Could Long Term Season Tickets Help?
Sunday, 13th Sep 2015 09:30 by Planet Swans (follow us on Twitter @swansnews)

It was clear from the results of the recent site poll that Swans fans certainly believe that we have to expand the Liberty Stadium with over 60% of people who voted saying that expansion was needed first.

There has been much said in our time in the Premier League that the Liberty Stadium is too small with just 21,000 seats and the club have been looking at expansion for several years.

Chairman Huw Jenkins spoke at the fans forum this week around how the club needed large sums of money to complete capital projects and the expansion is just one of them. He was adamant that the club would not divert money away from the playing squad to cover the cost which leaves us with the requirement to raise money elsewhere.

That is a dilemma of course for a club that has been reluctant to borrow since the current ownership structure has been in place but this clearly is one of those situations that something has to give on that front if we want to expand to the level that we feel is right with current discussions around a 27,000 capacity.

There are other ways that could be considered in terms of raising revenue though with one of the ideas mooted before being long term season tickets effectively getting the fans to fund some of the expansion with a long term commitment to the club.

A 10 year season ticket at say £3500 or a 5 year season ticket at £2000 could raise a decent revenue for the club. If for example 2500 people were to purchase the 10 year one and 2500 the five year one the revenue raised would be £13.75m.

Even if just both tickets sold 1000 then the revenue raised would be £5.5m which is a significant step towards the cost of expansion.

The downside of course is that it would mean no revenue for 5000 or 2000 seats (based on the above) for 10 years but what it would give us is the ability to expand the stadium easier without the need for massive debt.

From a fans point of view the outlay is big but effectively freezes the annual season ticket cost at £350 (10 year option) or £400 (5 year option) which would have to be seen as value given the current cost is already over £400.

For me it is certainly something that is worth considering as an option, would it be something that interests you? Cast your vote in the poll below
