I saw yesterday that since Sr. Cifuentes has taken charge, our xG against has been lower than 1 in every single game. In comparison to Ainsworth who only managed that twice this season (Defeat at Southampton and draw with Swansea). In fact Ainsworth managed that 5 times in his 27 league games, compared to Cifuentes 5 times in his 5 league games! That really points to how much we have solidifed the defence since he has come in. I know we can all see that with our eyes, they immediately look much more organised. This will only improve more with JCS and Cannon fit and playing every week. I'm no expert in the analytics stuff but really looking forward hopefully to an article about this from the lad who write the stuff on here to understand what he's done in more detail (please Clive!)

As I understand, Xavier Calm is more the defence man and Cifuentes the attack man, but of course Cifuentes is the head coach so he takes the overall credit.

Attack is the best form of defense and we look up for it right now
Imagine how calm Steve Cook will be is the other team is smothered at midfield or we chase back to put out fires that breakaways start.
JCS was like a man possesed against Preston and not afraid to let the ref know his feelings now put Cook there alongside and we could be nasty finally

It's hard for teams to create and score when they don't have the ball as much, even harder when we have a clear plan that involves specfic jobs in advanced areas of the pitch, and not just 'put as many bodies in our area as possible'.

It's also shown that improved defending and surrdendering less chances is more about tactics and organisation than it is about individual players. That xG consistency has been achieved with Kakay, Cannon, Dunne, Cook, JCS, Paal and Larkeche getting minutes.

Noticeably, we have moved from 5 at the back to 4 ... over time.

What I observe is that Field now drops into the defence when the oppo gets into the last third and is helped by Colback/Dozzell if needed. Wingers track back to tuck into help the fullbacks (who now play as fullbacks and not wingbacks).

1)
When the ball is up for grabs it is 4-5-1 with middle packed to dominate. When we have the ball it is 4-2-4. Quite aggressive. I like it. But it only works if the 2 central midfielders drop into defence when we don't have the ball and are effective in doing so (Field is, sometimes the others are).

2)
When we do have the ball the team plays a pass and move 4-2-4, with rotations going on in the positions (fullbacks becoming inverted and dropping into the middle Paal style, Dozzel/EDB dropping into the Fullback position) and so on. This creates the gaps, but requires greatly supporting each other to make yourself available to receive the ball. If you get good the inverted Fullback moves up onto the Wing, and the winger becomes a one-side midfielder. All naturally happening in the play. This is what happened for our second goal against PNE. Paal received a long diagnosis in a far position way upfield ahead of Chair!

This critical but different approach is what Miracle Marti has brought to the team.

The inverted full back has become a bit of a thing but I like it and Paal seems particularly suited to it. His work with Chair in advanced positions is really very good.
