2022-2023 Squad 00:29 - Apr 10 with 62344 viewsHullDale

Just had a quick look at the squad, and who is contracted for next season:

Contracted for 2022/23
Sam Graham - Summer 2023
Max Taylor - Summer 2023
Aidy White - Summer 2023

Liam Kelly - Summer 2023
Conor Grant - Summer 2023
Jimmy Keohane - Summer 2023
James Ball - Summer 2024
Ethan Brierley - January 2024

Abraham Odoh - Summer 2023
Luke Charman - Summer 2024
Tahvon Campbell - Summer 2024

Out of Contract
Joel Coleman
Jay Lynch
Brad Wade

Jim McNulty
Eoghan O'Connell
Jeriel Dorsett (loan expires)
Joe Dunne
Corey O’Keeffe
Paul Downing (loan expires)
Max Clark

George Broadbent (loan expires)
Stephen Dooley
Alex Newby

Josh Andrews (loan expires)
Danny Cashman (loan expires)
Matt Done

10 players contracted, 17 either out of contract or loan expiring. I half expect us to try and sign Broadbent & Dorsett permanently, but one thing is for certain - 2022/2023 will be a fully Stockdale squad. Out of everybody in contract for next season only Keohane & Grant are survivors from the BBM era! Hopefully the rumoured increased playing budget, coupled with a more settled club and experience from this season, will see a more competitive team next season.

I'm sure that the next ten days or so will see some comings and goings.
Contracts are expiring and clubs want new players integrating asap with the new season starting early..
To my mind the team that starts the new season will be the first that RS can say is truly his.
I don't really count the scramble round last July for players as part of his squad building but by September he'll have had two transfer windows to mould his own side.

Looks like Dorsett has done enough to earn a new contract at Reading (even if they haven't announced it yet!)

Ollie Banks released by Barrow by "mutual consent"

Anyone think he could be of interest?

With EOC gone as well the squad is looking a little "bare-bones"
Hopefully one or two signings are in the pipeline

Squad looks threadbare in several key positions. Full back, central defence, centre midfielder and out wide. Manager and board need to be decisive in their recruitment over the next ten days or else we are in trouble. Honeymoon period over, let's see what you've got.

We’ve five central midfielders and Keohane can play there too. Agree we need to sort the fullbacks and CH positions with three players probably required there - RB, LB and CH with one of the fullbacks able to play centrally a la Rhys Bennett. Keohane obviously provides extra competition on either flank too.

Those plus a versatile forward with some pace who can play wide would be enough to start the season. Then loans can add to the squad where required.

Even with Ebanks landell arrival, we need minimum three new defenders I'd say.Thats on the assumption Taylor won't be a starter and White will spend the majority of the season injured. Not that he's good enough for this level anyway. Point taken on midfielders. Two wide players and a target man also please. I am assuming EOC was our top earner, so we should have some room for manouver.

What honeymoon period?

I'm fairly certain the manager and club knew EOC was going to leave and will recruit accordingly, as well as in the other positions you mention.

We suddenly signed three players last week that nobody expected.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

When you say that White isn't "good enough for this level anyway", i assume you're simply referring to his current status as a bit of an invalid, rather than his proven ability at a much higher level than Dale?

We need two wing/full backs and at least one centre back and maybe two if Stockdale is planning on playing 352. In midfield and up top we have a reasonable amount of options, although I wouldn't mind another wide player as I am not totally sold on Odoh.

With Clark and O'Connell turning down new deals in the past few days it may take a while to secure their replacements. We certainly have a better squad than this time last season, bar probably the defense.

As a wise man once said patience grasshopper.

I would like to think RS was prepared enough to have options in mind, because I suspected he knew O'keefe and O'Connell would likely leave, I must admit Clark not signing a contract was a surprise.

Hopefully we will sign some players this week, but the longer you wait, the better players tend to have signed for somebody else. On paper, the midfield is okay for now, but we need at least 1 more, but the defence is weak, we need a possibly 2 RB (1 cover), a good left back, at least 2 CD, and at least another striker. In terms of CD, we have the moment Graham, Taylor, McNulty and Ebanks-landell. There are questions about Graham, but at Harrogate last season, I thought he played well at RB, when he came on, so is he more a RB, then CD?

Now Connell has put his cards on the table and left, there must be a reasonably good wage back in the pot. I wouldn't bet against Downing making an appearance if only on a play as you go basis, I think the Taylor we will see this season will be a much better player than the one that started last season, there were signs in the latter part of last season that he was getting the hang of what was required. White's major problem hasn't been ability but fitness, he may surprise us all yet.

TBF, he was only really touted as a possibility in the "ROCHDALE SUMMER RECRUITMENT PLAN 2022".

Could it be possible that Dorset might return.
Downing injury record could be an issue but RS did say the club will help with his recovery.
This may give RS and the coaches time to valuate Downing as possible signing..
Downing would provide leadership that will be required at the back to help players like Taylor, Graham.

As much as I'd like to see Dorsett return, I don't see it happening. Had a quick read last night, and it looks like Reading have taken the option to extend his contract by one year - I don't think they'd do that just to loan him out again with no guarantee he'd sign back with them after it.

I'd gladly be proven wrong, though!

It might seem like a smart move to sign Downing on a pay as you play basis, but I don't think it would save much on wages as we'd just need to sign another CB as cover if so as his record proves he can't stay fit. Why not just sign a CB who can stay fit anyway?

Tangled up in blue.

There are no guarantees regarding injury, a new CH could arrive for his first day training at 10.00 and be in hospital by lunchtime.....people who try to protect an injury often make something else worse by doing so, the trick would be to check Downing out for a few weeks pre-season and try to figure out if he is fully recovered from his previous injuries and try to build up the muscles and tendons that might have been affected by but not connected to the original injury.. hence a tough pre- season should find if the problems are solved and improve his confidence that it doesn't need to be protected.

Obviously there are no guarantees, but you can only make decisions based on the evidence in front of you and judging from the last few years it's much more likely that Downing will suffer from injury problems than most other available centre backs.

If we sign a new CH who passes a medical and he's in hospital by lunchtime on his first day then that's downright unlucky. If we sign Downing and he spends the vast majority of the season on the sidelines then that's a bad decision that could easily have been avoided.

but if he was on a pay as you play contract at least it wouldn't cost us anything

I can't see anyone signing a strictly pay as you play only contract.
A reasonable basic which was heavily incentivised perhaps.

The trouble is, you can't really be "incentivised" to be fit to play. Indeed, you might become incentivised to play when you're not, leading to early substitution of even breaking down as the last defender leading to conceding a goal

Incentives for goalscoring, for instance, are a different kettle of fish but fitness...?
