2022-2023 Squad 00:29 - Apr 10 with 62593 viewsHullDale

Just had a quick look at the squad, and who is contracted for next season:

Contracted for 2022/23
Sam Graham - Summer 2023
Max Taylor - Summer 2023
Aidy White - Summer 2023

Liam Kelly - Summer 2023
Conor Grant - Summer 2023
Jimmy Keohane - Summer 2023
James Ball - Summer 2024
Ethan Brierley - January 2024

Abraham Odoh - Summer 2023
Luke Charman - Summer 2024
Tahvon Campbell - Summer 2024

Out of Contract
Joel Coleman
Jay Lynch
Brad Wade

Jim McNulty
Eoghan O'Connell
Jeriel Dorsett (loan expires)
Joe Dunne
Corey O’Keeffe
Paul Downing (loan expires)
Max Clark

George Broadbent (loan expires)
Stephen Dooley
Alex Newby

Josh Andrews (loan expires)
Danny Cashman (loan expires)
Matt Done

10 players contracted, 17 either out of contract or loan expiring. I half expect us to try and sign Broadbent & Dorsett permanently, but one thing is for certain - 2022/2023 will be a fully Stockdale squad. Out of everybody in contract for next season only Keohane & Grant are survivors from the BBM era! Hopefully the rumoured increased playing budget, coupled with a more settled club and experience from this season, will see a more competitive team next season.

If we’re looking at any recruitment coming from shifting people out, let Tulloch and Nelson return to their clubs and look to move Kelly and/or Ball on. This should free up enough wages to bring in someone in midfield who will make a difference and a forward/wide player who will create. Any further additions would probably involve conversations around Sinclair and Rodney.

Would keep Seriki to allow Keohane to play in midfield, which is where I’d start him the next game alongside Diagouraga and Brierley.

For what its worth, in January I'd be looking at:

GK Richard O'Donnell - Summer 2024 Keep
GK Cieran Slicker - Summer 2023* Send back - disappeared, waste of a loan space
GK Brad Kelly - Summer 2023 Keep - back up to ROD

CB Ethan Ebanks-Landell - Summer 2024 Keep, but potentiall give the armband to ROD
RCB Sam Graham - Summer 2023 Keep, maybe try to extend
CB Jim McNulty - Summer 2023 Keep - primarily coaching role
LCB Cameron John - Summer 2024 Keep
CB Max Taylor - Summer 2024 Sell if he isn't even making the bench
RCB Ben Nelson - Summer 2023* Keep
LB Aidy White - Summer 2023 Look to offload if he will stay unfit
RWB Femi Seriki - Summer 2023* Keep, play at RB allowing JK to play midfield

SWISS Jimmy Keohane - Summer 2023 Keep, look to extend
CM Liam Kelly - Summer 2023 Potentially sell
CM James Ball - Summer 2024 Sell
CM Ethan Brierley - Summer 2024 Keep
CM Connor Malley - Short Term Contract Release
CDM Toumani Diagouraga - Summer 2023 Keep
CAM/WB Jordan Scanlon - Summer 2023 Keep - potentially extend
CAM Rayhaan Tulloch - Summer 2023* Send back - I'll pay the bus fare

WB/WG Abraham Odoh - Summer 2023 Keep - but use as a 70 min sub
CF Ian Henderson - Summer 2023 Keep - use more as an impact sub
CF Tahvon Campbell - Summer 2024 Keep
CF Devonte Rodney - Summer 2024 Keep, but play up top with Quigley
CAM/CF Tyrese Sinclair - Summer 2024 Keep
CF Scott Quigley - Summer 2023* Keep

When breaking it down like that, maybe ATP had a point about a poor squad...

Anyone know where Slicker is?

Fwiw, I'm not convinced that our current first-choice keeper is 'strong' enough.

He made an error yesterday but has been solid enough throughout the season. Keepers make mistakes, but he’s been one of our better players.

Agreed. He’s also a leader, which is vital at the back.

There are few others I’d be longing to cling on to, if I’m being honest. Problem is, a lot are under contract and demand for them elsewhere won’t be high.

I know Bentley has made us less wobbly at the back, but there’s still potential for a mistake in there and, when your midfield isn’t creating and your forwards aren’t scoring, one mistake is decisive.

I’ve seen this group of players perform to the levels of the Carlisle and Barrow games - solid performances against quality opposition, so it’s within them, but it’s nowhere consistent enough and hasn’t been under the previous manager also. For me, that suggests a refresh is needed on a scale we can likely not afford.

Bentley’s one acquisition has made a big difference, so I hope he is at least able to bring in a couple more that at least aid the cause, as he is likely not going to be able to do what is ultimately required.

I’ve just split into keep and try to move on. It’s a bit ambitious to think we’ll be able to get as much movement as required in January, but it’s imperative that Bentley gets more of his own players in.

GK Richard O'Donnell - Summer 2024 - Keep
GK Cieran Slicker - Summer 2023* - Try and move on
GK Brad Kelly - Summer 2023 - Keep

CB Ethan Ebanks-Landell - Summer 2024 - Keep

CF Tahvon Campbell - Summer 2024 - Keep
CF Devante Rodney - Summer 2024 - Keep
CAM/CF Tyrese Sinclair - Summer 2024 - Keep
CF Scott Quigley - Summer 2023* - Keep

The reasons for trying to move on vary, but special mentions for…

Nelson - I’d keep as cover but suspect he and Leicester will request a termination
Ball - a fraud of a footballer
Malley - he’s clearly not going to get game time
Odoh - the most infuriating player we’ve had. I’ve lost patience

Without copying that whole list again, the use of "fraud" isn't a term that EBJ would recognise when he's picking the team

I'm no longer defending Ball's value to the team since more recently there's been a lack of goals/assists at a time when we desperately need them, but if he's a fraud then all his previous goals, and goals resulting from his assists, and the points gained as a result should be wiped out since the use of that term clearly makes them illegitimate

Agree with most said above. Especially moving JK forward. I would prefer Nelson to Seriki at the back. Apart from his howler against Swindon he looked to be a decent player.
Just a word about White. He is still fast and probably the best crosser we have, certainly as a left-footer. Will he stay fit though? If he is I would play him wide midfield in front of John. With him and JK on the flanks you have nippy players who can carry the ball forward, putting less stress on central midfield.
I think (nearly) everyone has seen through Ball now. Are we sure about Rodney?

It's not even close. When he was providing those goals/assists his value to the team was imo indisputable, as they would be from any other player

I am amused that you think we might be able to sell any of these players, The only ones we might sell at some point will be Graham and Brierley, I suspect we would need to add money to a deal to get rid of most of the others!
January will change very little,... Malley will probably not be offered a contract and 2 or 3 loanees will go back to their parent clubs if they will take them maybe then we can get a couple more loanees and sign Quigley but that will be it. There is no money, We are now in an existential battle as far as our EFL status is concerned. We are averaging less than a point a game and cant score a goal for love nor money. This is about as bad as it gets.

May I ask, what are the rules on season long loans? Are we dependant on the club loaning us the player agreeing to take them back and if they say 'no' are we forced to keep them.

If we send Slicker and Tulloch back and let Malley go, would release wages for two potential signings. I would keep Seriki for the season and keep kelly and Ball until the summer, we cannot weaken the midfield any further. Yes I accept that Kelly is light weight in a more physical division two, compared to league one, but at the same time, he has shown at times that he has ability.

Sadly we have little scope to get rid of one of the worst squads I have seen over the years of supporting. Realistically it will just be the loans going back and the short term contracts.

GK Richard O'Donnell - Summer 2024-keep
GK Cieran Slicker - Summer 2023*-send back
GK Brad Kelly - Summer 2023-keep

CB Ethan Ebanks-Landell - Summer 2024-keep
RCB Sam Graham - Summer 2023-keep
CB Jim McNulty - Summer 2023-release to free up a playing wage
LCB Cameron John - Summer 2024-keep
CB Max Taylor - Summer 2024-has potential but release as needs must
RCB Ben Nelson - Summer 2023*-send back
LB Aidy White - Summer 2023-release as will never be fit
RWB Femi Seriki - Summer 2023*-send back

SWISS Jimmy Keohane - Summer 2023-keep until summer, so many goals come from fullback positions so needs addressing
CM Liam Kelly - Summer 2023-keep until summer then release as just no consistency
CM James Ball - Summer 2024-release as not league standard
CM Ethan Brierley - Summer 2024-keep
CM Connor Malley - Short Term Contract-release
CDM Toumani Diagouraga - Summer 2023-keep
CAM/WB Jordan Scanlon - Summer 2023-keep
CAM Rayhaan Tulloch - Summer 2023*-send back, not league standard

WB/WG Abraham Odoh - Summer 2023-release in summer, no end product and not improving
CF Ian Henderson - Summer 2023-release in the summer
CF Tahvon Campbell - Summer 2024-transfer list, not convinced he is league standard
CF Devonte Rodney - Summer 2024-transfer list, pace his only asset but lacks any effort and not league standard
CAM/CF Tyrese Sinclair - Summer 2024-squad player at best
CF Scott Quigley - Summer 2023*-try to sign

Typically there is no termination clause on long term loans. This obviously works both ways with parent clubs unable to recall and Dale unable to send a player back.

I’m not sure if the loans can be terminated if there is a mutual agreement. It really doesn’t make sense for the player or parent club to keep a player out on loan if they’re not playing games. In our case they’re all youngsters so I doubt it would impact a parent clubs budget too much.

If there is scope for mutual agreement, I wouldn’t be surprised to see all of our loan players return to their parent club!

Going back to Ball, I think he’s an absolute disgrace of a footballer and I’m looking forward excitedly to when he finally leaves the club. There was one incident in particular yesterday that summed him up when the ball was there to be won and he just half heartedly stuck his leg out and then decided he actually couldn’t be arsed going for it.

Unfortunately we’re limited with options in midfield at the moment so this waster is going to have to play until either people are fit or we get someone in in January.

I’m normally glass half full with Dale but this guy winds me up like no other player ever has. I can handle lack of talent but not effort.

There have been plenty! Though yes, he’s not been good enough over time.

Made comparisons to Steve O’Shaughnessy in the way he played when O’Shaughnessy was used in midfield due to similarities in their awareness in the middle of the park. There have been signs Ball can be a useful player, but it’s been fleeting and he doesn’t influence games anywhere near enough.

Genuine question (what else?) - but EBJ has the option of starting SAJ in midfield, or Malley, or someone else who 'qualifies' as a footballer, rather than a "fraud" or a "waster"

Why do you think EBJ keeps selecting him?

Malley has flattered to deceive and hasn’t taken any opportunities he’s been given so far. He certainly should be starting Keohane there now.

I think Bentley’s been selecting Ball because he was hoping we’d see his more of the form seen when the manager arrived. Unfortunately it looks like that was a brief upturn in displays and he’s been subbed twice in a row now.

Fair comment, and pretty much echoes my thoughts, which include the contributions Ball made to the initial upturn under EBJ

The main point here though, is that if Ball was either a "fraud" or a "waster", i think enough of EBJ's managerial nous to not entertain either of those if they applied

They don't, and imo it does no-one any good, least of all the manager or the confidence of a player who's on our books (potentially) till the summer of 2024 to put those labels out there
