Stockport C. vs Chesterfield 20:50 - Nov 4 with 26208 viewsD_Dale

At half-time in tonight's replay that will decide Dale's FA Cup opponents, Stockport lead 2-0. A pity in a way as Dale would probably have stood a better chance of beating Chesterfield. Still, whichever side it is, the winners will face a big challenge to prepare for Saturday.

There’s certainly a realisation that these sorts of performances and runs are a feature that maybe we all should get used to if only because over last season and this it’s happened time and again. The mood lifts - see post Sunderland - then eleven days later there’s little optimism about. Similarly, we will have a bad run and there is much gloom - see post Hull - and then a good win will be achieved and it swings again. It was the same in the last campaign with the two Rotherham games being good examples of a positive swing somewhat akin to Pennsylvania getting round to counting some postal votes, leading to comparable extreme reactions in both cases.

The point? Dunno. Maybe everyone needs to accept a middle ground. Which is one reason why it’d be good to hear the manager/players to admit when we fall short. Not everything has to be “exciting”, especially when it isn’t.

Broadly agree

Perhaps though, the dismal performances will become less frequent when there's acceptance that the fans don't need jollying along. There's still a lot to be optimistic about, but for once the reality of such a poor showing needs to be fully acknowledged in order for us to be optimistic it'll be put right

Au contraire. In a year with no income coming through and the chance to earn some prize money and potential TV monies in later rounds, this was one of the few games we needed to win.

But can't begrudge Stockport who were excellent and should do well this season.

Yeah it would be great to have drawn Liverpool at Anfield in the 3rd round and not been able to go.

On the prize money topic yes it would have been a nice bonus but we can't rely on it and the old saying of being able to concentrate on the league rings true. Staying in League One is worth much more to us than a little FA Cup run.

Precisely. If our business model is dependent on a decent cup run each year we’re fooked! Cup income a bonus not a given. Besides the last 2/3 seasons have probably brought a few shekels in to compensate for events like today.
Min aim this season must’ve been stay up in league one , which I think we will fairly comfortably, and crack on for the season after.

Pretty fair assessment from BBM I would say. And gracious in defeat.

I think BBM's post match assessment was fair.

Looking at other results We are not the only team on the end of an 'upset'. I'd say Mansfield beating Sunderland is a bigger shock.

I would challenge the view that we broke Stockport down numerous times and created numerous chances. I would argue that’s the one thing we didn’t do and why we lost the game.

"Played well for long periods" thats the very least you'd expect playing at home against a non league side really bbm, play as well as you like without hurting anyone though is pretty pointless.

Firstly congratulations to Stockport on their well deserved win. I would like to think that thanks are also in order for highlighting the current situation at the club in terms of Rochdales football psychology but I doubt the lessons will be learned. In fact I know they won,t because we have been here many times before.
BBM strikes me as a laid back type of chap (probably why he lasted with Hill so long) which is an admirable trait. Unfortunately though it is reflected in his team. Its the F.A. cup and a local derby to boot so where was the passion?
Its one of the oldest adages in the game when you play opposition from lower divisions, namely forget the fancy dan football at the beginning. JUST make sure that you match them man for man in effort, closing down and competing. Otherwise as we did you may find yourself trailing and even with superior quality, it then becomes an uphill struggle. Sadly today it was compounded by the fact that to me there was no discernible difference in quality.
I have witnessed today what feels like a 1000 pointless square passes. This obsession with pedestrian possesion football is great when you are two up but against a team that after half time unapologetically parked the bus, just allowed them to keep their shape.
To break Stockport down we had to scrap and we had to scrap at pace to put them under pressure but it never happened. We also don,t have a single player other than Rathbone and Tavares who is prepared let alone capable of taking on a player wide and at pace.
Yes playing at pace you will make a lot of mistakes and lose possession but I would suggest no more times than we did with our diagonal long balls today.
I don,t see it as being fair to criticise individuals today because the truth is they are being told to play like this. Like watching water polo played in treacle.
It was telling to me that against perceived superior opposition in Sunderland we were up for it from the kick off and showed we are capable of moving the ball rapidly. I can,t help feeling that there was an element of the Billy Big B llux at the beginning today which is a kindergarten mistake under the circumstances. Another day we might have equalised or we might not have witnessed the first goal brilliance but overall we asked for what we got and Stockport duly obliged in giving it to us.
We were a pussy cat team today that got its belly tickled when we needed to be a hissing tom cat from the start.

Regarding your Lge 1 comments, I'm glad of the Charlton postponement immediately prior to 2 consecutive home games against teams likely to be around us. Depending on who plays on Tuesday, everyone will get 11 or 14 days rest + Humphries & Baah get more chance to recover. These Saturday/Tuesday runs are tough on teams with smaller squads especially if key players are injured. Thats why this year I'm not bothered about the extra games in the cups ( I usually love the FA cup in particular) as I would rather have that rest to focus on the league. 6 points from those 2 games would really be a turning point & 4 would be decent. Hopefully a decent rest will get us back to how we were playing a couple of weeks ago

And we'd better have a good FA cup run next year too !!

Kings Lynn winning at Port Vale was a shock. Great result for them, but won't get the publicity it deserves.

Correct...I don't think our CEO will be a happy bunny ce soir? Where are the staff bonuses to come from.

We only have the EFL Trophy left to make a few quid and that's it. We're skint.

What bonuses?

Agree that the EFL Trophy is worth progressing in now. With the longer gap between games, don’t want to see too many kids on Tuesday.

We’ve had some decent cup runs in recent years but only after sneaking through the earlier rounds in some cases.
We could so easy have been embarrassed by Wrexham and Boston last year and only just survived when playing the likes of Gateshead, Aldershot and Maidstone in previous seasons.
Remember Callum Camps’ last minute equaliser in Kent?
Our luck ran out today.
Quite frankly, as soon as their second goal went in I feared the worst. I just don’t think we have the creativity to score two goals in a game, let alone a third with the team we fielded today.
Good luck to County in the next round and I hope we play them in the league soon. We need those 4000 away fans!

That bloke's 4000 fans in Wetherspoons comment was interesting because since we started recording such figures, the most they have ever brought to Spotland is 1471.
