Would Southampton Fans Welcome Back Adam Lallana To St Mary's
at 14:18 28 May 2024

I am not interested in all the stuff around the manner in which he departed. I think he got it wrong and he realised it after the event, but who amongst us has not made an error of judgement? Just move on - he gave us years of good quality service before that.

I am not opposed to him coming back it depends what they hope or think they can get out of him. Is it as a player to back up occasionally (in which something like play and pay) or as some sort of coach?

So How Was Everyone's Day On Sunday
at 12:58 28 May 2024

One of the best Nick. I am in my 60s and been more disappointed than I care to remember but for moments like that when they happen are all the sweeter.

Came down from East Yorkshire Saturday evening and stayed at a Premier Inn in Bracknell and got the train in to Waterloo and back via Paddington after the game.

The atmosphere on the train on the underground with Leeds fans as well was good and special in many ways.

Went to the Metropolitan bar at Baker Street.

The game itself - loved it, though if you ask me, I honestly struggle to remember that much about it. My impression is we were professional without the drama. Did a job and as a team we were competent in all areas.

After the game enjoyed the celebrations in the stadium, the walk down the streets to a bar (can't recall the name of it) on the way back to Baker Street, endless singing and chanting in the back yard of the bar even in the rain and then back to Paddington station to Reading and then Bracknell.

I am surrounded by Leeds fans where I live and work and did dread it to some extent. All the Leeds fans I came across on Sunday were pleasant and after the game the ones I came across took the defeat graciously and did not make any excuses.

Went with my brothers and my son. I don't get to spend that much time with my son and it was memorable to see the joy and happiness on his face and all the people around me. It was a special day all round.

if I am honest, the Premier League does not appeal to me and I have enjoyed this season in a way I have not enjoyed a season for ages. I just hope that having got back up we do the best we can to compete and don't just become another meal for the so called big boys to feed off.

A day in my life to never forget.
at 23:31 26 May 2024

A day in my life I will never forget. All the disappointment, the pain, the lows makes these rare days all the sweeter.

I am still speechless. I have no idea who played well and who didn't, it was all too tense but it was just a fantastic team performance and the support out of this world.

I have had mixed feelings about our manager but congratulations to him for sticking to it.

I have enjoyed the championship and some great days out but today was something special.

Referee for sunday.
at 11:06 25 May 2024

If it is a 50-50 decision or even say 55 - 45 our way it will go to Leeds Utd. The PL all the pundits, commentators etc all want Leeds Utd in the PL and not us. Plus the fact that officials will be more concerned about upsetting Leeds Utd FC and their fans than say "little" Southampton. I know I am being cynical (and it may be misplaced) but that is how I feel.

wembley tickets
at 22:57 24 May 2024

I suspect that is the case with my brother's post as he has had similar issues before and it is clear it has been held. The problem is Basingstoke in their infinite wisdom closed down their distribution centre and merged it with Reading and Swindon. My instinct is that those centres deal with post in their areas first and then Basingstoke. As they say, there is 1st class, 2nd class and Basingstoke class (not that you would normally put the words Basingstoke and class in the same sentence!).

My brother managed to order the tickets at 9:30 Monday but his tickets have not turned up and unless they turn up tomorrow he has to go to Wembley for 11am on Sunday - flipping stressful. He lives in Basingstoke and always has a nightmare with the post. Collecting them from Southampton FC did not appear to be an option. Just hope they come tomorrow to save the Sunday hassle and worry.

Have Leeds fans been able to get tickets in the Southampton end?
at 22:49 20 May 2024

It may be rubbish but as I live and work in and around York quite a number of Leeds fans are boasting that they have purchased tickets through Southampton and have supposedly shown their purchases on-line (with some bits erased). As much as I am looking forward to the final I do have a gut feeling that there could be trouble - they are certainly upping the anti up here.

Stoke Sign Rotherham Keeper
at 18:21 20 May 2024

I don't think in this case the division would have mattered Nick as at worst we remain in the championship - the same as Stoke City and we are a better prospect than Rotherham and I would say Stoke as well - and he could have ended up in the PL. But, you are probably right, it was never likely to happen.

Opportunity missed. Shame.

The early bird catches the worm - we don't really do early bird unless you go back to McMenemy who was adept at making sudden signings.

Fans drove that team on tonight

Brilliant and fantastic evening, support, atmosphere and game. Just a pity about the needless stupidity and behaviour at the end, especially as WBA fans had been so welcoming and accommodating before and after the game last Sunday. It is a pity we did not reciprocate it. But, that aside a memorable evening.

Did we go into the WBA game
at 17:52 13 May 2024

I think the away sides in both games largely went with the intention of not losing or certainly not losing by much rather than winning and put the onus on the home sides to go out and win. You are right, it could come back and bite us as I did feel that later in that second half we could have sought that win, though equally we nearly had our habitual kamikaze moment in our own penalty area.

I did enjoy the day out though. Easy to get to, easy parking at Mercure, good rapport between both sets of fans before and after, the hottest chicken Tikka at the Vine that I can recall ever eating, good atmosphere in the ground and pretty easy to get back home to East Yorkshire. I thought we were professional on the whole.

Three teams that got promoted are straight back down

Would agree with you there Dirk. They have given it a good go and have had a good attitude with, as you say, a very limited budget and team.

I don't think you should qualify for a parachute payment if you only spend one season in the PL. The 3 clubs that went up and are coming back down did not spend big (though I accept they probably had to increase their salary bill) which probably contributed to their downfall but it does mean they will have a financial advantage when they are back in the championship solely on the back of one season in the PL. It is different for clubs that have spent a number of seasons in the PL and then get relegated because their financial model has become more established to PL levels.

I am not sure of the stats but I think collectively the 3 gained the overall lowest number of points for relegation. Had Forest and Everton not had points deducted they would have been collectively relegated a couple of weeks ago.

WBA and Norwich
at 09:38 11 May 2024

So much of the playoffs appears to be centred around an all Leeds Utd Vs Southampton final at Wembley (certainly from the media). WBA and Norwich go into this with no expectation hanging over them, except may be from their own fans. WBA has barely been mentioned as a threat, yet at St Marys they could quite easily have won and were as good as us and were a real match. True, we gave a very professional performance at WBA but they seem to suffer from their manager being sent to the stands - I doubt that will happen again.

I just hope we do not go into this complacent or with any sense of entitlement. WBA are a good side and in one off games they are just as capable as winning as we are and away and at home we will need to be at our best and professional from beginning to end.

Moyes To Leave West Ham
at 22:03 7 May 2024

Moyes leaving whilst a dubious decision is not exactly surprising whereas Rosenior's sacking at Hull City appears completely bizarre and unjust (unless there is something behind the scenes which has brought it on). I thought he was doing an excellent job at Hull given the size of the squad, club, etc. It reminds me of the sacking of Adkins which felt so unjust at the time as well.

Moyes To Leave West Ham
at 09:02 7 May 2024

It reminds me a bit Nick of our relationship with Claude Puel.

We did not win anything with him but we did get to a final and finished 8th (though that 8th finishing was a bit misleading as points wise we were closer to the bottom 3 than we were to the top 6) but it was football for insomniacs. Apart from the final at Wembley the football under Puel was incredibly dull and uninspiring and not what Saints supporters were used to. The question was and arguably is, was Puel just realistic in his approach due to the quality of the squad or did he restrain the team with his tactics? I was one of those that did not call for his dismissal but I was not against him leaving - little did we know that what would follow him would be worse - but that is down to the failure and poor decision making by the board at that time.

Moyes is bit of an enigma. If you look at his pattern he tends have a good season followed by a poor one. On the whole he has done pretty well and as he said the difference this year is Rice - they did not replace him with the quality that was needed to continue their push or maintain the brand of football he was playing with Rice. Sounds familiar? yes, it does, selling your best players may get you loads of money but it is what you do with that money when you have sold a quality player and all too often that money appears to just melt away and the team becomes diluted and eroded in quality and what looked like promise starts looking desperate and you alienate the other players, you become less attractive and the supporters grow increasingly frustrated.

Awful today
at 09:34 28 Apr 2024

A 500 mile round trip to watch that Grumpy. I did not have a good feel about it and so it proved but I did think that being at home, we would not be as inept as we were.

That first half line up was a joke, but if he was hoping that some players on the fringe would show their worth, well he was wrong and the players themselves did themselves no favours. The midfield was appallingly weak - powder puff in offering a defence, ineffective in supporting an attack and I lost count how many times a poor Stoke team managed to cut through it almost at will. Shea Charles and Sekou Mara have been with us long enough now and have had enough chances to show development and improvement and they have shown neither and I can only conclude that they are never to cut it.

David Brooks had a mare in the first half and how he stayed on as long as he did is bewildering.

We actually had a few chances but as always we seem to find it easier to hit anything except the back of the net.

There was some improvement when the subs were made but not that great. The weird thing is that it was a game that had chances for a range of outcomes and we can only be mildly grateful that Stoke's finishing was or is as woeful as ours.

I thought Edozie and KWP worked hard. They did not get it all right but they did seem to try when all around them looked like they could not be ar*ed.

There was good support from fans in numbers but they were let down. Vocal support was not great but the players gave them little to be uplifted about.

Some people said RM was playing out the game to avoid injuries. I am not sure I buy that at all, because the body language and attitude said to me that here is a team now that looks bereft of confidence, ideas and belief and I left the ground wishing that was the last game of the season rather than going into what feels like a pointless playoff scenario.

After days of putting up with the proverbial from Leeds fans at work and locally, tonight's result is almost Karma - though only almost. I will only be happy if we beat them in a playoff game.

Southampton V Stoke City The Preview
at 10:32 26 Apr 2024

Agree Pat. We seem to have a soft underbelly and mentality that is easily broken. You are right that is not just a symptom of this team or season, it has shown through over a number of recent seasons. I would argue that it even existed at times under my personal favourite manager - Lawrie McMenemy. Over the years, we have all too often fallen at the final hurdle or croaked just as the prize has been within our reach.

That said, putting the recent downturn aside, by and large I have enjoyed the season and if I am honest, I did not expect to be in the top 6 at the beginning of the season and certainly not after those early defeats.
