The effect of a win on any given Saturday tastes the sweetest, midweek of course brings its own bounce in any fans step, but a Saturday win makes the weekend.

The Swans needed to give us something to shout about after QPR, and Stephen Eustáquio got things rolling after 11 minutes. Joseph Opoku did the damage down the right, fizzing the ball across for the Canadian to tuck away at the far post. Opoku then helped himself to the second on 32 minutes, getting onto Stephen Welsh’s ball forward, punishing a defensive mistake and calmly beating Balázs Tóth in the Blackburn goal. Just four minutes later, Filip Lissah brought down a long ball in the box and fired home his first Swans goal. Three up before the interval — that’s how you answer a miserable week.

Ross Stewart joined the party on 59 minutes, racing onto a lovely flick from Eom Ji-sung and belting a left-footed shot into the roof of the net. Some way to open your Swansea account! Four goals, four different scorers and a much happier Jack Army. After shipping five at Loftus Road, watching the Swans put Blackburn to the sword was just what everyone needed. That goal brought huge smiles for a player overlooked as Zān Vipotnik and more than likely Adam Idah have been given the sole striker shirt this season. However, yesterday saw both of those on the pitch as a double strike force (as such) It was smiles all round.

Vítor Matos praised the character of his squad after his players delivered the reaction he wanted. “We have a lot of players with really good character, a lot of players with a squad full of really good human beings,” Matos added. Those qualities have to count when confidence takes a battering. Swans fans can accept setbacks, but they need to see a team prepared to stick together and work its way through them.

“I think that’s the most important thing for us, to have these types of players who really care about where they are, really care about the team, really care about each other, really care about the club.” That last point will strike a chord with the Jack Army. Caring about Swansea City means understanding that supporters carry these results into their working week, long after the players have left the dressing room.

“That’s what we try to build, and when you have this kind of answer after what happened last week, you can see that.” Matos clearly took encouragement from his squad’s response, and supporters will welcome evidence that his message is getting through. The challenge now is to make that commitment a consistent feature of this Swansea side. We have seen a couple of games away from home that haven’t gone to plan. The ‘consistency’ remark isn’t about winning every game it’s about putting in a valid performance that displays effort and a realistic shift on the pitch.

We saw that yesterday from a team that when in that mood can dismantle any contender on home ground. The next test is a tough one, Portsmouth away this coming Tuesday at Fratton Park (7:45pm) The away allocation of nearly a thousand tickets has sold out online. And the Indy will be there.

The starting eleven dominated this game, however no game can be dominated in the way the Swans did for a whole ninety plus minutes. Vitor Matos stated post match he wants not only to win games but do it in the way we saw yesterday. That is (potentially) where certain fan frustrations will creep in when build up play reverts to recycling the ball to look for other outlets. Yes the Swans could have bagged eight yesterday but as Matos stated, ‘We want to win in this way’ Yesterday couldn’t have offered a better opponent to do so. A delightful performance with a huge test away from home this coming week if this continues to be the standard.
