Pubs would have to carry on being pubs and serving their community, they wouldn't have the choice to sell up and make millions. - Not if they aren't making money, you'd need some sort of market intervention to prop up ailing pubs just so they're there for the community. Loads of pubs have closed around Medway and most of them were mostly empty before they closed.

Also disagreeing with you isn't hating my own nation or culture however much you might think it is, so I'll leave it there.

I'd also say choosing to close a profitable pub to build flats to make more money quickly is also a result of capitalism, if not, certainly greed.

P.s I chose dominos as they set up in a former pub opposite where I used to live. Presumably more demand for overpriced pizza than pints, perhaps that's part of the problem.

It's not deflection, just pointing out that profitable businesses don't usually get shut down and their premises used for other things. You said that the community was suffering from these closures but seemingly not enough of the community was using them to keep them as viable businesses. To me that's broadly the result of capitalism, isn't it?

The two words that stand out for me in your post is "your side".

Anyway weren't pubs, chippies and hardware stores destroyed by capitalism with large companies like spoons, dominos and b&q taking their trade?

I'm guessing a goal wouldn't hurt either.

Good luck Eze, deserves his shot and hope he does enough to get into the Euros squad.

The press release said it will be a "simulcast" so not sure if it will be a direct sky show on ITV or whether ITV will be picking up a red button game and adding pundits. Be interesting to find out but I can't imagine ITV finding any worse than their usual.

Begovic - Best QPR Goalie in Years
at 08:35 1 Jun 2024

The good thing about last season was that he played every game (bar the last one) so when you look at goals conceded and points picked up for the defence you have a constant behind them and Begovic will be in line with the teams average performance. That's why we can say clearly that the stats suggest that the maturity and organisation came from Cook who really changed how the team performed and JCS also.

Begovic individually was the 3rd worst goalkeeper in the division which is below our mid-table status you have us down as. Across the season our opponents should have scored something like 7 or 8 goals less than they did, which is a fair few points lost through goalkeeper performance. We need better, a replacement may be worse (who knows) but we should at least try to get someone better and with room to develop. The good thing about him being 3rd worst in the league is that there are a lot of goalkeepers already performing better than him, so hopefully not that difficult.

Loads of new houses are getting built as well (housing some of those extra people) which put extra stain on the system, but they pay water rates so should expect for some of that money to be re-invested in the infrastructure. Instead billions of pounds flow out of the water companies and into the pockets of private individuals. Did they not know that they would need to increase their capacity, did they not think it was worth having a robust system that can deal with a few extra turds and some rain?

Thames Tideway is a great improvement but lets not pretend that it's not long overdue, it's replacing a 150 year old system. It also probably wouldn't have happened if it weren't for the EU rules around water pollution when the project started, if it was to be reviewed today I guess that the water companies would just lobby the government to change the standards.

My water company has sent me a marketing e-mail today to explain the difference between pollution and algal bloom, so I don't mistake the two when wondering why the waters brown. They weren't necessarily forthcoming in their communication that algal bloom is caused by excess nutrients in the water (normally feterliser or effluent).

I think the issues are greater in certain areas. They recently did a survey of the number of discharges per year into rivers and seas from the various water companies and I think the worst was up at 300+, so nearly every day just flowing untreated out into the environment.

It certainly seems to have got worse recently where I am in the South East with regular reports of beaches being shut or swimmers getting sick, beaches losing blue flag status etc.

Politicians generally make promises that they think are popular to get votes, I imagine that they would probably like to follow through with it if it was viable to make the next election easier. Fundamentally reducing immigration isn't the job of a moment, you need to keep public services running and try to avoid damaging the economy with inflation. Both of those risks would be a concern if you quickly stopped immigration. So once elected on these promises they are faced with the reality that if they follow through with it they'll have a load more problems and definitely won't get re-elected. So there best bet is to backtrack on the promises to cut immigration, no great mystery.

Maybe he just thinks it's ironic that people hail the democracy of the referendum but refused to have a further referendum once the options for what Brexit looked like were fleshed out.

If it's so great why don't we turn the general election into a referendum. It would have to be a yes/no type question s I guess do you want to stick with the conservatives or not? If/when conservatives lose we'll leave it to the MPs to decide what happens after that and the public just have to live with it.

The Liberal Democrats want to stop companies polluting our rivers and seas. It's a shame that when politicians were saying that leaving the EU will allow us to set our own rules they weren't clearer than it meant lowering our water standards so swimmers would get sick and we'd have to send bottled water to Devon. Who could have seen that coming?

I don't think the fact he was in that position means he ignored an injustice. At that point we're the PO still lying to the government? He may have been misinformed about the situation for all we know. If you can find anything that shows he knew the true situation and decided to bury it then you might have a point, but so far it's just assumptions.

I think it's fair to say the majority of MPs are decent people trying to do what they think is right for their constituency. It seems to mainly be the one's that want more power or to be celebrities that are more likely to be less honest as they try to wriggle their way into fame and power. But that's a handful out of the 650 MPs rather than the majority.

Also regarding journalism, is it the journalists fault that the public weren't interested until it was dramatised on ITV? If you can sell more papers publishing irrelevant nonsense about the royal family or predictions of snow, who's fault is that?

To be fair, if you've not been deterred by handing over a load of money to a shady people trafficker or the potential death crossing the channel in a small boat, I doubt your eligibility for asylum is going to make a blind bit of difference. Oooh you'll be ineligible for asylum when you get there... bothered. Should stop wasting time on them and focus on the people traffickers.

Once the manifestos are out, I like to do the vote for policies thing where you blindly select the policies you think are best without knowing which party they belong to. Normally gives me a good idea of who's at least talking the best game, whether they're able to deliver it is an altogether different conversation.

I like to think he sits down with the player in question, spreads a load of cards over the table with stock phrases on it and asks them to pick two they want including in their leaving statement.

SDM- "inquisitive mind sounds good"
Nourry- " are you sure, we've had that recently"

End of Term Report 23/24 – Goalkeepers
at 10:28 18 May 2024

But the stats are adjusted for that and he was 3rd worst in the league. Based on the shots our opponents managed to get in with an average goalkeeper we should have conceded 7 less goals.

Conversely Dykes's stats are average, he's marginally under the number of goals he's scored for the amount of goals expected from the shots he's had. We still want/need better and he's average, why should Begovic even be entertained as being adequate or even worse for a new contract.

Good podcast, it's interesting to think back to when Ainsworth was here and just how certain it seemed that we would be relegated. Puts into focus what a good job Marti did.

I'm excited for the summer and kind of agree with the bloke who said he wouldn't mind a full squad clear out, I trust Marti to bring in good players so the more the better to a certain extent. Financially it might be the right time to cash in on JCS, Field and a few others.

Be interesting to see what deals we make and how well organised the preseason is going to be.

Whoever the first choice is I think they will benefit from competition for places. Walsh has shown he can step in so to my mind that means we can take a risk on a new goalkeeper (like Stanley Nwabali) and assess them both in preseason. I wouldn't be going back in for Begovic personally.
