Spotting of talent at a very young age
at 14:01 26 Jul 2024

The English coaching system seems to be steeped in what I’d call Chuckle Brothers football.

Probably why Eze got rejected time and again, coaches probably wondered what the hell was going on when we went on a run. That said, looked like Southgate and JFH have beaten that out of him over the summer.

Yes, it starts for me when the swimming ends.

The only watchable part was when a small third world country might enter a lad who’s only just learnt to swim but apparently they’ve banned that as well now.

For a club like ours, it’s got to make more sense to give up on anything below under 16’s, have a single scout, maybe a couple of them, employed to keep a forensic eye on all these kids with a view to pick a few off that aren’t at the top of the food chain.

We can’t compete in that pool and the days of a Raheem Sterling scenario are long gone.

Are they looking for fans on the board?

Just wondering if I should warn them.

Used to love the Anglo Italian Cup pre season, Swindon v Napoli, jumpers for goalposts.

Those were the days and better than playing unknown Spanish teams in their local park.

Where are all the insects?
at 14:32 23 Jul 2024

Recently drove along a street I lived down in London 35 or so years ago.

The council have cut down every tree in the road, every house has replaced its pretty little grass front gardens with tarmac drives. Everything green had gone and the road looked shit.

And then they lecture us on environmentalism.

They’ve probably all gone to a warmer country.

Most of us only stay here because it’s a nightmare getting out of this place, a passport, digital tickets, countless regulations, all different, if you want to take some luggage with you, liquids, customs, it’s never ending. If you’re a bee you can take one look at this country, think fck this, and off you go.

Get to net zero and there won’t be a bug in the Northern Hemisphere. They’ll all be sunning themselves down South.

The summer after the winter before, all of it.

Glad I’m not alone, I was getting a little worried. Treated to a whole summer of sport and the word that exclusively comes to mind is Harrumph.

I need my fix of Jimmy Dunne.

VAR? Not in Norway
at 06:58 22 Jul 2024

I’d only have VAR in Kevin Friend related fixtures though he’d still pick us off with dodgy free kicks around our box.

Think it will need direct fan power to have any chance of ridding us from the VAR disease.

Is there an age where you shouldn’t wear a cap, other than on a golf course?

My preferred option is back to front but at nearly 65 it looks fckin silly.

Didn’t go yesterday so my initial take on the 2pm team sheet was where are we with the 3-1 part of a 4-2-3-1 formation on Aug 10?

Andersen for sure and assume Chair if he’s not sold. But the right side is a worry and it wouldn’t take too many injuries to decimate the attacking side of the team.

Our season may rest on the few youngsters coming good.

Sort of wanted to see this one but many years ago vowed never to go to another pre season friendly ever again.

If I want to watch professional footballers piss balling about doing square passes and having a stroll, I’ll stick to England at international finals.

Jimmy Dunne

Can’t blame him for hedging his bets. Two other right backs about the place, was out the side for a period last season, playing for a team that has made the bottom half of the division its home.

He must be aware he can hold a place certainly higher up this league so best to wait and see if the club finally do something about the forward line, see how the club progress in first half of the season, then he will be in a better position as to whether he wants to stay.

In his case, unlike say Sinclair, he’s already proved he can hold his place in this league so I’m quite comfortable how’s he’s going about this.

Warburtons tenure came unstuck the moment he thought he could shift Jimmy to LB. It all went downhill from there.

I don’t think Martí will make the same mistake. Jimmy plays right back and we build the team around that. End of.

If we do go with what we’ve got up front we can probably kiss goodbye to Martí.

On that basis I’m 100% certain we’ll bring in one or two forwards in the next month.

Did Southgate's tactics cost England?
at 11:20 16 Jul 2024

I wonder if, for English players to play to their full potential, they need foreign players playing alongside them. A dilemma when it comes to international football!

As we saw ourselves in the second half of our season, the arrival of Andersen was our equivalent of the second coming. A player whose instinct was to play forward, not only play forward but move forward rather than standing and admiring his contribution. Suddenly a whole raft of previous disappointments blossomed into something reminiscent of professional footballers.

Foden seems a classic example of this, outstanding in a Man City side of like minded players but unrecognisable in the international side. Too many English pkayers are coached in % passing, it’s rife in the game. It’s why the Gerry Francis’s have all but disappeared. Gerry played without fear, never afraid to risk losing the ball, that sort of thing has been coached out in the England set up.

Movement, or the lack of, in English players, particularly when off the ball is awful and has been for a long time.

This is one of the reasons expansive coaches need to rule the roost in development and national coaching. Beyond Klopp it’s hard to see anyone having the charisma to carry that off.
