There is cherry picking of stats, and then there is cherry picking of stats. We were not the best side in the League. Our goal difference was way less than all of the top 3. It is difficult to argue that we were better than Leicester or Ipswich when we lost all 4 games against them, the Leicester defeats being particularly heavy. I actually wonder whether a team has ever been promoted before, having lost 5-0 twice in a season (?). I'm over the moon that we have been promoted, but I can't make a case at all for us having been the best side. |

You're having a laugh. Seriously. How can you possibly say that a permanently injured left-back who has done NOTHING in a Southampton shirt is a better option than Perraud? Caleta-Car? Remind me how he did against Grimsby. |

I would assume there would be payback from increased corporate facilities (assuming they fit in more corporate boxes) and being able to hold more big events like pop concerts etc. I think we have to try and aim a bit higher as a club. I suspect a lot of people didn't think we would fill St. Mary's when we left The Dell, which was a much bigger step-change than increasing the capacity from the current figure of 31,000 up to 38,000. |

Well, he does live in Hove, so would be handy for him....... |

From the list on the original post, I think Edozie played pretty well on Sunday. Anybody who can shine in that big-match environment shouldn't be completely written off. We did make quite a few bad signings a couple of years ago (throw Onuachu and Orsic into the mix as well) but our recruitment in the last 12 months massively improved, mainly on the loan signings. We are still looking at loaning a lot of these players out for next season though; a number of them are not going to be up to the Prem, and buyers for them will be in short supply. |

Leeds bought Rutter for about £38 million. A big part of their financial problems now. If we are looking at Championship players, O'Hare from Coventry (available on a free) is definitely worth a try. |

I have to concede I was wrong. I didn't think we would get promoted under Russell Martin, as he had no track record of success as a manager. I feel he was however big enough to make key decisions and to make tweaks to our playing style which got us over the line. He will need big support in the transfer window from the Club, but I feel that we have enough about us with him in charge to stabilise in the Prem and get back to where we want to be, with top-half Prem finishes in 2-3 years. |

We seemed to be happy to let Leeds have the bulk of possession, but it was perhaps not what I might call good possession...... Second-half was very nervy. Nick has commented elsewhere on the lack of noise from our end; I think this reflected how nervous the fans were. I think this goes back to what I have said elsewhere about the club developing a winning mentality. That needs to translate to the fans, so that we expect to win, rather than fear an inevitable equaliser in injury-time. Hopefully Sunday will help us get there with that mindset. |

An utterly great day / weekend. Stayed with good friends in Bromley for the weekend, watched the Cup Final there on the Saturday in a pub with a load of Man United followers. Train into Kilburn on Sunday morning; The Old Bell is a cracking pub for Wembley games. Would recommend for future visits. Celebrations continued in Covent Garden on Sunday night. Train back home yesterday, via a celebration in a wet car park in Southampton.... Back at work today for a rest. |

Aiming to get to London on Saturday in time to watch the Cup Final in a bar, but yeah, staying nowhere near Wembley. Not least as it’s horrendously expensive anywhere near there this weekend….. |
| Forum Thread | Sunday is NOT "a good day out" at 08:26 23 May 2024
As the title says. This is the biggest game for the club since Swansea away in May 2018. This is a chance to cement a winning mentality and to shape the destiny of the club for the next 5-10 years. Lose, and we risk being in the doldrums for a number of years, possibly overtaken by the shower up the road. Win, and we could stabilise the club within the Prem and get back towards the heady days of Koeman. I hate a lot about the Prem, particularly the detestable way that VAR sucks the joy out of the game. However, to use a tent analogy, with the Prem the lesser of two evils is to be on the inside pissing out than on the outside pissing in. Please do not go to the game on Sunday with the mentality that if we lose it has been a good day out. We have to be far better than that; Leeds fans will not be like that. Roar the lads on to victory and get us out of the wilderness as a club. We simply HAVE to win. [Post edited 23 May 8:33]

Generally it is better to be lucky than good. |
| Forum Reply | Interesting question, would you ever want Saints to lose a match? at 16:25 22 May 2024
At the risk of being wildly over-aspirational and unrealistic..... We need a winning mentality at this club. Alan Pardew used to talk about it and he was spot on. Winning a massive game like Sunday's game would be a bit of a game changer for me; so many times we have been gallant runners-up or losers. To win on Sunday would be a step towards undoing that reputation and actually being known for winning something. And there is a trophy as well...... I think that we could be competitive in the Prem if we go up. We obviously need to somehow keep Downes and Harwood-Bellis, and sign players of quality in a keeper, striker and left-back. But the nucleus is there of a side which could have a good season in the Prem, bolstered by the confidence a Wembley win against one of the biggest clubs in England would bring. Sunday is absolutely not "a good day out". It is a big chance to re-shape the next 5 - 10 years for this club. And now time for a lie-down, one suspects...... [Post edited 22 May 16:27]
