Saturday morning Swansea City update : Downes to face late fitness test before Derby County Saturday, 9th Apr 2022 09:00 by Keith Haynes Despite Russell Martin stating Flynn Downes could have played on Tuesday night at Millwall and would be available for todays game against Derby County he is to face a late fitness test today. It won’t bother swans fans too much if they see a similar performance from Jay Fulton as they saw on Tuesday night in the 1-0 win at the new den. Despite a tricky start on Tuesday Jay gradually worked his way in to the game and was one of the top performers on the night. Russell Martin does have other options as well with Korey Smith able to step in to Downes shoes, and a brave decision would be a start for Cameron Congreve. The much talked about academy product from Blaenau Gwent has tasted first team football this season from the bench. He didn’t disappoint. Martin also has the adaptable Ryan Manning who is a Mr Fixit in any role across the back or midfield, and he also has Nathanael Ogbeta busting a gut to start for the swans at left wing back. We can expect to see Ben Cabango in his familiar role at the back with Kyle Naughton and Cyrus Christie on the right. Matt Grimes came through Tuesday unscathed and a sensible choice for us would be Fulton slotting in as he did so well at Millwall. That leaves a spot for Jamie Paterson who plays far better starting than coming off the bench. The obvious choices up front are Michael Obafemi supported by Joel Piroe. ![]() Jay Fulton could start again later for the swans Hannes Wolf looks far more comfortable in a more central role and it would be nice to see him played there as well. If Downes doesn’t pass his fitness test there isn’t masses of cause for concern, there is another game coming up in Good Friday at home to Barnsley and then a Bank Holiday Monday game away at Reading. It has to be said as well Joel Owen Latibeaudiere played one of his best games for the swans at Millwall as well. Plenty of options there then for Russell Martin. Matt Gill standing in for Russell Martin yesterday afternoon said. "There’s still a long way to go in this season. There’s certain targets we set ourselves with sixteen games to go," he said. "Three clean sheets on the spin was one of those. There’s a number of targets we chalked off the other night. We’ll take every game as importantly as we should. I’m looking forward to this last period and seeing whether the team can continue the performance levels and the results that go along with it." Derby County are most certainly running out of games to keep themselves in the championship and a loss today and a win for Reading will almost seal their fate. It would leave them twelve points behind the royals with five games to play. The majority of Wayne Rooneys picks this afternoon are expected to be under twenty one. Kick off today is 3pm with the club asking fans to arrive early for some historic double celebrations, and to avoid recent congestion at the stadium entrances.
