Jadel Katongo is a player we have been working on for two days. Welcome to our player profile for this twenty one year old who is a free agent. Get a cuppa, settle down because this is what we do best.

Age: 21
Born: Manchester, England
Height: Approx. 1.84m (6ft)
Position: Centre-back / Right-back
Preferred foot: Right
Current club: Kayserispor
Former club: Manchester City
Senior EFL experience: Peterborough United

⚽️ Background
Jadel Katongo is a highly regarded young defender who developed within Manchester City’s academy system, having joined the club at Under-9 level. His football education at City has been evident in the way he approaches the game. Katongo is comfortable in possession, technically accomplished for a defender and capable of playing the ball out from the back. His positional awareness and versatility have also been recognised as significant strengths. However, it was during two loan spells with Peterborough United that Katongo gained the senior experience necessary to complement his academy development.

⚽️ Peterborough United
Katongo spent two seasons on loan at Peterborough, gaining valuable experience in League One and demonstrating that he could cope with the physical demands of senior English football. During the 2023/24 campaign, he made 30 League One appearances, followed by a further 17 league appearances during the 2024/25 season. He was also part of the Peterborough squads that enjoyed considerable success in the EFL Trophy, winning the competition in consecutive seasons. Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson spoke positively about Katongo’s ability and, importantly, his versatility. He demonstrated that he could operate as a conventional centre-back, on the right of a three-man defence or at right-back.

That flexibility remains one of his most attractive qualities.

⚽️ Style of Play
Katongo should not be regarded simply as a traditional, physically dominant centre-half. His development at Manchester City has given him a strong technical foundation. He is comfortable receiving possession under pressure and has the confidence to move the ball through defensive and midfield areas rather than simply clearing his lines. He is mobile, relatively quick across the ground and capable of defending in wider areas. Those qualities make him particularly suited to playing as the right-sided centre-back in a three-man defence. His experience at right-back is another significant advantage. It demonstrates that he possesses sufficient mobility and technical ability to operate away from the central defensive areas.

Despite standing approximately 6ft tall, Katongo has also shown himself to be competitive aerially.

⚽️ Move to Turkey
Katongo eventually left Manchester City and joined Turkish Süper Lig side Kayserispor in January 2026. The transfer was reportedly worth approximately £300,000–£350,000, with Katongo signing a contract running until June 2028. The move represented an important stage in his career. Rather than remaining within Manchester City’s development structure or continuing with a succession of loans, he opted to establish himself permanently in senior football.

⚽️ International Football
Katongo represented England at several youth levels, including Under-20 level. He is also eligible to represent Zambia through his family background and has subsequently been involved with the Zambian national-team set-up. His international eligibility adds another interesting dimension to his developing career.

⚽️ Assessment
Katongo possesses a combination of qualities that should make him attractive to clubs looking for a modern defender with further development potential. He has had his contract cancelled and is a free agent.

His principal strengths include:

* Strong technical education at Manchester City.
* Significant senior EFL experience despite his young age.
* Comfortable possession and distribution from defence.
* Ability to play centre-back or right-back.
* Suitable for either a back four or a three-man central defence.
* Good mobility and recovery pace.
* Experience of the physical demands of League One.
* Considerable potential for further development and increased market value.

There is an important distinction between Katongo and many young Premier League academy defenders. Although still only 21, he is no longer simply a promising academy player waiting to experience senior football. Two seasons with Peterborough provided him with meaningful competitive experience, while his subsequent move to Turkey has broadened that education further.

⚽️ Swansea City an option ?
The Swans are aware of the player and his agent is behind the circulation of interest. We have been looking into this for two days. From a Swansea City perspective, Katongo would represent an intriguing recruitment profile. He has the technical background normally associated with Swansea’s preferred style of football, but crucially, he also possesses substantial experience of senior English football. His versatility would provide additional value. Katongo could compete for a position at centre-back with Ben Cabango and Stephen Welsh, he can operate on the right of a three-man defence or provide cover at right-back with Dilip Lissah and Josh Key currently competing for that area. At 21, he would also fit a recruitment strategy based upon identifying players who can contribute immediately while retaining significant potential for development and future resale value.

Should Swansea City’s interest be furthered, the important questions would concern Kayserispor’s valuation, Katongo’s contractual position was mutually agreed to end on July 23rd last month. He wasn’t getting game time, stated he was unhappy and with other players unhappy as well he trained away from the first team. They were relegated from the Turkish Süper Lig last season, finishing seventeenth. That failure didn’t help the mindset of many of the players. The club was put under a transfer ban by FIFA. More significantly, FIFA transfer bans have resulted from unpaid football-related debts. In June there were cases involving €120,000 owed to Copenhagen relating to German Onugkha and €106,000 owed to Joseph Attamah. Then in July another FIFA restriction arrived concerning €120,000 owed to former player Gideon Jung. These were “pay-and-lift” restrictions rather than permanent bans, but they’re clear evidence of financial pressure. (DHA, Türkiye)

Whilst compiling this report we managed to obtain salary details of £3,500 a week. Manchester city did have a buy back clause to resign him for five million euros, now on a free they haven’t been associated as interested. The mutual consent agreement we have confirmed has nothing to do with his playing standard. Others have also left, two of which are most certainly top Turkish league players. This displays a club under severe and immediate financial strain. More importantly, when he subsequently struggled for playing time, supporters questioned the manager rather than Katongo’s ability. In February, local media reported criticism from fans over why Katongo and former Manchester United youngster Sam Mather were barely being used. The major supporters’ group, Kapalı Kale were incensed at his lack of inclusion.

⚽️ Overall assessment: Katongo is a technically accomplished, mobile and versatile young defender with an excellent academy education and considerably more senior experience than many players of a similar age. He remains a developing player rather than the finished article, but his profile makes him one worthy of serious consideration for a Championship club looking for both immediate competition and longer-term value.

Signing possibility ? 6/10.

It’s the first player analysis I’ve read here, and I have to say I’m genuinely impressed with the breakdown—the overall clarity of it is really refreshing. I’d love to see him at Swansea, without a doubt; there are still plenty of interesting free agents available with great profiles. Adding two free agents alongside two paid signings feels like it would round off the squad nicely, but we need to move on a few remaining players first.
