Alternatives:
- Round the pole.
- Hartlepool deckchair game.
- Get them to do that weird winter Olympics sport where you ski for a bit and then shoot stuff and then ski a bit more.

What about that game where you hold your hands out, palms together, and the other person tries to slap them?

Or... an airhorn goes off after normal time and a shirtless Blatter tears on to the pitch from the tunnel to the Ultimate Warrior's theme music. The team of the first player he takes out loses the match.

Mans game.

Smells like a trout farm in here

If after extra time the scores are level, surely the biggest brown envelope wins?

Fifa's favourite policy...

In all fairness, Golden goal extra time where both teams lose a man every 10 minutes has always appealed to me as a better footballing alternative to pens

How's about the old fashioned method? ie a replay.

Oh yeah I forgot mustn't mess up the TV schedules.

Well in that case penalties is by far the best option. A test of skill and nerve and great drama even after the most boring match.

Sure it's a bummer to lose on penalties, but no worse than losing in the last minute or to a goldern goal I'd say.

I agree with this (although I have never found a sensible solution better than ongoing replays, which will never happen in this day).

I always thought it unfair that teams who at the end of extra time might have only two players on the pitch whose specific job it is to score goals have to find others to do something outside their usual expectations. Many superb defenders and midfielders scored few or no goals in their careers.

Maybe my view on penalties is tainted by my first ever experience of them: AEK.

I am still Steve but no longer in Dagenham.

Oh yeah and the taking players off each team until one scores is bonkers. You'll end up playing a game that is nothing like football to decide a football match.

Each team starts on their own goal line and advances up the pitch towards the other goal, passing the ball to each other. The ball is not allowed to touch the ground. Each member of the team has to touch the ball at least once before the team attempts to beat the opposition goalkeeper, who alone must defend his team's goal. Meanwhile (or afterwards) the other team starts on its goal line, also advancing to the opposition's goal, passing the ball between them. If the ball touches the floor or the move doesn't culminate in a goal then the attempt fails. Either both teams could attempt it simultaneously (first team to score wins) or teams take turns at it, like penalties, whoever gets the most goals out of 5 attempts wins. Sorted.

Or alternatively they could play hide and seek.

For years MLS did not have draws.

With the scores tied at FT, the attacking player started dribbling from the centre circle and had x amount of seconds to make an attempt on goal. The goalkeeper could advance to the edge of his penalty area and the ball was deemed dead as soon as the goalkeeper made any contact with it.

Hmmm, thought about that, might be quite entertaining, but no ball involved. Isnt it a bit tenuous without a ball?

"Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks," Blatter said.

"Football should not go to one to one. When it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence."

Ummm, wasn't it FIFA who sanctioned penalties in the first place?

He [Blatter] added: "Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his football 2014 group can show us a solution, perhaps not today but in the future."

I thought that was his job? Silly me.

I would keep penalties but tweak it.....

All players left on the pitch should take a penalty
One team would take all their penalties first
Second team would then take all theirs

This would:-
Put teams with red cards at a disadvantage
Less likely to have one player at fault and taking blame (eg Gareth Southgate)
Make it more of a team effort rather than who has the best 5 penalty takers

Could tweak it even more by excluding anyone with yellow card and anyone wearing a blue shirt with samsung on the front should be made to do it blindfolded.

If only the Hartlepool deckchair contest had been filmed, it'd have been aired more times than the Pearce & Waddle misses in Italia 90

Or 2/3 attacking players v 2/3 defenders?
