Free kicks, corners, etc 11:38 - Dec 10 with 759 viewsSpaceman_P

Throw in's seem sorted.

Chair should never take corners or free kicks, ever again.

Last night I liked that short corner to RND, seemed worked out a little.

Dembele annoyed me with the free kick.... does he really think he's Roberto Carlos in that situation. Madsen should of put his footdown and the right-footed option was more likely to yield something.

What would you lot like to see?

Definitely chair needs to realise he's just not good at corners.... I'm sure the team view the board.... so please take note team.

I don't think for a second that Chair just decides that he's on corners, Spaceman. That has to be decided by whoever's in charge of set pieces.

A few weeks back, Jack Supple had us 23rd in both attacking and defending set-pieces for the entire season, so we're rank at them regardless of who's taking them.

I think our throw-ins are also terrible - long throws that aren't long - and would love to see the logic behind the decision to take them long. Also, if we're going to continue to take them long, then why isn't Cook taking them.

To be fair corners, free kicks (apart from Dembele’s direct effort) and long throw ins were fine last night. Madsen’s set pieces are consistently better than Chair’s.

I think the corners and frees delivery has slightly improved in the last few games, Ned?

It's not just about delivery, though, as we've said on here before. It's also about movement, runners, jumpers, decoys. We haven't looked as inventive or as urgent this season, it seems to me.

A free kick anywhere around the oppositions penalty box should terrify the opposition, when we do get them free kicks well I don't know but I don't get excited anymore.
When Terry Venables was our Manager our free kicks around the oppositions penalty box were good and had obviously been well rehearsed/practised.

The quality of crossing in general has stepped up massively this season. Madsen on Saturday and Saito last night were absolute peaches, but we're seeing it every game from RND and others as well. Must have been a lot of work going on with that and it's paying off.

To be fair to Chair, his set pieces have been much better this season in my opinion. Madsen also brillant in dead ball situations.

I'm guessing they are also looking at all the possible outcomes from a set piece.

So, If Chair is on the pitch but doesn't take the corner, where does he fit?
He's probably not in the box, too small
He's probably not on the halfway line to track back, too slow
So, he might just be a compromise for the team.

Cook might be able to throw the ball further, but he's probably more use in the box causing problems trying to win a header

I do feel our defending of set -pieces has improved incrementally but steadily in recent weeks, so credit Mr Bould for that. Our ‘long’ throws are at best amusing. If Dunne is not standing a couple of yards inside their box, then it is just going to be cleared with interest. I love Smithy, but it’s biologically impossible for short people to take long throws. No matter how far he arches himself backwards, he hasn’t got enough length/strength in his arms to provide the necessary trajectory. But also, as you pointed out elsewhere, if our players are just standing there, waiting for him to throw it then it is easy to defend against. You need runners, decoy runners, general off the ball movement, to create a bit of mayhem in the box and then hope the ball drops kindly for someone to have a strike at goal.

I dunno, I think the throw is mostly technique, like a good golf shot.

The throws that are hard to defend are quick with a flat trajectory, not sure that favours a taller pivot point?

And back to my other point, if Smyth is on the pitch is he better used trying to win a header, or delivering the ball for one?
-- Saying that he nearly put his headed goals total to three last night, so what do i know?

It has looked to me like Smyth can throw long as he does at some away grounds where he's got room to get a good run at it. At Loftus Road sometimes he has run along the side of the touchline then twist as he throws, or he starts crouching with his arse almost in the front row of the crowd, neither work for him so well.

Only thing that annoys me on corners is not putting in enough in-swingers; so much more dangerous than out-swingers!

Madsen was doing a pretty decent job with them last night.

And before his time here is up, Cook will finally score one of those bicycle kicks he keeps attempting
