I hear you’re a set piece team now father – Analysis
at 20:29 2 May 2024

Dunne wins the first header...and repeat! Absolutely pivotal having him in at right back, without him much of this simply doesn't happen.

It's amazing to see we have finally managed to coach set pieces into our game!

I think he'll make it in the Championship personally.

Time will tell, but I think in the right team and system things could work for him.

Begovic
at 21:59 27 Apr 2024

I think he's done well overall and been part of a much iproved defence.

Lots of mention of young keepers - I don't really care age wise, especially with keepers, but with the way we want to play I suspect someone much more comfortable with their feet will be the focus. Be interesting what Marti thinks of the current crop - I guess Walsh and Salamon will become 2 and 3, or maybe 1 and 2.

So I guess do we go with Walsh and Salamon (unlikely but I have no idea) and invest elsewhere if we think Walsh is ready / see how he does against Coventry and pre-season. If not I guess it's Begovic again unless we can find someone else. I'd have thought Walsh must be close now if he is ever going to be.

There are normally 3-4 stanout performances, but last night was the ultimate team performance. Everyone worked their socks off, everyone was disciplined, clever with the ball etc.

Begovic made a couple of great saves to keep the momentum with us.
Dunne, up against the Championship player of the year, so good they took him off.
Cook and JCS commanding and crucial blocks.
I thought Paal was outstanding last night, and very good with the ball.
Colback and Field absolutely bossed the midfield.
Willock, Chair and Anderson were all brilliant going forward and working hard.
Lyndon was basically on his own with our press being let them pass it about and then close - he must be knackered but had a great game and goal.

I'm not sure there is one standout from yesterday. Marti definitely won the tactical battle 100% - We won because of the way he setup us and because the players believed in it.

A nice problem to have as they say!

Who do we want to get relegated?
at 18:52 27 Apr 2024

I'd like Birmingham to go down, nothing against them, just the Eustace / Rooney thing and the way the sacked Eustace saying they needed a winning mentality in his leaving statement. Hmm.

Would quite like Wednesday to stay up, again don't care about them one way or the other particularly but like how their new manager has turned it around - I feel like they he deserves it.

Spot on, the difference defensively is immense, we are so much more solid now.

Willock - Will He Stay?
at 10:52 27 Apr 2024

I would love him to stay and suspect Marti and the rest of the team would as well. He's back on it, with a manager who rests him when needed and has got him playing well again.

I suspect he will go, more money elsewhere and a new challenge, perceived better chance of being promoted.

Team for Cov

I think it would be interesting to have 1 or two play, eh Walsh and Pedder, but for the rest strongest team out.

If you play 4-5 to test them, it's not really a first fair test - you really want 1 or 2 you are not sure about on the pitch at one time.

Good that Birmingham and Huddersfield have to play each other.

Hard to predict, good we have lots of teams below us.

1 win and we should be ok I think, or 3 draws.

They do like to put us through it!

Squad contracts
at 22:30 10 Apr 2024

I'd agree with most of that.

Whilst I realise he is unlikely to sign, I'd definitely keep Willock if it was possible.

I'd still be happy with Kakay as cover with squad rotation requirements, but Marti clearly doesn't rate him so assume he will go.

I guess the big question would be who will be in goal if we are releasing Begovic and Archer.

Hopefully we can get a few contracted players out on loan also, and improve the squad that way.

I guess it's must win for Wednesday, so Armstrong up front makes sense to hit them on the break.

I like the team, but as Brian says our bench doesn't look as good as it has done recently.

Assume some players dropped for fitness reasons, and maybe Marti listening to physics advice as per the other thread recently, a reason maybe again for less injuries than we normally have. Must also keep lots of players happy as more get game time, as selected and not just if someone is injured.

You can also see how happy every single player was for him, it's clear he is really popular. Loved the way the team all celebrated, team spirit is definitely there.

I can't remember the last time I have been so pleased for someone playing for us!

This just makes me feel good - when players like Jimmy Dunne who have always had the right attitude come good you can't be anything but pleased for them.

MOM today

We all see it differently!

For me, he got us going first half , getting the ball, moving it quickly and looking for forwards balls, disrupting their play when we didn't have it etc. Agree Field made a difference, but I think that was as much Hayden going off.

We were collectively awful first 10 minutes, after that I'd have Frey, Hayden and Paal as contributing the least - but I see some think Frey played well. I'm not writing any of the new boys off to be clear, but solely on today (which is a bit unfair), they were the ones we got the least out of. I thought Hodge was unlucky to go off though. Dykes was much better for me than Frey when he came on.

Anyway, we won, so nice to argue over who was best!

Going to be a tough one for Clive.

It's between Colback, Dunne and Willock for me.

Willock scored the winner, great through ball for Smyth's equaliser, good defensive work and great on the ball.

Dunne was immense at right back, both defensively, going forwards and at set pieces. So pleased for him as someone who always tries his best and never cries off injured, is he our No1 right back now?

I thought Colback was brilliant today. He got our tempo going, he tracked back so often to help others out, sprinting at 94 minutes like it was the first minute, used the ball well (mostly), all over the pitch and hugely influencial.

Definitely not good news for us. They were nosediving at speed, and as said above expect he will get some wins that might get them over the line.

He's not a miracle worker though and we are one point behind - I'd fancy us with Marti rather than them with Harris to get at least one more point than them.

Saturday's games
at 12:37 21 Feb 2024

Of the teams above us within 3 points, all are playing away:

Southampton (4th) v Millwall
Watford (11th) v Hudderfield
Cardiff (14th) v Stoke

Of the teams above us within 6 points of us, only Blackburn at home:

Sunderland (10th) v Swansea
Middlesborough (13th) v Plymouth
Blackburn v Norwich (8th)
Ipswich v Birmingham (3rd)

Obviously we have Rotherham. Sheffield Weds have Bristol City (12th) at home.

We know they never do, but the table would look so amazingly different if results went the way of current league positions and you'd have an incredible of teams just of the last relegation spot - more so of Sheffield Wednesday win.

If we thought winning at Stoke was a great chance to change the table, this weekend really is, which makes the Rotherham game even more terrifying as we know how these things go.

Psychologically for us and other teams, this could be huge, if we can get out and other teams get pulled into the mix further.

They started a thread to get him out before he started - fair to say they never warmed to him!

Whilst amusing, I do find their dislike for them quite amazing - from the word go, and ongoing. They have about a million threads variously to get him out, why they dislike him, why he is crap, what he has done, and each one seems to get to multiple pages.

So in fairness to Beale he has united their fanbase!

They don't suffer fools lightly as they say!

Too right Brian - that goal is a thing of beauty.

Weight and angle of pass from Willock, the lookup and intelligent pass back to Chair and then the first time composed finish.
