Will it be a Valley of cheers or tears for Pompey?
Friday, 8th Mar 2019 22:29 by pompey-fans.com staff

It was a happy Valley for Pompey last season - they won at Charlton in the Checkatrade Trophy and League One.

Now they return to south-east London needing the same result as they look to keep pace with the division's top three and in with a shout of the automatic promotion spot that looked theirs for the taking at the turn of the year.

The Blues found their best form again last week with a 5-1 thumping of Bradford but will need to be at their best against Lee Bowyer's side if they're to return back down the A3 with reward.

Kenny Jackett has been praiseworthy of Charlton in the run-up to the game, saying: 'Charlton are a very big club. Quite rightly so, they are one of the promotion contenders as they were last year. They have a very good squad of players.

‘It will be a big occasion on Saturday. A good crowd. TV cameras put in the mix. The sort of game that as a player you want to play in and you are in the game for. It is a big game. It will be a great atmosphere and the TV cameras add to that.

‘Charlton are a genuine contender for promotion places and so they should be, like Portsmouth you see the tradition of it. Quite a recent Premier League tradition.

‘They continually produce top players out of their academy. It is hard as you slip outside the Championship but they have continued to do that. That’s a credit to everybody at their club.’

Pompey say Matt Clarke, Ronan Curtis, Oli Hawkins and Nathan Thompson are all available, despite limping off the field last Saturday. Omar Bogle (hamstring) is a doubt, while Andy Cannon (quad), Bryn Morris (knee) and Jack Whatmough (knee) are definitely out.
