A perfect start to a new year

It doesn't take a genius to work out that a 4-1 win away from home is the perfect start to a New Year and a great way to banish thoughts of a disappointing three games previous where we had dropped eight of the nine points available.

Right from the moment the team sheet was announced an hour before kick off this felt a different afternoon with seemingly the strongest Swans line up picked and everyone looking to be playing in a position where they are most comfortable.

That was in stark contrast to the starting line-up against Wigan where it looked disjointed on paper and found itself to be just that on the pitch as well.

Of course it helps when you take the lead inside the first three minutes of a game and it helps even more when you are three clear at the interval but it is this kind of result that great runs of form can be built and we should remember all that was good about the performance and do more of the same in coming weeks.

We said on here after we fought back to get a draw on Saturday that tinkering within the team does not help and if Potter was to set a new year's resolution then it should be to play the strongest possible team at all times.

If that means a more constant presence in the side of the likes of Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge then so be it and scoring four goals is testament to just what can happen with this team when we do get it right.

Oliver McBurnie is now up to eleven in the league this season and when you add strikes from Conor Roberts and a second in two games from Mike Van Der Hoorn then you have many more reasons to be positive.

The most frustrating point is that we now have an enforced league break due to the FA Cup this weekend with our next league game being against Preston in 11 days time. What would Graham Potter give for another league game this weekend at this point in time?

There were downsides - conceding a late goal meant no clean sheet for the first time in two months but those downsides are few and far between compared to recent games where they have been plentiful.

We have been critical of Graham Potter and his team's selections and performances in recent weeks so today is the time to praise him for the same and if this is the tone of how 2019 will work then long may it continue.

Great stuff
