Change to permitted FFP losses?

I don't know if this is official, but I can't say that I'm in favour of it.

Everton points deduction reduced
at 07:34 19 Mar 2024

The PL don’t have a sliding scale like there is the the EFL. Up until Everton they hadn't even given the punishment a thought. Forest breached the FFP upper limit by £34.5m!

The punishment was 3 points for breaching, a further 3 points because it was a big breach, but with 2 points deducted for good behaviour (admitting the beach and helping with the investigation process).

A breach of that scale would be hit with 12 points in the EFL before any aggravated circumstances or mitigation.

Exactly this.

Whichever of their defenders who made that excellent tackle on Smyth after he had rounded Dieng as good as won the match for them.

We could, but you but you’d not get a good price for any players as it would scream firesale. Anyway, all the noises coming out of the club suggest that we don’t need to.

The transfer window opens on June 14th. Leicester had already moved their end of their financial year back to 30th June, so they have time to sell someone.

They have a player out on loan at Bologna with an agreed fee. That may be enough to save them.

I think what is being said is the Leicester are forecasted to breach this season, but have found a loop hole meaning that they don't have to adhere to an imposed business plan.

I'm just quoting the regulations.

My interpretation would be that if we breached this season, it couldn't be definitely determined until our financial year was over (May 31st) regardless of any FFI, so any points deduction would be next season. Make sense?

Sadly not.

That would be treated as Deferred Income and allocate to the appropriate season's accounts. It would help cash flow if there was an issue with that though.

I got my date wrong.

Both the audited accounts and FFI have to be submitted by March 1st.

No and no.

FFP submissions are not published, although occasionally snippets emerge when a club goes to tribunal.

Converting loans to equity is purely a balance sheet transaction, it does not affect the profit and loss. Kieran Maguire usually describes it as swapping a loan that will never be repaid for worthless shares.

Cat 1 doesn't protect you from having your bright young stars taken, it just increases the compensation.

The last figures I've seen are:

For each year in an academy between the ages of 9 and 11: £3k

For each year in a Cat 3 academy between the ages of 12 and 16: £12.5k
For each year in a Cat 2 academy between the ages of 12 and 16: £25k
For each year in a Cat 1 academy between the ages of 12 and 16: £40k

There are additional payments based on appearances up to £1.3m (if a player makes 100 Premier League appearances)

For a player poached between the ages of 12 and 16, 20% of the next transfer fee if the player is sold before they are 24.

Cat 1 does not enable unfashionable clubs with a training facility on the flight path into Heathrow to keep hold of their starlets.

There is an EFL tariff for breaching FFP:

The penalty for breaching of the 3 season P&S reporting rules is a deduction of 12 points to commence in the season following the breach.

The following number of points shall be deducted from the 12 points

9 points if less than £2.0m
8 points if between £2m and £4m
7 points if between £4m and £6m
6 points if between £6m and £8m
5 points if between £8m and £10m
4 points if between £10m and £12.5m
3 points if between £12.5m and £15m
No deduction if the breach is greater than £15m

Then the balance shall be further reduced if the loss in the final season is less than the season(s) before.

The Guidelines go on to show that a diminishing trend in spending may then be taken into account as demonstrating an intention to comply with the rules. Aggravating and mitigating factors are then available for consideration.

From the more recent breaches, they seem to apply about half of this, presumably on the understanding that the decision is not appealed.

Remember that we had 4 years of parachute payments after being relegated from the Premier League. These payments are included in the revenue figure. Allowances were made for a reduction in revenue and I have allowed what I believe is the minimum level of these. The calculations I've made are shown on one of the linked articles.

In theory, the owners could vote to end FFP if they wanted to. What I don't know is how EUFA would react to this as FFP is their (Michel Platini's) scheme. The majority of owners want FFP.

These accounts are for last season (22/23). The crunch season is this one (23/24).

If we get through this one still in this division and without suffering a points deduction we will be in a better place. I do hope that they have learnt from this and don't act in the same way.

Surely that was the Ale Faurlin affair, not the FFP breach?

I can't say I recall that, but my memory isn't what is was.

I'm trying to find the resolution document I downloaded for this where it laid it all out.

A sliding scale of fines were the punishment when we rode roughshod over the FFP rules. They are pretty much off the table now and replaced by points deductions, although no punishment is completely off the table.
