Swansea City and their saleable assets that are most certainly available
Wednesday, 24th Aug 2022 08:00 by Keith Haynes

It’s really hard to assess the value of a player, and as we have seen in Joel Piroe’s case his value can change dramatically in the view of many fans. We haven’t used those websites which offer some very odd valuations on players, just our own nouse, which will always lead to a much different from opinion elsewhere. What do you think with the transfer window heading to a close ?

We haven’t included those players on loan or the usual Ryan Bennett and Jay Fulton conversations. And of course may well have excluded a few you would want included ? Join us in conversation below or on our football forum. TP = Transfer Potential.

Steven Benda - 23 years. £250,000 - £300,000. It’s no secret that Russell Martin wants rid of Benda. Tried to pass him off to Peterborough United but they refused to even talk about the swans one million valuation. Apart from Barry Fry’s usual lip. A competent keeper who performs better when on loan. Would be better in league one ? and certainly need replacing if he left. TP 8/10

Nathanael Ogbeta - 21 years. £200,000 plus. Nathanael became a misfit before he got out of the car to sign his new swans contract. Signed injured, needed rehabilitation and didn’t have a medical when he did out pen to paper. A desperate measure on deadline day in January.( as it was ) Not wanted by Russell Martin from day one and clearly not one he authorised as manager. TP 9/10.

Ben Cabango - 22 years. £500,000 - £800,000, Welsh international who should go to the World Cup. Has had a slow start after returning from injury but still more favourable in a back three from the selections Martin has. Can play outstandingly well but lacks consistency. TP 6/10

Matt Grimes - 27 years. £800,000 - 1.5 million, Signalled his intentions to stay with the swans by signing a new contract last year. Many criticise Grimes for his negative play, and that is noticeable. However, he retains possession well and loves the slow possession game. TP 3/10

Olivier Ntcham - 26 years. Free - £500,000, hard to put a figure on Ntcham, if at all, still has a year left to run on his contract. Should also go to the World Cup with Cameroon. Could well find a loan spot for the last year of his contract. Has looked useful this season linking with Ryan Manning but any club watching him will see a player who is inconsistent. TP 7/10

Ryan Manning - 26 years. £600,000 to £800,000. One of the swans more positive players this season. Bright and able to link play on the left. A versatile player with unlimited energy, this season one of the positives from a very poor start. The type of player every club needs, and many clubs don’t have one hence his high TP rating. TP 8/10

Cameron Congreve - 18 years. £400,000 - £700,000. Another really difficult assessment. Always looks like a young man who would bleed for his team. An academy product who is going to be a complete success in his football career. One of those outside bets that could alert a bigger club to purchase and keep in reserve. If he was sold on it would be a travesty. Would he go ? At his age he can afford to say no. However, the owners want assets creating and Cameron is an asset produced with little outlay. The perfect fit for selling if that’s the case. Maybe in another year. TP 5/10

Jamie Paterson - 30 years. £500,000 - £700,000. Yet another tricky one, has signed an improved contract after all the fuss in January. Since then he hasn’t performed and his relationship with Joel Piroe that was flourishing pre 2022 seems to have stalled. The valuation is high for his age because of the value Martin places on him. Rumoured to have been the subject of a £400,000 offer from QPR in January. If someone came in with a proper offer the swans would surely cash in ? TP 8/10.

Michael Obafemi - 22 years. 4 - 5 million. Has started the season sharp and has remained injury free which is testament to the off the field side of his training and medical assessment.A bright and quick player who has looked like scoring in every game this season. Opened his account against Millwall. A real natural goalscorer who has started this season as he finished the last. His attitude overall could put clubs off but he seems to be maturing on the pitch. Hasn’t been mentioned as a possible transfer sale due to the focus on Joel Piroe. TP 6/10

Joel Piroe - 23 years. 9 million plus. Joel is most certainly struggling, snatching at shots and generally looking well off the pace this season. Missed an absolute sitter against Luton with his head, but heading isn’t a strong point. That miss was evidence enough of his limitations as an all round goalscorer and his current mindset. Came to the swans with little reputation other than he was desperately looking for a place to find his feet. When he did he wanted to use use those feet to run away to another club. Refused a new contract, not scoring goals and needs time sat down watching a game or two without interference from his ‘advisors’ Serously needs to concentrate on the club who pay his wages and not himself.

There we are then, everyone’s opinion is different, there is some great talent there and we are certain inquiries for these players will pick up over the remaining days of this elongated transfer window. Let’s not forget the sales of Jamal Lowe and Connor Roberts, for us a shock regards pricing, just who can say the true value on any given day ?
