfield whilst driving down on Sunday morning - these people should be horse whipped or publicly flogged for crimes to football.

Looking forward to Derby on Saturday

Cabango and his astonishing handball loses the game for Swansea City
at 20:16 25 Jan 2026

Both Cabango and Burgess cannot play the pass quick enough currently which means we cant break quickly, far too many slow passes into players facing their own goal which causes us problems and invites the press. I would much rather see more balls into the channel which carries less risk and more opportunity regardless of how it looks.....

The ghost of Harry Darling gets better every time I see these guys play. Both good, solid pros but not suited for this style of play - either we change the style or the players its not rocket science.

Reading through the comments since yesterday and aside from the actual game my thoughts on this particular match trail would be:

- We all have different opinions and see the game differently which is part of the beauty of football and the reason these forums exist. I really do shake my head at some comments and opinions on here as I am sure you all do too but that is the beauty of this forum - if we all agreed on things people would get bored and move on to 3 hours of scrolling through tik tok.
- This forum collects all the thoughts and emotions of SCFC fans both negative and positive and is the reason we all keep looking in when we really should either be working or doing something productive (guilty as charged)!
- We all love SCFC, we all see things differently - this is a good thing.....really it is....

Ronald is improving (something I never thought I would say but hats off to him at least now having a go).
Our distribution from the back is too slow and very average and our biggest roadblock to winning more games IMO. The speed of pass from Cabango is far too slow and Burgess just isn't suited to launch quick attacks or play anything other than a long ball down the channels.
I thought the triple change yesterday came a little early as we were well on top at that point and should have kept pressing whilst Hull were on the ropes, we lost momentum at the wrong time?

Not sure what everyone's realistic expectations are for the rest of this season but for me it has been hugely frustrating and really is a missed opportunity as the league this year is wide open and very average. Let's give Matos some time to build something and hopefully next season we can carry more of a threat and compete up at the top.

Being a Swans fan = 10% enjoyment / 80% frustration & 10% hope.

Our Loan Strategy?
at 13:31 16 Jan 2026

Following Casey's return to WHU and especially after him getting pulled out of the cup game on Sunday questions have to beasked about our loan strategy for this season and what the actual plan was?

Benson - Arrived with pedigree and I would assume to offer us more attacking threat...cant get in ahead of Ronald who has had a very average season?

Samuels Smith - Highly rated and an international through all age groups with England....I dont think he was ever going to get in ahead of Tymon so why waste his time unless we had other plans for him?

Yalcouye - Clearly offers us something different in the middle of the park but has hardly played?

Casey - Seems to be a very capable player but never got a sniff despite Burgess and Cabango having the wobbles?

With the exception of Yalcouye it all seems poorly thought out and executed this season, no real positives either side?

Definite improvements needed with regards our loan strategy going forward.
